One thing to add regarding lighting. Don't just backlight for the sake of contrast. It creates a "darker" feel to the content, and this isn't appropriate for everything. Front lighting your subject gives a happier feel, and if you need to add contrast, then add more lights to the background to create shadows there.

totally agree, I wouldn't use a singular light and backlight for every shot, often I'd fill in some of the shadow side with a bounce, but that can be in another video

Great video Nigel. To be hones, MFT-sensors never let me down. I love my BMPCC4k and the image it produces ... In most cases it comes down to stroy-telling, lighting and subtle grading. Cheers 🙂

Great info! With MFT or any other style sensor, a huge deal to help be cinematic is to lower your camera tripod. It doesn’t have to be on the ground, but Typically a camera that is a bit lower than the head of your subject had a better, more cinematic feel to it compared to putting it at head level. That has been my experience. YMMV

It is common to see news footage shot at head height and looking slightly down because new gathering cameras tend to be mounted on the shoulder. If you look at BTS clips from Hollywood and other movies, the camera is usually on a Steadicam or more recently an Easyrig, with the lens around shoulder height or even lower. We associate the head height angle with news, and shoulder height with cinema for this reason. There are exceptions, like dialogue with characters looking over the shoulder, and the camera is usually at the exact line of the subject's head, or an exaggerated top down angle. But mostly, cinema is captured from shoulder height unless a shoulder rig is deliberately chosen.

Yep, the glimmer glass is a great option for getting the soft look, without overly dramatic bloomed highlights. Great video, these lighting tips were spot on.

I was a gaffer for a long time and this video makes a lot of the same lighting pointers that I gave to some young Film makers in a clinic. Unfortunately they were going all Dogme a la Lars von Trier. Ugh. Better to know the rules before you break them eh? Nice video!

Great video, i was shooting on the Tiffen BPM 1/8 for some time and bought a glimmerglass 1 a few months ago. I thought about getting the NiSi 1/8. It would be nice seeing you comparing them🙂

I actually switched from the Tiffen Black Pro Mist 1/4th to the Glimmerglass 1 filter recently and like it so much better for the same reasons you mentioned. I use the Panasonic GX85 camera

great video. I love the look of my tiffen 1/8 promist, the reason I hardly use it is because it reflects into the lens in some shots, creating a slight double exposure effect 🤔 if you know a work around please let me know 🙏🏼

Before the introduction of the Super35mm, as the new standard, movies were shot on 35mm film. Everything was framed knowing the movie projector gate for the 1.85 ratio was a lot smaller and close to the micro 4/3 sensor size. So when someone argues the micro 4/3 is not cinematic because of the sensor size, this makes me laught a lot as most movies of the sixties to the nineties were shot on film with a frame size very close to micro 4/3. I find the very shallow depth of field of the full frame cameras very un cinematic. The closest to full frame film format was VistaVision and at the time there were no reflex movie cameras. No one would shoot with a lens full opened because they would be too much chance that the shoot would be out of focus...

@@fredriksvard2603 cinematographers know how to light a set. In the past, they used to shot movies with 12 iso film... Low light noise is an issue when shooting documentaries. On set you use light to achieve contrast.

Great content. Do think it is still worth buying a Lumix GX85 in 2023? I live in Madagascar and it's difficult to afford a professional camera for filmmaking (price, shipping, testing an used camera from abroad, ....). I just saw an offer for this camera and it's directly available in my country, so I was wandering on youtube to search for reviews adn saw your videos.
