Today we’re going to look at 4 ½ diode tricks that you can use in your designs.
The diode is a fundamental component you have to understand if you want to grow your electronics prowess.
Diodes are generally the first non-linear component one learns about.
Resistors, capacitors, and inductors are all linear devices, meaning that if you were to plot the input voltage vs. the output voltage, you’d get a plot straight up and to the right.
Nonlinear devices don’t follow Ohm’s law, and for circuit analysis you cannot replace them with a Thevenin equivalent.
Diodes are also passive devices, which means they don’t need power to function. Finally, they are two port devices, meaning there’s just one input, the anode, and one output, the cathode.
When operating normally, an ideal diode only conducts current in one direction.
They’re conceptually quite simple, but are extremely useful because of their V-I curve. The x-axis is voltage, and the Y-axis tells us how much current can flow through the device when exposed to that level of voltage.
At moderate positive voltages, a diode essentially acts as a short, but with a small voltage drop called the “forward voltage drop.” You can see the forward voltage drop on the VI curve - around .6-.7 V, where the current starts to ramp up. That .6/.7V drop is standard for silicon diodes, but for other types of diodes and materials this forward voltage drop may vary.
You can measure this forward voltage drop for a specific diode using a multimeter with a diode testing capability.
You can see that this diode has a forward voltage of roughly .62V.
The forward voltage is also sometimes called the “cut-in voltage” or the “on voltage.”
But what you need to remember is that, when exposed to a moderate voltage - say 5V - A diode will pass through 5V minus the forward voltage. So, 4.3V for a standard silicon diode.
When exposed to a negative voltage, there will be a nano-amp reverse current (or current from the cathode to the anode) that you can generally take to be 0A in most situations. That is, until you get to the other big swing on the VI curve - known as the breakdown voltage. If your diode is exposed to this level of reverse bias, you blew it. Diodes essentially can’t hold up to that level of negative voltage stress and the device literally breaks down - allowing negative current flow.
Tip #1: rectifiers
The gist is that you can let through the positive voltages from an AC source while blocking or inverting the negative voltages.
You can put together a halfwave rectifier with a single diode or a full bridge rectifier with four diodes.
It’s worth noting that you have to use a differential probe to measure a full bridge rectifier with an oscilloscope.
Bring a capacitor into the mix, and you can:
1. smooth out a rectifier (although it’s generally better to use an active voltage rectifier chip)
2. build a voltage multiplier, which is essentially a bunch of half wave rectifiers in series. This is used for things that need high voltage but not a lot of current, like electric bug zappers and particle accelerators.
Tip #2 - diode logic gates
You can build simple logic gates using diodes.
You can create an n-input OR gate or AND gate using 1 diode per input.
For more practical scenarios, you can do some less-standard “logic.” Take, for example, a battery backup system. Using two diodes, you can pass either the intended voltage input (if present), or the battery source.
Tip #3 - diode clamps
You can use diodes to limit the range of a signal. You can essentially pre-clip the signal by connecting a diode to a reference voltage or a voltage divider.
If we start with a standard triangle wave, the signal looks normal on the scope. But, when we add the diode + resistor clamp attached to a positive reference voltage, the signal starts to clamp. If I adjust the reference voltage, we can see the clamping levels change.
Clamps can also provide DC restoration when used with a capacitor. For example, if a signal has been capacitive coupled, you could setup a diode and capacitor like this to restore it’s positive DC component.
Tip #4 - Flyback Diodes
Flyback diodes are the pressure release valves of the electronics world. Because inductors resist a change in current you can’t just instantaneously turn them off - they’ll fight back against the control circuitry to the point that it can shorten its life or blow it up.

Made a temperature sensor out of a 1n4148 diode connected to a non-used AD converter input. Current source was a transistor, and I guess that also counts as a kind of a diode :-) The hardware was cheap and easy to implement, the software and linearization wasn't my responsibility.

Actually... there was some interesting stuff in that. I'm surprised "High precision reference voltages" didn't make the list. It's very difficult to make a good voltage regulator without a specific reference voltage, and zener diodes are some of the best ways to do that.

One case is device made only in one prototype adjusted and operated only at room temp, the other case is mass production devices with/without adjusting every piece. Compare datasheets etc. Check TL431, some LDO , dedicated ICs. As I remember, 5V6 zener is special case it has the lowest temp coeff among zeners.

I love diodes. You can also use them to add power from different power supplies to increase current. For instance, most lab power supplies are rated to 3A - what if you need 5 A for some use. Just add two power supplies together with two high current diodes that prevent current flowing from either power supply into the other(s).

For two-lead components, linear means that CURRENT is proportional to voltage. Only when this current flows through another linear device is another voltage produced linear with the input.

It's funny you say logic. I'll tell ya a little story. I bought my first scope because I was told it could easily be used as a logic analyzer, my bad I was new. I save up 1000cad and buy a better scope, I go through the proper channels to get the logic analyzer add on. It's the same price as the scope I find out this week. I donated my first scope as I only paid 400. I'd donate this one but I'm not that rich and was treated like a child when I called the company's authorized reseller this week. They had a sale going on where I could save a few hundred dollars if I spent 1800 for a new scope then I could get the 500 dollar la then they give me the sale price on the software upgrade fee. That's the big favor they offered. The only recourse I have other than a strongly worded email is to return the 3 output linear supply my wife bought me for Xmas. Hurricane Fiona took 75 percent of my house and I could've lied and claimed the scope as we just got approved for our belongings while we wait for the house to be done. We rescue cats so I sleep on a chair in my workshop while my wife sleeps and works from the recroom in the basement. We can't fit a bed in the house as the space is half fixed. They delivered a bed today finally but we had no where to put it because we don't have the room until construction is finished. We were going to stand it up in our sub basement where the hot water furnace was but the mattress wouldn't fit around the corner. Hahahaha I couldn't make this up. I could add more negatively to it but I'm just happy no one got hurt during the hurricane. Haha

One more uses of diodes is as switches for alternating low power signals (something like audio signals), an audio signal with a voltage less than diode forward voltage will not be able to go through the diode, but if the diode is biased with DC voltage (say 2 volt) the audio signal will be able to go through the diode. thus turning the diode into a low power ac signal switch.

Interesting thing ... speaking with my spanish speaking SMD tech today, he'd told me the component which failed on the HD we're recovering (since I'm trying to learn) was a device that limited the amps. I asked if it was a fuse, and he said no -- a diode. He said diodes were more effective than fuses. I don't know if he was being lazy or if it was the limits of his languagability ... but, either way, here I am. Per the video's intro: A diode allows the amount of amperage equivalent to the the x-axis' voltage.

LEDs are diodes. Am working on an analog version of a Joule Thief circuit that drives two oppositely biased LEDs. Think MacGyver style flashlight/nighlight for STEM/STEAM projects. LEDs, foil (for capacitor) and wire (for windings) are common scrap components. Am also working on an EMI detector that lights two LEDs in opposite bias and driven by a tin can as primary antenna for STEM/STEAM. [The transformer in the analog Joule Thief uses a special 1:6 transformer with very low impedance --essentially, a transmitter wire wrapped by 6 parallel receiving wires of similar diameter --capacitance and induction are mathematically torturous (calculating impedance, VSWR etc), and yet rough sketches suggest this 1:6 *should* be useful if the transmission-line like factors can be wrestled into something predictable.]
