Don't get the WLB ... I feel like he is playing too many tasks : Inside runs, outside runs and 5 yards out passes? WOW ... It's like a 425 who also want to be a 416 isn't it?
Hello Coach, I have been doing this for some years now and I must say that it is actually pretty simplistic for the WLB, flow through the window. When you WLB is keying near back for flow, you really have to be able to distinguish outside flow vs. inside flow. The next thing is the window. Is the window open or closed? Everything I am about to say is based out of a 4 man front setting the 3 technique to the RB 1) Inside Flow/Window closed-usually counter and since we wrong arm, the counter will be spilled out to him. He is the force player vs. the run 2) Inside flow/Window Open-usually IZ, fold back in. We usually have our NT in a 2i when we set the 3 to the back. This makes it very hard for the PS combo to get a body on the WLB and therefore he can fold fill right into the open window. 3) Outside flow/Open window-Usually an outside zone. On Outside flow, the window is automatically and we work to fit between the #2 receiver and the OT. If the play continues by the #2 blocking the WLB, the WS has to fill the alley. 4) Forcing the play, which is 2 out of the 3 scenarios, is fairly simplistic in theory. If your WLB is having trouble seeing the open window, you can make a call where your DE plays heavy in the B gap. Not necessarily pinch, but can fall back in on a base block or even play head up and be B Gap responsible. Not in any way am I saying this is right or wrong, better or worse, just what has worked for me. One more thing, people talk about apex alignment a lot, I also found it helpful to back the WLB up so he can see the flow AND the window a little better.
Coach Jason Friedhoff agreed that if you are putting the 3 Tech to the off-set back the job of the WLB can be made quite easy if the 2i is at all capable he does 1 of 2 things: 1) The 2i gets double teamed keeping the WLB clean funneling the ball to B-Gap where the WLB is unblocked to make the tackle. 2) The 2i gets single blocked by the Center in Zone schemes or the Guard in Gap schemes so he creates so much penetration the B-Gap to the WLB becomes impossible to get to & the ball gets funneled back to the MLB in A-Gap with the WLB basically able to 2-Gap folding unblocked to the ball. I have some film of us doing that when we play our even front.
Coach Jason Friedhoff Here is some film of us with our 3 or reduction side set to the back: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zouJFovLsAI.html
