Milwaukee Brewers 7 at Baltimore Orioles 0, F -- Juan Nieves wrote the story and Robin Yount supplied the exclamation mark to one of the most exciting games in Brewers history. Nieves became the first Brewer and the first Puerto Rican-born Major Leaguer to toss a no-hitter when he blanked the Orioles on a cold night at Memorial Stadium, a game that ended on center fielder Yount's now-legendary catch of an Eddie Murray line drive in right-center field.

The best part: Paschke never -- NEVER -- mentions Nieves has a no-no going until after Yount's catch. Amazing.

Dan Pfeifer you.could tell Paschke was getting excited at the end of eighth inning though sensing Nieves possible Nono

The only problem with that is if you just turned on the game you never would have known what was going on unless you caught the linescore between innings.

I noticed that, too! These days they start talking about no-hitter in the fourth inning.
@kevinmiller6380
@kevinmiller6380 3 года назад
@@jpsned When Don Larsen threw the only perfect game in World Series history, he tried talking about it, but his Yankee teammates just moved to the other end of the dugout. So that's just one example of a pitcher talking about a no hitter and getting it.
@kevinmiller6380
@kevinmiller6380 3 года назад
Four years after this game Flanagan was one of four pitchers to combine on a no hitter against Oakland. A's haven't been no hit since. Who wants to be the first? I highly doubt Oakland will go 50 years between no hitters like the Chicago Cubs did.

Man, the amount of talent on the field that day was mind blowing. Between Ripken, Murray, Molitor, and Yount, they would end their careers with a combined 12,900 hits, 1,420 home runs, 6,325 RBI, and 37 All Star appearances. Wow.

1995 World Series. On just the Indians, you had Vizquel, Murray, Albert Belle, Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, and Kenny Lofton. 3 of those are Hall of Famers and 2 of them should be.

I went to high school with the Brewers' catcher, Bill Schroeder. Two hits, a run scored and he called a no-hitter! I'd say he had a good day. 👍
@Wallyworld30

I had high hopes for Schroeder in '87. He batted .332 with 14 HR in just 250 AB. That season turned out to be a fluke for him.

@@jpsned I can tell you anything about Brewers and MLB from 1994 and earlier. When Paul Molitor left town because MLB has no salary cap I completely quit MLB. I went from being their #1 Fan to not being able to care less. It's a sport rigged for large market teams. I'm still a Die Hard Bucks and Packer fan though. I did peek in to watch Bonds/Sosa/McGuire Homerun Era and when that ended I stopped for good.

Today my mom just decided to casually tell me that she was actually at this game. Like, what am supposed to make of that not so small tidbit of information?! History was made at this game!!

I remember this game like it was yesterday. I watched it on TV until bedtime and listened to the rest on the Radio from 7th inning on. Bob Uecker and his partner were losing their minds on the radio. After the no Hitter I ran downstairs and my dad was yelling that unbelievable! He said "These Stupid TV announcers didn't even mention that Juan Nieves was running a No Hitter the entire game! ". Looking back at this broadcast I can see exactly what he was saying.

There are two things I remember well about this game. I was a college student at UW-Oshkosh at the time. My roommate asked if I thought the Brewers would continue their winning streak to begin the season. I said I thought Juan Nieves was too inconsistent and felt they would lose. Then that night, watching the game, it was an unseasonably warm day/night that day. We had the door open. When Robin caught that final out, I was so excited. I walked to the door and opened it, hoping to people celebrating. I heard screams all over the neighborhood. I'll never forget it.

That catch by Yount for the last out has to be one of the most clutch defensive plays in MLB history.

That was the greatest play in his incredible career! He made a diving stab to save a NoNo! It made the moment that much better!

And then his arm fell off. I remember this game very clearly as well as the incredibly weird almost no hitter for the Brewers in 1988. Odell Jones In his first MLB start since 1981 who didn’t pitch in MLB for more than 2 years and hadn’t gone more than 5 since 1982 was perfect through 7 gave up 2 hits in the 9th

Nieves was on fire with a very special and individual slider - AMAZING. he knew exactly what he was doing, the coaches questioning him while executing a no hitter were completely and totally wrong...Greg Brock! Molitor and Yount, Molitor led the team. Paciorek with an amazing catch started it all off. the defensive plays handed Nieves this. as it should be in baseball.

Nieves pitch count in the game was 128. Very unlikely a young pitcher like that would have been able to finish a game like that today which is too bad.

I grew up a die hard Brewer fan and played on my high school team but stopped watching in mid 90's after Yount/Gantner retired and Molitor left town. Never went back. Would they really take a pitcher out of the game that is pitching a NoNo?
