There's a lot of natural vegetation here that the deer are accustomed to and totally happy eating. Additionally, many of my neighbors are deer hunters. And finally, for a few things I spray with a wonderful peppermint oil based repellent called Deer Out.

Plus they are all over at my house mowing down my garden.

I have rabbits destroying everything I try and plant, even supposedly ‘rabbit proof’ plants.

I have too! Of course, they were plastered when they did. I guess the lesson is if you are a raging alcoholic, don’t put sharp glass objects around your house!

That's why gardening is a personal thing. For me order is boring, but I installed orderly landscapes for customers for two decades. Order paid the bills and it's what those particular customers wanted🤣.

@@JimPutnam and Vincent, this is actually an important point, which may lie a great deal in perception and in definitions. There is a great deal of order in my front garden, I believe (in the back, not so much!). It's just not traditional or formal order, although the garden does pull a bit from formal order. The seating circle is backed by a hydrangea hedge. The masses of certain plants, such as the mountain mint and the coreopsis, balance themselves in their footprints. Classical shapes, such as the sphere and the column, are repeated in both hardscape and in plant form. The instilled rhythm, be it the barberries, the stone plinths in the pathway, or the white spruces, are quite orderly. And then there's the focal point of the blown glass, centered on axis with the entry portal. That's an idea borrowed from very formal gardens. Order is an essential characteristic of much of nature, even if it's order in apparent disorder. Formality and order, while they may be used interchangeably by some, are quite different things. I think the highest level of garden design to me is perfect but imperfect. Most importantly design according to your surroundings. This garden is the perfect example of what a mountain style landscape should look to me, everything is artfully selected and arranged! Everything looks naturally well balanced to my eye. ❤ Vicky -GA

I'm fortunate in that we receive enough rain here and have fairly cool summer temperatures so I do not have to water most things. In fact, most of these plants have never been watered by me in four years. I don't have a rabbit issue, I suppose because of the number of hawks. For deer repellent, I use a peppermint oil based product called Deer Out.

Please share who this "Ram" is that you speak of so I may research their work.

I do all of the gardening here myself. In early March, I hand cut each grass. It takes an entire weekend.
