The eagerly anticipated third edition of the Monolith Festival 2024 commenced amidst the enchanting surroundings of the Khasi Heritage Village in Mawphlang. Organized by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), the festival is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the vibrant tapestry of Khasi culture.
During the opening ceremony, Aston-Pyniaid Sing Syiem, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of KHADC, expressed his enthusiasm for the festival's revival after an eight-year hiatus. The first edition took place in 2013, followed by the second in 2016. The current three-day affair is dedicated to commemorating 54 Chieftainships, adding a significant cultural dimension to the event.
Alan West, the Chief Curator of the Monolith Festival, shared insights into the festival's significance and cultural impact during an interview. He emphasized the importance of this event in preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Khasi community.
The inaugural ceremony attracted a distinguished lineup of dignitaries, including Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Executive Members of the KHADC, Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), and Chiefs from various Himas and headmen also attended the event, underscoring the festival's significance.
The Monolith Festival serves as a platform for cultural exchange, fostering a sense of community and pride among the Khasi people. The event promises an immersive experience for attendees, offering a glimpse into the diverse traditions, art forms, and rituals that define the rich cultural heritage of Meghalaya.
