Hi there. I can confirm this worked on my New 3DS XL system. I had the message "an error occured, please hold on the power button and contact nintendo if it occurs again". Then full black screen and no boot. I reflowed the chip as you mentionned; but I also had to clean the top right corner yellow ribbon (itself, not the connector) that can be seen at 5:08 on your video. Somehow, some oxydation/black stuff appeared on it. I removed it with WD40 and a teeth brush, gently moving over it's surface until the oxydation was removed. During the repair process, I also removed the mainboard to check it's back side, but when putting it back in, some of the tiny plastic holder broke (I think it was allready broken before as the console fell many times and I had trouble removing this particular ribbon). I used hot glue to keep the ribbon in place, and by some kind of luck the console seems to behave as normal, except that the home menu doesn't trigger anymore. All in all thank you as your video spare me to buy another console. Special Hot resistent tape around it made the trick so as to avoid burning other components when reflowing the chip with the air station. Take your time and good luck everyone. D.N
Thank you for this video. I recently purchased a New 3DS XL and plan to completely refurbish it (new casings, buttons, etc) and get all of the old Pokemon, Zelda, etc games for it before the eshop closes down permanently in March. This video has shown me that it's not quite as complicated "under the hood" as I had thought!
@@Raven-vo6dl tech james just uploaded a fix for that its different from this problem.. Mine has this problem I'll try this my self.. But yours is called black screen of death look up james tech... Good luck 👍
Thank you for putting a summary at the start of the video, its annoying to watch through almost all of a video and find out it doesnt actually have anything to do with my problem.
Your videos are astounding. I really love this stuff, it's really interesting to see, and you're so smart for finding all these ways to fix, hack, or do whatever with the 3DS family. Keep it up! :)
Quick question, my 3ds has completely dead “sort of” i used to the same think in the video until I had gotten a new charger and it worked then all of a sudden it broke again and for a day or two it did the blinking light thing until it just fully died no blinking lights or anything. I am so sad because worked an extra job just to try and get one and now it’s not working. What do i do?
Hi Sthetix. My new 3ds xl does the same thing as yours in the video. The fuses all work - I bought a replacement daughter board because I'm not good at soldering and it arrived completely broken. You mention to a lot of other people that the flex cable may be broken - which cable is the flex cable? Thanks for the video
@@sthetixofficial ok. There's no popping noise, it's just doing the red light issue like yours in the video. Guess I'll need to order another daughter board and hope for better luck
My New 3DS XL just goes blue for half a second and turns back off, meanwhile the charger light turns off after about 5 seconds thinking the battery is full.
Can I apply this solution to my console? My problem started after putting the battery in backwards (positive pole with the negative). I had the console disassembled because I was trying to fix another problem and accidentally put the battery in the wrong polarity and then it wouldn't turn on. I have already tested the two fuses that you mention in the video (I don't know if there are more than two) and they both have continuity. The console charges the battery, because when I connect it, the charging indicator LED turns on. When I disconnect the charger, the charging LED stays on until I remove the battery. When I try to turn on the console, it doesn't give any sign of life, not even the red LED that you mention in the video. I would like to know if there is another way to approach the problem or if the method you mention in the video would work in my case because I don't want to mess it up even more. I have also tried cleaning the connectors.

If you're using a CFW 3ds (which i do) and when turning on the 3ds the blue LED turns but only for a coupe second, try removing your SD card and then putting it on the 3ds again. It works for me
Angga Mahaputra OH MY GOD THANK YOU. The second I put it back in and turned it on, the splash screen came on. I guess it wasn’t reading it properly, therefore no payload therefore nothing. THANK YOU.
I removed sd card and battery but there is no light at all. It does charge, but it doesn’t boot, there’s no blue light. I couldn’t really turn off my 3DS after homebrewing it(but it was the first time I used it in a year). Idk why it doesn’t work please can you help me. It’s been a consistent problem but I usually leave it for a day and hold the power button for 5mins. When it was working it wouldn’t really turn off either, so I had to use the rosalina menu.
Hey i dropped my new 3ds xl and the back screen broke but deosnt look like it turns on, but the blue led turns on. Pls tell me a sulotion. I want to play ultra sun.
@@sthetixofficial pls help so when i turn on my new 3ds xl the led light turns on and the wireless light also turns on it even makes the sounds it makes when you turn it on but both the bottom screen and top screen are black pls help i just got Pokemon silver for my 3ds and im not ready to give it up yet
I have a problem where the blue light will turn on but the screen won't turn on. After I try to turn it off luma3ds give me an error saying kernal panic. Do you have a solution to this? I was trying to change the region back to default with CFW.
