Serious rappers never got respect unless they wrote their own material. That was center of being known as an Emcee. Busy Bee Starski used to borrow and bite rhymes. But when Kool Moe Dee murdered him at Harlem World in 1981 it changed the game. Everyone was expected to write their own stuff. Rakim was a revolutionary Emcee...his style changed hip hop for ever. It would have been preposterous to suggest that he use someone elses rap. There were some exceptions though: Bizmarkie used to spit stuff written by Big Daddy Kane. Today, it is different. Puffy had all kinds of "ghost writers". But, back then you didn't get respect from the hip hop community if people knew you were reciting some elses rhymes.

I didn't know they were white until I saw their video on BET videos,plain and simple. Mainly because I'd taped the song off the radio and liked it----I'd never even heard of them, and just like the song.
