I just bought a 97 limited 4Runner for $1400 with 227,000 miles. I’m not to handy but I am a high school teacher. So I took the car to the automotive class and let the classes work on my suspension. I bought spc UCA, OME upper and lower ball joints, OME 890/881 coils springs, bilstein 5100s and pads/rotors. Cv axles, Sway bar and much more. Oh also a rear view camera. All I had to do was buy parts and donate to the department.

I’m getting a rear view camera and new dash as well

That's awesome! what a killer deal and a great idea to have the automotive class work on it as a project. sounds like a win-win deal for sure! OME has some good stuff. I researched their parts as well before pulling the trigger on the suspension setup. How are you doing the rearview camera? using an aftermarket double din radio?

Did you replace the lower ball joints? 3rd gen 4runners are notorious known for having problems with the front end.

Nope, but I probably should have.

I really like the Icon setup, Unfortunately the engine is having some issues so the 4Runner has been parked for the last year and a half.

what’s your true and honest opinion from stock suspension to icons? The reason why im asking is cause I have OME and it’s only good on big bumps which it kinda absorbs well but not on tiny bumps, it would almost rattle the whole truck and it’s kinda annoying. I’m looking to ump up my suspension if I can find a good set up. -Like does it dampen like stock but doesn’t sway like stock?

Great question! night and day change from stock suspension. I have no experience with the OME stuff, but did look into it before making the decision on icons. TBH I wanted Kings, but it was going to be a 6+ mo wait to get them, so Icon was my next choice. The Icons are plush and super smooth, but get a little bouncy on whoops. That's my fault tho> my front coilovers do not have the CDCV but the back shocks do. I would suggest getting CDCV for both front and rear so you can fine turn dial in the valving for what you are wanting to do. it's a bit more expensive, but worth it for sure. I didn't put the front sway bar back on, so it does have some lean when turning on the road, but no shimmy or vibrations. makes for a better experience in the dirt that way. I left the back sway bar on tho for stability. hope that helps!

@@Wofford.Offroad thank that definitely helps. I know Icons and Kings are good i just dont know much when it comes to valving. I guess I just wanted to find justification if it’s worth it to upgrade lol

@Wofford.Offroad Год назад
happy to help give some insight. The valving on the front coilovers is great without the CDCV, but I wish I had it just for the ability to fine tune based on the expected terrain that day (if I need them to be softer or stiffer)

Did you need to make any adjustments for the front half shaft angles? I have heard that more than 3 inches creates too extreme of an angle
@Wofford.Offroad
@Wofford.Offroad 2 года назад
it's only a 2wd, so no front driveshafts. however, we did over-extend the angle on the steering rack and leaked fluid out during installation.

The 1” rear icon coils gave over 4” of lift???
@Wofford.Offroad
@Wofford.Offroad 2 года назад
yeah, when I bought them they were labeled as 1" coils. maybe that meant the coils themselves were 1" taller than the stock ones. I don't know. they were a bit harder to get in than the stock ones were to get out. overall though the back sits about 4" higher than the original stock ones (which had 200k+ miles on them and could have been sagging quite a bit lower than stock ride height too when new). just my experience with this install.

Like the vid but lifting a 2wd car is a waste of money. What rocks are you going to crawl?
@Wofford.Offroad
@Wofford.Offroad 2 года назад
I understand where you're coming from. My goal isn't rock climbing though (as fun as that is), it's to have a comfy & plush ride while off-roading. whether that be in the desert or up in the mountains on fire roads, I'm building it to have a smooth and comfortable ride for my family to enjoy exploring in.

Absolutely not you you put some lockers on a 2wd. And you can do SAS even cheaper. It’ll be a bad ass rig

What is the point of throwing all this money into a 2wd runner lol I mean you obviously already had goals to buy and build, why not just pay for a 4x4 lol to each their own I guess
@Wofford.Offroad
@Wofford.Offroad Год назад
great question. I don't need a 4x4 for what I plan on doing with it right now, and if I do end up needing 4wd then I'll probably just get another 3rd gen (Limited edition 4x4) and swap parts over. This 4Runner kind of fell into my lap, rather than purposefully finding and buying a 2wd.
