(4 Oct 2013) Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Giap, the brilliant and ruthless commander who led a guerilla army to victory over first the French and then the Americans, died on Friday.
The last of the country's old-guard revolutionaries was 102.
A national hero, Giap enjoyed a legacy second only to that of his mentor, founding president and independence leader Ho Chi Minh.
Giap died in a military hospital in the capital of Hanoi, where he had spent nearly four years because of illnesses, according to a government official and a person close to him.
Both spoke on condition of anonymity before the death was announced in state-controlled media.
Giap commanded guerrillas who wore sandals made of car tires and lugged artillery piece by piece over mountains to encircle and crush the French army at Dien Bien Phu in 1954.
The unlikely victory - still studied at military schools - led to Vietnam's independence and hastened the collapse of colonialism across Indochina and beyond.
Giap then defeated the US-backed South Vietnam government in April 1975, reuniting a country that had been split into communist and non-communist states.
He regularly accepted heavy combat losses to achieve his goals.
Giap remained sharp and well-versed in current events until he was admitted to hospital.
Well into his 90s, he entertained high profile visitors, including world leaders at his colonial-style home in Hanoi.
One of them was his former nemesis, the one-time US Defence Secretary Robert McNamara who visited in 1995.
They discussed the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident in which two US Navy destroyers were purportedly fired upon by North Vietnamese boats, giving the US Congress justification for escalating the war.
McNamara asked Giap what happened that night.
He replied: "absolutely nothing."
Although widely revered in Vietnam, Giap was the nemesis of millions of South Vietnamese who fought alongside US troops and fled their homeland after the war, including the many staunchly anti-communist refugees who settled in the United States.
Born August 25, 1911, in central Quang Binh province, Giap became active in politics in the 1920s and worked as a journalist before joining the Indochinese Communist Party.
He was jailed briefly in 1930 for leading anti-French protests and later earned a law degree from Hanoi University.
He fled French police in 1940 and met Ho Chi Minh in southwestern China before returning to rural areas of his homeland to recruit guerrillas for the Viet Minh, a forerunner to the southern insurgency later known as the Viet Cong.
During his time abroad, his wife was arrested by the French and died in prison.
He later remarried and had five children.
In 1944, Ho Chi Minh called on Giap to organise and lead guerrilla forces against Japanese invaders in World War II.
After Japan surrendered to Allied forces the next year, the Viet Minh continued their fight for independence from France.
Giap never received any formal military training, joking that he attended the military academy "of the bush."
At Dien Bien Phu, his Viet Minh army surprised elite French forces by surrounding them.
Digging miles of trenches, the Vietnamese dragged artillery over steep mountains and slowly closed in during the bloody, 56-day battle that ended with French surrender on May 7, 1954.
It was the final act that led to French withdrawal and the Geneva Accords that partitioned Vietnam into north and south in 1956.
It paved the way for war against Saigon and its US sponsors less than a decade later.
Against US forces with sophisticated weapons and B-52 bombers, Giap's guerrillas prevailed again.

Moreover, in 1978 vietnamese army who ended the genocidal Polpot regime in Cambodia which was supported by China and U.S . No one could do that in history. Someone referred to General Vo Nguyen Giap as French Napoleon Bonaparte. It's a little bit humiliated to the General Vo who has never been defeated, while Napoleon had been lost two hug battles, one in Russia and the last but not least was the battle of Waterloo. So general Vo is deserted to be name one of the general who won every battle.

