Disclaimer, for the 3D effect to work with any regular red+blue 3D glasses you need to have Red as the Right-eye color, swapped sides will invert the stereoscopic and won't give you the 3D effect.
Hmm, an RPG that would utilize this type of gameplay? Only RPG I can think of that even remotely feels like this game is Drakkhen on the SNES. First person over world with obstacles to avoid, third person dungeon exploration, and at night there are constellations that will randomly (jump scare) start moving in the sky with this creepy tune playing, before a weird bouncing demon thing that looks similar to the constellation that created it comes down from the sky and attacks the party. They even move like the dragon bosses of this game. Great video as always! Thank you for the entertainment. Always appreciated.
During my first year in college I was OBSESSED with playing this game and really getting into it, but even I couldn’t get past the 5th set of levels! I’m really excited to see what you have to say about it
With knowledge of the continue code, it really wasn't too bad. But I will say, it felt like it took longer than it actually did to beat. Some of the later stages are painful. Especially the last boss battle.
You weren't kidding, this was an enjoyable review!! I remember playing 3-D World Runner for a minute and thinking what you were apparently thinking: That I wanted to come back to this because it seems like a unique NES/FC game that has a whole lot more to it. Sadly doesn't seem that way after all and I'm with you, it feels like something _should_ have been done with the game on top of it, it feels like a prototype waiting for the rest of the game to be developed. Still, your review feels fair and I definitely still feel like I want to give it another go. And that manual really is sick and does a lot of heavy lifting for the whole presentation, to the point that it almost feels like the _game_ came with the _manual_ and not the other way around. Love these cute and well done illustrations, but the coolest thing to me is full-page 3D illustration on the back, combined with the cover. Dope stuff!! So yeah, good review! Also good job on the intro and outro too, loved it. It made me realize just how much Retro Oddyssey has started to feel like a "real" show on TV like GameCenter CX or something, giving me a whole new appreciation for it! (Also you got me with the "Whatever"-verdict, like I seriously fell for it, so uh... make of that what you will lol)
I love your appreciation for the art and the box and manual shots. I also really appreciate the physical materials that come with the games, and I think it affects the overall experience. And I appreciate that! I've really been trying to have a consistent level of quality across the Season 3 videos so far. And I think the new outros add a lot to it. I think they're worth the effort even if by the time I reach the end sometimes I'm about spent on editing lol
Neat look at early Square and some of its history. Covering a game like this that doesn't have a ton of depth is almost more of a challenge, and I would have been ok with the fake-out! Loved that intro so much that I'm writing down I watched this video in my diary today.
If you, sir, can talk for 29:09 minutes straight about a game which brings absolutely nothing to the table and make it look interesting, then I harbor but no doubt in my heart that you're destined for great things. I humbly salute thee.
I always felt like this game was just a 3D jumping tech demo that got turned into a full game and had no idea there were items hidden in columns, you could shoot or that you could multi-jump from them in succession. I also didn't know this was originally a FDS game either and only played the US cartridge. I think I played until World 2 or 3 without any items, got bored then turned it off. I keep forgetting too these days that most games, especially if they are on popular consoles have PDF versions of the manuals these days, are available online. But even with your wonderful and comprehensive review it's still not enough to motivate me back into trying the game again lol. Excellent review as always! 😎
I would honestly not recommend jumping back in if you've already toyed around with it before anyway lol. I will also say that the PDFs of manuals online have helped me greatly in my journey so far. Thanks for the comment!
Not one of the all-time greats on the NES, but unquestionably one of my favorite and most important games of my childhood growing up in the early 90s. My family and I played this game all the time.
Dude, your content blows... ...nearly every other youtuber video game analysis/review/retrospective channel out of the friggin' water. 😁Srsly, great stuff, never see any channel covering a game like this in such depth. Hope your subscriber count starts exploding.
Hey, I found your channel a few days ago and have been vibing with a bunch of your older vids. The algorithm must be on your side right now. What's the track you use for your intro? I like it a lot and it seems kind of familiar. Love the channel, thanks!
The artist is listed in the description! His name is "Outmind Beats" - the song is track 7 on his album "Lo-Fi Lord" As far recommendations - I can't complain. I cover a lot of really niche games that people aren't really interested in. For a few years only a handful of people watched, but things have really picked up in the last 9 months or so and it's been great. Glad you've been enjoying the videos!
