3D Visualization with Mayavi | SciPy 2018 Tutorial | Prabhu Ramachandran

This tutorial will introduce the participants to 3D visualization using Mayavi (github.com/ent.... Mayavi is an Open Source, Python package for general purpose 3D visualization. Mayavi uses VTK (www.vtk.org) under the covers and provides a very Python-friendly API.
At the end of the tutorial users will be able to use Mayavi effectively to produce 3D visualizations and hopefully be able to represent their data in a suitable format so it may be visualized with Mayavi/VTK.

Great tool! I'm new to python, and using pycharm and mayavi examples got it installed, running and showed an interactive graphics window in less than 30 minutes. I'm new to this, never had a complicated tool install and run so well and so quickly! Nice!

Hi Prabhu: It will be nice if you start with installing Mayavi from scratch on a linux machine like Centos. It is not easy to install and make mayavi to work even following your on-line steps.

use pip it's very easy the installer searches for required packages and installs them automatically if they are missing

Thanks for your hard work on the software, I am currently using it on a project. However I have some issues. Is it just me or is there no real support forum for this software? Or is it written on a "if you cannot use it then you are not a grown up yet"-basis? I have some issues with an animation and a colorbar that breaks the animation. Enthought support page gives a 404 error and most Mayavi questions on Stackoverflow go unanswered for months and even years.

unfortunatly i feel the same that they created something very good but just dumped it in the internet. Since there is no alternative its still being used. Only matter of time someone does it better

Thanks for wonderful lecture. I have one question, after creating 3D mesh from points can we get face data to do some calculations. For example, 2 triangles are created from 4 points, then can I get which points are used to create those triangles? Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know of a tutorial regarding custom GUI utilizing mayavi? The examples on the mayavi page are too simple and do not go over how to add buttons.

I have a question, how we can use large files with mayavi without copying file to memory? Is there a way to use memory mapped files with mlab functions? Thanks,
