Water Masses, like Air masses are large bodies of water with comparable and consistent density. They are best identified by their T-S diagrams,
Water Masses for at 6 major source regions and are responsible for deep water and thermohaline circulations.

Sir I always respect knowledge and my mean to say that you are wrong was just to mention you that water mass is much like air mass and temperature and salinity uniformity is seen horizontally as in air mass.if horizontally temperature is not uniform then density will be variant similarly salinity variations also cause density variation. Therefore water mass can’t maintain its identity. Shabbir sir I apologise if my language might have hurt you.i also realised later that language was harsh. But sir my only objective was to attract you for reconsideration of concept. In open ocean in lower part both temp and salinity determine density of water and water near bottom is almost of uniform temp even from equator to poles in the entire zone of water.

Sir this lesson was extremely helpful. Can you please do a lesson on the impact of water masses from a general studies perspective as well? Thank you.

Sir do water mass have any relationship with marine liveforms
@Aju.Adhrit
@Aju.Adhrit 4 года назад
Yes, it supply various minerals and micro nutrients(bcz it pass through the underwater volcanic eruption zone like mid-oceanic ridges, hotspot volcano etc.) in the areas of upwelling in tropic&temperate region, lead to tremendous growth of phytoplankton( which base of marine life), example:- peru-chile coast etc.

@@Aju.Adhrit i mean how marine ecosystem changes ?
@Aju.Adhrit
@Aju.Adhrit 4 года назад
@@MrGaurav124 , if any changes occur in current of lower section of ocean , it directly affect the major section of food supply to phytoplankton & their formation , we know that the phytoplankton are building block of marine ecosystem(producer in food chain of marine ecosystem) and one another thing these currents control the temperature of ocean, if they weak or changes started , the temperature of ocean( Even entire globe) affect which lead to problem in development & growth of coral polyps and even a no. of issues arrived in marine ecosystem, bcz the phytoplankton , coral they are base of marine ecosystem ,So how it cannot affect the marine life form, it's common to understand. And one thing the adverse effect of temperature not only on these two even it affect various life form of ocean for example blue whale sustain in cold water or mild , if changes start in temperature this mammal easily threaten which happen in present. So there are a number of example which easily understood, how these currents(water mass) play important role in marine ecosystem.

No sir you are wrong here A Water mass has uniformity in terms of temperature and salinity.if uniformity is not there then particular volume of water can’t maintain its identity.it would mix up and its identity will be diluted. So plz reconsider it.

Dear virendra kadian, I am glad u are watching the videos. Water masses are a tricky concept. There is difference between water type and water mass. While water type does have homogenous temp and salinity, theoritically, it is a point on T-S diagrams. When the T-S diagrams are reduce to lines and the water is reduce to a 2 dimensional plane, without thickness and volume, then we may say, water mass has uniform temp and salinity. However, under exceptional cases such as in deep basins water masses may have uniform temp and salinity properties. In fact, water masses are sometimes considered to be hypothetical because in reality water does mix up, even if slowly. So it depends on to what depth u want to get into in a concept. Some suggestions. 1. Try being kind. ‘u are wrong’ are very strong words. It’s best to avoid such phrases. It’s good to be graceful. 2. It is also nice to be patient and to read up without assuming our knowledge is final. While i am sure u are learning Your questions and interjections do help me learn. God bless u.