I played the heck out of this game back then. I remember the later levels becoming next to impossible. Was it one of those games that was 'impossible' to beat? Because I know I tried. And the levels seemed to keep going on and on.
It has a definite ending and I show it later in the video. It's super difficult, but one of those games where once you know what you're supposed to do, even though it feels impossible, it doesn't actually take that long time-wise to reach the end. Though it is frustrating.
@@HPRshredder It is necessary to spread this idea like a virus in places where retro developers gather. And Mario himself can be disguised, for example, in a ninja outfit🥷, a Zorro mask🦹 or something else that hides his face so that even Shigeru Miyamoto does not understand who is under the mask🦸😶🌫
It's a shame home 3D was never utilised well and got killed off... 3D TVs were the best invention ever, just most of the 3D movies were a bit crap... Games is where 3D shines! Running PC games with some 3D enabling mods on a 3D TV with surround audio is just amazing, if only more people could expirince it, by now 3D would have became the default way of playing games. There were some 3D games for PS3 and x360 but frankly, neither had enough power to runn 3D well, they were all tuning in like 1/4th the possible resolution of FHD 3D TV.. (720p internal resolution divided in half to 2x 360p, instead of 2x 1080p)
Honestly, it kind of feels like a fever dream to me even now. But that's no doubt in part because of how long I was staring at it and listening to it while editing.
Genuinely like that you obviously had a hard time with this game but you stuck with it and made a super slick video about it. I love your production. Your camera and lighting setup is so good, it goes extremely well with your chill persona.
Great review! I briefly had this game but knew less than 10% of what I know now! My friend brought this cartridge to my house when the game was new, without any glasses, so I've just found out about those. Anyway, we played the game for maybe an hour, and then went back to Zelda, Metroid and company. The wow-factor of the visuals didn't last long enough to make us want to go far in the game. I'd been playing Space Harrier and Outrun in the arcades and thought it was cool that a NES game was attempting that perspective, but its lack of substance made that kind of pointless. I later got Rad Racer and I found that one a lot better because the gameplay was great. I quickly tossed the useless 3D glasses, though.
On the 8bit/16bit computer days and the nes/sms, snes/genesis days assembler was the standard, today we have some hobbist C compilers for some of these machines, but not even the best ones give you the same performance as assembler on those hardwares, The best one is the SGDK for genesis, it is almost the same level of performance, but it's never 100%, but the creation of the SGDK was what allowed so many homebrew sega genesis to come out in the last years. Being able to use python, C# or even java (Minecraft) these days is a luxury. Romero worked with computers his entire career, and at the time he was working with games, 32bit computers, C was very common on DOS machines alongside pascal/delphi, basic, etc.
I really love your videos. Your smooth, soothing voice, the cool pastel aesthetic, and the downtempo music gives it a very vaporwave aesthetic. It's chill and comforting to watch.
the game has a sequel called JJ: Tobidase Daisakusen Part II "is a sort of "dark version" of the original game; it moves at a much faster pace with increased difficulty, plus a more "sinister" art style and use of color." Also you need to figure out the continue code which assume the ending gives you.
Dude, I haven't played this game since I was 10 years old but I remembered the Green Meanies and White Willies immediately when I loaded this video up. Awesome. Also, my copy of 3D Worldrunner, purchased in the USA in 1988, came with a very basic pair of flat black 3D glasses.
Perfect pacing and editing in this video, as always. I loved every single moment and wish it was longer (even though I have no idea what you would talk about haha). Also it’s crazy how incredible they made the manual for such a basic game. And the condition of the one you got is so good; literally looks like it is brand new. I could see people collecting this game just for the manual alone. Another great video, and I absolutely loved the intro and the outro
This game is a predecessor to modern endless runner games, for mobile phones. Things like "ZellyGo Dash", and "Lara Croft: Relic Run". The slide, under objects is about the only thing missing.
I live in Tallahassee and when I first met one of my friends here I thought he looked suspiciously like you. So the FSU is sus, to say the least. Another W btw
I went to FSU twice for two different degrees. When I was there, I used to go to Lucky Goat for coffee. The baristas there told me there was a guy who would come in that looked almost exactly like me. I never managed to bump into him. Maybe it was your friend! Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it.