3:40 that ribbon cable is the reason why my doesn’t wanna turn on the thing that holds the cables down snapped off Any help would be highly recommend! 🙏 now i just wanna get it turn on to do a system transfer :(
My Nintendo charging port broke so I can’t charge it from the port so i use the cradle but it doesn’t charge I get a new charger but it still don’t charge plz somebody text me a solution
It’s been a year, but the same thing is happening to me and I’m pretty sure the charging port got disconnected from the motherboard internally. You can either open it up carefully and try to fix the problem yourself, or just send it to Nintendo

Hey I have a question. I replaced the abxy board recently but now it's not charging. The orange light turns on when plugged in but the battery charge doesn't go up. It didn't do this before i had to replace the board. Did I get a faulty board? Wanna also add I've checked mostly everything else (battery, fuses, charger, etc)
Try testing the full charged battery. Nominal is 3.7V and mine was at 2.3V max. It was showing no signs of life exept for the charging light. Working fine with a new battery.
lol u dont need to do this just knock gently on the back case where the button board would be a few times and it works again, but this is still an amazing video!
I have same issue i follow same steps but my issue is the same both resisters are ok but i find out with thermal camera that the chip name with CKP near to the charging connector of is getting hot and its only hot when i connect battery. Please guide
Hi, thanks for the video. I had a similar issue with the Y button so that I cleaned up the contact. After pluging back the daughter board and making sure connecting ribbons was well seated, I could not turn on the 3DS... I tested both power fuses and they are OK. I do not have the blue LED on either but orange LED for charging is OK. Owning a second 3DS, I swapped daughter boards to figure out the problem. Same issue for both 3DS. I swapped daughter boards back and now I can't turn them both on... I guess there is a security mode or whatever... Anything to test???
Hi! It's not powering on at all (no blue light). It's not the button board but the motherboard (I'm comparing two consoles side by side and I've switched button boards and the same result). Can you tell me if there is a part of the motherboard I should try cleaning/messing with to fix it? Many thanks!
I had this exact problem. But uhm... I just took my sd out,put it back in, and spammed the power button , and after a few billion times,I noticed it somehow turned on 🎉
Can you please make a video about how to install and work pkhex I've tried so much and failed so much the videos on it are unclear or old , I really need help and you are the only RU-vidr I count on for ds hacks and stuff
Hi, congratulations for your nice video. Can you help me understand what problem my New Nintendo 2ds xl has, please? When I press the on button the blue LED lights up the 2 screens remain black and after 4 or 5 seconds I hear a noise (tac) and the blue LED turns off. What can I check / change? Many Thanks
Mines completely dead no sign of power, did battery swap and a working known daughter board as well, and nothing, also swaped the motherboard off a new working 3ds xl and nothing still dead
great video as always. mind if you have any idea how to fix this, "when turn on the console, i got a message, " an error occurred: failed to mount sd", Im running CFW on 11.6, BOOT9strap and LUMA3ds on v.9.0 - TIA
Do you think this could help my X button start working properly again? For some reason it started only working if I push it really hard, which I don't want to do because I feel like it would damage the system eventually.
@@sthetixofficial I cleaned it but it didn't have anything on it, and it still isn't working properly. I also haven't used the system that much from 2017 when I got it to 2021 when it started having problems, and it's kind of just sat since 2021 because of the problem.
This is a good video.I have the same problem but I don't know how can I repair it.I can't melt the chip like you did.I want to play with my 3ds but I can't.I'm so sad
So i have a bit of a problem: my o3ds xl only works while being plugged in. When i plug it in it says it is at full battery, so it recognizes that the battery is there but completely disregards it. I bought a new battery with the same result. Im not sure if it’s a fuse problem or something else. thanks
My 3ds, charges etc but when i hit power button - it makes a crack, type noise and nothing else, no screen action.. I've tried cleaning contacts and made sure bat is charged...suggestions?
I had a problem where my 3ds turned on but both screens didn't display anything I took off the back and one of the cables was disconnected I plugged it back in and turned it on and it worked it is now living a happy life with its CFW and a nearly broken R button
What is that chip for? And why do you reflow it? What is reflow anyways? Why does reflow solve the problem? Is this solution permanent or its just a temporary fix?
+desmond lau i think that chip is responsible for power management. Reflow is making the solder good again. It will be permanent solution if the chip is still ok. But if the chip is bad then reflowing is just temporary. Nothing to loose.
Hello! Something similar happens to me. I connected an aux jack cable from the new 3ds to a usb of my mac air. He burned something and from that moment stopped igniting. When the electricity is switched on, the orange light comes on. It is no longer possible to turn it on. Do you think this video is the solution or could it be something else? Thank you!
+Ilker Uslucan delete the key from 3ds/data/freeshop/keys and download the key manually from 3ds.titlekeys.gq/downloadenc and put the key to the folder
I have the same problem but to me is not working whether I charge or not, I started to have this just when I removed my battery from my 3DS to replace a new battery
When I turn it on it has the blue light for a few seconds, makes a weird noise and than turns off.If I spam the power button before it does the same thing it shows a sleep mode thing and you need to press the home button to get to the menu. When you press the home button,it goes to to home menu logo, than turns off. What happened?
