3rd Recon Sqdn 14th Armored Cav Reflagged 3/11th ACR 

On the Graf 1982 picture: Walker and the guy on the left were tankers. Walker was a loader on an M60A3. That's what the 3/11th had at that point. The mystery soldier, I remember too. Can't give you a name, either, Deitz. I supposed you already tried to enlarge it. I can't get enough detail. Quinata was a Staff Sergeant. Rocker on that cap. He was my scout section sergeant, first platoon, K Troop. He was from the Phillipines and had done a lot of jungle and some spec ops training. Good leader and teacher. LTC Cherie, retired with one star ? was squadron commander. Col Franks was regimental commander out of Fulda. He retired with 2 or 3 stars. Interesting story of how he and Cherie, as more than contemporaries, ended up together after being wounded similarly in VietNam. At that time, we railheaded to Graf, usually. In '84, they actually brought us back on the autobahn. Destroyed some gawdawful amount of marks worth of those little reflectors. Border tour every three months. Random alerts complete with calls to your house. A REFORGER exercise in 84?.Baader-Meinhof leftovers lurking in the area. Later found to be based right across the border in the DDR. Killed a couple of low ranking officers with compression cap bombs in their cars, in Frankfurt and nearby. You did a complete walk around of your own car every time you wanted to get into it: inside, under, anything disturbed, engine compartment, open door in front of your body....daily routines. Got them all when the border came down, within 6 months. I was there with a very unique set of leaders: A Troop commander who graduated 2nd in his class at West Point, spoke fluent German and led us everywhere we went. An XO that was his clone. A 20 yr decorated First Sergeant, and 2 Platoon Sergeants that had served in Vietnam. We usually did well at gunnery and other exercises. 1st Sergeant Brewer, he went to Korea in '84. CPT Peter Albert Henry retired as a one star. True leader. And, when we were off, Paris was 8 hrs away, Austria was 4 hours south, Frankfurt was an hour, concerts, museums, motocross, castles, Rhine River cruises. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Yes, honey, I know. I talk too much and not everybody gives a damn but....but.....

SP4 Deitz: SUIVEZ MOI should be your tag line. A great job of bringing back a lot of memories of my first active duty in the US Army, after Ranger and Armor Officer basic, it was my assignment to 3d Platoon, K Troop, 3/14th ACR, Bad Hersfeld, FRG. Had a great 3 year tour - served with tremendous fellow officers and top quality NCO's. The EM were always in the game. I recognize photos of troopers I've marched in boots alongside - Lt Taylor was one of the M Troop Platoon Leaders while I followed BB Bell (later 4 star) as M Troop XO. Remember the "Stolen Tank Flap", which challenged the Troop Commander and one of the LT's? Lot's of good lessons learned which provided guidance for 28 years of service to our country. Saddle UP !

Gosh that makes me nostalgic. My father worked as a private contractor for the US Army in Bad Hersfeld at the McPheeters barracks from the end of the 1970s until it was dissolved. I can still remember how it was when the Army came through the village to the Friedewald Training Area. As a child it was always an adventure.

Stationed there 70-71 as a medic in headquarters company. Spent most of my duty time at the squadron dispensary, aid station down the hill. Served under two doctor captains, Drew and Hofeldt. There was a big demonstration by black troopers in 71, fire bombed the colonel's office. I was on the border at OP Oscar for that excitement.

I served in 3rd Squadron Bad Hersfeld July 1965-June 1966 as platoon leader and exec officer ( briefly) before rotating to Ft Lewis,Wa…Col Braunstein was our commander… I plan to attend reunion Fulda September’24

In Fulda with the 14th, replaced with the 11th ACR summer of 1970. Was with the 709th MP Bn.,

To this day I regret not having exchanged a few dollars and ordering a real American T-bone steak from the NCO club. Why please was the 14th ACR turned into the 11th ACR if the personnel remained the same?