I think it's a good enough game, actually pretty good for being an early title. The major flaw I see is the single music track, man it grinds your ears for about 30 stages. The harder difficulty level may seem nonsense now, but it used to be at the order of the day to prolong the game as much as possible, and often offering very little extra. If you think about it, even Mario 1 has a second quest. The average Nintendo kid would get a couple of games a year, so we were usually happy with the chance to try a harder setting. I'm curious why you chose this overall run-of-the-mill game, I guess it's because Square was involved?
To answer your last question: when I made my initial list of games to play, I was basing it first upon what seemed to be "must-play" games, like, your Marios, your Mega Mans, your Castlevanias; and secondly on Japan-exclusive games that westerners may have missed out on. After that, I also added games that seemed to do something different or interesting, or seemed like they could be a potential hidden gem. This game falls into that last category. I made my to-play list back in 2018 and I've kept it largely unaltered since then. Moving forward though, I'll probably have to shrink my list a bit so I can get to the game I really want to play a bit quicker. If it didn't take me so long, I'd probably want to do a video for everything.
@@HPRshredder Thanks, those are some good criteria. It's interesting to know about unbiased impressions of another generation when it comes to these games. Nowadays I prefer going through more non-canonical 3rd party developers and their less traditional approach. Lots of jankiness but you'll dig out some great stuff eventually. Though you're right, the library is so large, thoroughly covering all/most of it in detail takes long. But hey, you're young and kicking. Thanks for the video!
Hey @HPRshredder, I just wanted to clarify something about a powerup. if you catch the invincibility atom in the air (jumping right after it appears) it will last for much longer. I discovered this on total accident, but it's worked every time since. I haven't found any sites that mention this, so I may be one of the few that's discovered it. just thought I'd share!
I am honestly surprised there was never a game I can think of on the NES that had the 3D plane of 3D Worldrunner but played more like an rpg. Once heard that the original Final Fantasy was made to almost be the anti-Dragon Quest in how things worked. I'd be very interested to see an 8-Bit RPG throwback use the 3D effects of this game for at least in the overworld to stand out.
You should make a retro odyssey episode about the first Mother game from the NES (or Earthbound Beginnings). It's a very ostracized game inside the Earthbound community but it's one i always had a soft spot for, so i've bee wondering what would be ur opinion on it. for your consideration i guess :p
That one has been on my list since the beginning. Since I’m playing games in order of release date though, there are a good number of titles still in line before it. But Mother 1 is one of the projects I anticipate working on the most.
Thank you so much, man! I was wondering if the thumbnail worked since the CTR was a little lower on this one, but it could just be the game. I might make some changes to the contrast/saturation, but I'm just letting it ride for now. Listening to surf zone rn btw 🌊🏄🤙
Great rundown as usual. I love a game that rewards you for smacking into things. Keep putting yourself into games, that's hilarious! Awesome job, very detailed!
hey man! Miss your videos I really hope some new stuff comes out soon! Hey I have a great idea for one of these episodes? What about Hitler No Fukkatsu (Bionic Commando) I think you would do an amazing job with that game! Hope to see ya soon!
Bionic Commando is already on the list! I'm excited to play it. Also, if you look on my community tab, there is a link to an unlisted update video posted late last month if you're interested. Covers what's been going on and when to expect the Rygar video. Thanks for checking in!
I wish I had known about the hold A and press Start trick. Growing up I never got past the 5 level. I thought it was a really fun and cool game but there's a lot of unnecessary crap as you explained. Great video and good work!
"Skywaterfall watering hamburger buns." I kinda thought it looked like an aquarium with the little water filter thingy, but I like your description better.
I would love to see you go for Chrysalis, Faxanadu or Solomons key. All of them to me are sort of dark horse underrated titles that have a lot of good in them.
29 great minutes wirh much discussion on the music? The music for this game sums it up so well. It starts and you think, "alright, this is ginna be good" but after just a little bit you realize it doesn't go anywhere and it needs more variety. It feels like it could be great, but just ends up meh. In the Speedrun they do a trick in world 3 to trick the game to kill the music. 😂
I make a joke about the music at 22:53 lol. It was pretty grating, and I just turned the volume pretty low after a while. It still got stuck in my head though.