My 3DS XL charges so well, but when you turn it on, it turns on for 5 seconds it turns off with a click from the speakers. Please help me what it means, I think my brother broke it.
I watched several videos on this problem. It could be that your speaker cable is broken. I have no chance to try it myself. But you can try use a headphone instead. It would skip the speaker check when starting the console and you would be able to get in. When I came to this conclusion. I reassemble my new 3ds but the blue led couldn't even turn on.
Mine's blue light turns on but not the console. Any suggestions on how to fix it? (Without paying for a repair or opening it) all i wanted to do was replay my old pokemon save file
you only need to change the sd card you use if you use a converter using sd card just change the card reader the put it back then boom done but still thanks for this good man who upload this video @sthetix
my 3ds also won't turn on but the LED is BLUE instead of red. the blue led comes on slowly as i press the power button then fades and the console stays off. any suggestions? thank you in advanced.
my blue LED is on but I have no image, it is black and it was after I used the "uninstal hax new retail" script if I use flashcard with ntrboot to recover it? and how will I know if it is in rest mode if not the image with the magnet
I can not, will it be bad positioning of the magnet? because the files in SD are correct and already tried in several places, the place of the new 3ds to get the magnet is in the B but it continues with black screen, I'm using flashcard with ntrboot I did the procedure with nintendo ds lite
I tried doing another one of your hacking videos on the 2ds to get the cfw thing, but when I finished the b9 thing, it did not go to the luma screen and won't turn on, when I press the power button, the led turns blue but led turns off again, please help!
I got a new battery to replace an old one, but the new battery doesn’t even register in the 3ds. It behaves as if it doesn’t have a battery in it. Mine is the first small 3ds. Am I doing something wrong?
My 3ds xl have the same symptons. I almost bought a new mother board. but now, theres more things to try before it. If i come to need help, can u help me?
Can you explain why it happens? I have a new 3ds xl and it don't turn on , it just charges for 5 seconds, i have this problem because i tried to repair the joystick also i think that problem is: I put the battery upside down or the static of my hands ? Please explain me , thanks so much
Hi my 3ds got wet I put it in a bad of rice and it turned out 4 a while but the ribbons tore off. Is it possible to save my data and have my 3ds to work? It still holds a charge but when I try to turn on it turns off as soon as I try
I really need an answer (i know this video was old, but i had a problem), i had the same New Nintendo 3DS XL just like in this video for about 5 years, today i tried to look inside my unit (only where the battery was) and took out the battery only to look at it. Because around June 2019 and two days ago, my 3ds got pop sound and when i turn it on the unit start to red light, meaning the battery was out of power, when i turn on again many minutes later without charge it, it become blue with 2,3, or 4 bar left, my 3ds also got that pop sound when i tried to put my system to sleep mode sometimes, i had a feeling i need to check the motherboard, but i'm not a professional to fix my 3ds. After i look at the battery and put it again, my 3ds won't turn on, like dead, after all i already charge this about many hours ago before i comment this, when i try to charge it, the orange light won't turn on either. So here my question: 1. Is this maybe the battery issue or something wrong inside the unit? 2. Am i doing wrong? Open my unit only to look and clean the unit where the stylus, sd card, and battery in there with tissue (btw i didn't remove the sd card, only battery and i only clean my stylus holder), but is this wrong? 3. Is the non-official nintendo ac adapter affect the motherboard issue? Because idk if this affect it (Anyways, i'm sorry if this was long, i can't explain this in small detail, also are you Indonesian? I saw from this comment and i'm also Indonesian too (is ok to reply with english too))
pop sound means.. there is a damage in the flex ribbon cable.. either the speaker flex ribbon cable or the lcd.. u need to disassemble it and observe the ribbons
sthetix what about the thing you used to test the fuses? And if I needed to replace the fuses what would I need to look for? Thank you for answering so promptly!
my nintendo 3ds xl isn't working the screen stays black and when I charge it It doesn't show the glowing color Thing And doesn't turn on. though I dropped my nintendo Few times. I really want to fix it I really want to play super smash
Same. I dropped mine since its sloppy and I don't have a case. It's either the display or the battery that's broken. If you heard a pop like I did, it's most likely that the internal display or fuse broke.
I have a hacked 3ds with Luma 3ds installed after i updazted to Luma9.0 it turns on for a few seconds and then off pls help i formatted my sd card and this doesnt help either
+Retro Dario Gaming u need to format it as fat32. Download this link.sthetix.info/starterpack. Delete everything on your sdcard, except the nintendo 3ds folder. Then replace everyhing with the one from this archive, then try again
