I have an old Nokia Flip phone and receive a text message from T-Mobile that my phone won't work after July 1 - 3G shutdown. Called T-Mobile support (611) about the shutdown. Got call back from "T-Mobile Expert" that my phone could function over 2G network. He told me not to worry and don't need to do anything. I am 72 years old and don't understand this but I would be very happy to keep my basic flip phone.

Very informative. All my devices are able to work with 4G. What I have found with 3G reception it is usually a lot better than with 4G. This has to do with the frequency bands. In Canada the 3G shutdown will not be as fast in the US. In Canada the carriers are said to be maintaining 3G service till the end of 2025.

Many thousands of 4G phone have become dysfunctional because of ATT 3G shutdown that was improperly provisioned. I have a LG Phoenix K10 smart phone that was 3G, LTE, and 4G enabled when I bought it. It is now dysfunctional. That should not have happened!. I have filled a complaint with the FCC

A video on available flip phones with hot spots and 4g would be nice. The flip phone video you described had one phone that was not a flip phone and another that was 3g.

It's affecting more than just 3G only devices I think. I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S9+ currently and it mainly uses 5G/4G/LTE network, and my 5 4G/LTE data is still working fine on it, but my GSMA sim card is no longer working as far as my phone number, phone calls, & voice-mail. All 3 of those things quit working for me today. Even though my phone is 5G/4G/LTE capable the sim card just isn't going to work on this network so I have no choice but to either change sim cards or go get a new carrier service, which I am going to have to do the latter because my service provider today was absolutely useless when I contacted them. The CS person I spoke with wasn't even aware that this took place, and took me an hour to even reach someone.

Was your phone "unlocked"? seems that is the trend with the ones that are 4G LTE capable and no longer getting service. Forcing us to be in a contract if we want our phones to work.
@Xxlibra1018xX
@Xxlibra1018xX 2 года назад
@@wideawake333 yep, I had it unlocked about a year ago to get onto a prepaid service instead of a plan. I ended up going and getting a new phone and new sim card on a different prepaid plan from a different carrier and it seems to be doing fine. I'm not going back to mobile plans with contracts, they can try all they want. My only gripe now is I found out the hard way that all of the newer Android phones are going away from having microSD card slots, which is just more frustration of the way they're taking things. They just want to be able to sell you a higher capacity phone for considerably more than it cost them to make said extra storage capacity now and leave you with no other option. Sigh.

@@Xxlibra1018xX that's what I was on, prepaid. It was a flat $45 a month, refer a friend and save, income opportunity type set up. I left the iPhone behind and got my first android. That company eventually got absorbed by TMobile. But I loved the freedom of unlocked phones and ability to change memory cards. From what I can see this 3G shutdown didn't even affect a lot of the older phones it had more to do whether you purchased your phone from them or not. If you didn't, if you had an unlocked phone they don't support it anymore. Just one more thing for big industry to be able to control. Yet another piece of our life we "had" control over that they now do. If the phones didn't have such great handy cameras on them and I didn't need it for work, I wouldn't even own one out of principal!

I think your video was great, I am just disappointed that 3G has to go away when most of America will not see 5G for many years...if at all.

I am using a 3G vehicle tracker through Speed Talk. (Theft protection) The sim card says it covers 2g 3g 4g & 5g. I am thinking that I am going to have to replace the tracker. If that is the case, will I be able to just transfer the SIM card to the new tracker and just keep on going?

T-mobile will support 3g for current customers until June, no new customers or devices running 3G will be allowed on the network. 2G will be supported probably until 2023 for current customers too. Most 3g devices & phones have a setting to run on 2G. 2G is fine for calls, text, light websites, & even streaming music, but you won't be watching video or steaming games . Those older phones will still work on a WiFi connection without a carrier or SIM card.

My phone is a 4G and it is the only Samsung 8S+ models that does not work with the 3G drop and as far as I am concerned they are forcing those that had "unlocked" phones to get in a contract.
@TshakaArmstrong
@TshakaArmstrong 2 года назад
No one wants to hear this, and I understand that, but you can buy another, newer 4g VoLTE enabled unlocked phone that is compatible the network you want to be on. TCL, Motorola, OnePlus, and Samsung all make some really good, affordable handsets. Even some with 5g, so they're future proof.

@@TshakaArmstrong AT&T, samsung 8S+, SM-G995U1 The * down at the bottom of this list of phones on the acceptable one says indicates device may require a software update to enable HD voice Wi-Fi calling video call advanced messaging or 5G. I have tried the Tech chat on AT&T they said just to go get a new SIM card at the store. However when I go to the store they say a new sim wont work and say I need a new phone. My phone is not that old, it is paid for, and I shouldn't have to be forced into a three year contract On their free offers, because they will only rebate you the money on a new phone over 3 years so you're tied to them. And its Based on the fact that you would need to upgrade to a $75 a month minimum plan. I'm on a family plan and don't need that.

Great, I live in the country which just got 4G not that long ago...but most of the area is still not covered by it. So 5G, in the country...well, that isn't even on the horizon or Verizon either. Also with Covid, the cell companies are way way behind. I am not joking, I guess I will have to give up having one since it will be unusable most of the time. If I didn't have a cell signal booster in my home, I would have zero bars for signal.

If your older phone is 3G you'll have to upgrade. 4G LTE is fine. It isn't going anywhere for a while.

My galaxy s9+ is 5G/4G/LTE but I'm on a weird pay-as-you-go carrier and the sim card is a GSMA one and even though it's still even currently running on 4G/LTE where I'm at, and my data works fine, my phone number, incoming/outgoing phone calls, & voice-mail all completely disconnected today. So yeah, it's affecting more things than just 3G data using phones

You can't, the 1st Gen 3G Kindles will be bricked in terms of connecting to the Kindle Platform. Download all your purchases before 3G goes down, then buy a new Kindle for new purchases.

@James_Knott

3G in cars in 2019??? Any company that sold obsolete gear should be required to up date it. 4G was rolled out around 2011, so anything sold in the past decade should support it. Anything older than a decade is likely obsolete in itself and should be updated. Cell generations are about 10 years and the devices tend to be usable for 2 generations.