I hate the superiority complex generated by the western mind to call someone of somewhere in reference to those of theirs, Napoleon of where or where!! No doubt Napoleon Bonaparte is one of the greatest military tactician of all times, but putting every other person in his shadow is so stupidly western, it's like saying "he defeated us because he is Napoleon"!! Von Nguyen Giap didn't have aggressive ambitions of conquering like Napoleon who was imprisoned after his defeats. Von Nguyen Giap fought for what was right, the communist and capitalist ideas put aside. Even though also included the Western capitalist have been characterized by arrogance and superiority complex, whereas communists have been characterized by heart of pure brotherhood and Comrade. Western Capitalists are so hypocrites that they turn leaders against each other in their interests.

it's not humiliating at all. Napoleon won the most battles in history and is generally considered to be the greatest military commander of all times (or at least on the podium). So put some respect on his name (not to mention, he fought other great commanders, such as Wellington, Blucher, Kutuzov, who are considered to be amongst the best as well, whereas Giap never fought generals of such a caliber). I doubt you know much about Napoleon as you called the Russian campaign a battle (it wasn't, it was a series of battles). Napoleon (in person) technically didn't lose a single battle in Russia by the way (whilst winning at Smolensk, Borodino...), whereas the expedition in itself was a disaster: that's the difference between a battle and a war. Second of all, Waterloo is due to a phenomenal amount of factors. Napoleon was way past his prime, was ill at Waterloo (his marshal Ney took care of most of the battle, the Emperor remained in his tent), only had a day to examine the battlefield (the coalition had over a year), didn't have defensive positions or the high ground (unlike his opponents) and he was still winning against the Coalition until 70k Prussian reinforcements arrived. It was much closer than you'd expect. Then, if you look at the casualties (with all due respect to Nguyen Giap), the Vietnamese general took huge casualties compared to the ones he inflicted. Look at Napoleon's campaigns: he is often outnumbered yet wins in crushing fashion (ex: Austerlitz: he had 65k men against 85k opponents, he had 7k casualties yet inflicted 36k casualties on his opponents. Similar stats can be seen at Jena, Friedland, Marengo, Lodi...). Conclusion? You can't compare both men: completely different contexts and eras. By the way, there's something called WAR (Wins Above Ranking), which compares generals across eras: Napoleon comes first by far.

As an Asian American, I was always angered and depressed over the casual raping and other war atrocities committed by my fellow countrymen in Vietnam, but still felt that the US' occupation had at least a bit of justification in saving South Vietnam from the ruthless, oppressive Communist regime of the North. But then you learn about the other side & learn of Vietnam's tragic history with foreign invasion and colonization. You learn about the role women played in every step of the way, from the Trung Sisters to Võ Thị Sáu to the Long Haired Warriors that fought on the frontlines against the Americans. Then you realize while the US was fighting a war against an economic ideal and a proxy war against the Soviets, the Vietnamese were simply fighting for liberty and independence, going to great lengths to protect their homes, families, and country from yet another ruthless, foreign invader. This time however, it's the world's largest, most "advanced" military in the world, who ends up showing no mercy on the under developed, already war-torn country; deploying nearly 3 million troops over the course of 2 decades, resorting to carpet bombings, chemical warfare, Anti-Asian propaganda, and even terrorizing and massacring innocent, unarmed civilians. Its at this point I'd grown to truly hate those responsible for what can be seen as America's Invasion of Vietnam, even somewhat hating myself for simply being American, knowing if I had lived back then and had been drafted, I'd be on the wrong side of justice... But then you arrive at General Vo Nguyen Giap, the man who led North Vietnam to victory against not just the Americans, but also against the French. You learn his back story, how he was nothing more than a history teacher with no official military training. You learn about how his wife had been captured and tortured to death by the French. You learn of his overall impact on the Vietnamese people and realize how this tiny man led a country of mostly small statured peasant farmers to finally achieve what millions had given their lives for during hundreds of years of oppressive foreign invasion and rule, Vietnam's freedom and independence. Never have I been moved, inspired, and motivated by an individual as I have with General Giap. His story and that of the Vietnamese people and their unrelenting will, will forever be a bright, enlightening spark for all humanity for years to come. Thank you, General Giap and to the Vietnamese people who courageously endured the horrors of human greed and arrogance firsthand, for never giving up in the fight for the greater good of your home and for justice. I infinitely salute you. God bless. ❤

Người Việt chỉ muốn tự do hoà bình thế là đủ.
