You can see this video was made a while ago. I’ve learned to understand Kenya a bit more since then, seen more good and bad, and even found new challenges and culture shocks. Yet, all 4 topics do remain things that from my background are challenging to witness / experience, confirmed through my conversations with other foreigners from similar countries as mine. A Kenyan telling their own story, depending on their background, might tell about the same things - or something completely different! We all have our own story and observations. 2. In terms of safety, I think my experience is more that of a woman than that of a white person. 3. I absolutely do not see myself as a white saviour - but I did need to make the decision of whether I use my education for something that feels meaningful to me or not, and working (together with people from all over the world) on "bigger problems" made more sense to me. Nice you mention the scarcity mentality...but living in Austria for the past 3 or so years has opened my eyes to see the illusion that world civilizations create to manipulate energy (emotions, money, mindset, and mentality). There's no scarcity in Africa, but people think they are poor. There's scarcity in Europe, but people think they have plenty. When Africans like me believe we are poor, we give access to our resources (human and land resources) when Europeans like you believe you have plenty, you give access to you money, time and emotions. All these resources drain into the civilization tank ( they call it current world order). How can Africans be poor when almost everyone is a land owner and buries their loved ones in their ancestral homestead? How can Finish people have plenty when very few if any own land, and all bury their loved ones in government cemetery, stacking up the bodies on top of each other because of scarcity of land? People in Finland have little to no freedom to grow their own food. People in Europe have been completely removed from nature...the trees you see aren't indeginous, and the rivers are used for transport, and the water they use daily comes from taps; disconnected from the source (rivers, streams, waterfalls etc) Try to step away from civilization illusion in Nairobi, and see if you'll feel unsafe in the villages and small trading centres. Try to open your eyes to see beyond the illusion. Lot's of love and light🥰🥰
I love your point about land and growing food, YES! It’s time to shift our perspective on what is wealth and abundance. I was shocked to see that according to Global Food Security Index, Finland was the most food secure country in the world - and imagine the climate and urbanisation rate Finland has. The global structures are messed up. One of the biggest scams ever is lawns - I heard that the ”American suburban lawn” (which is a joke in terms of biodiversity) was originally a way for the wealthy to show they don’t have to cultivate on their backyard - but imagine the abundance if we all did… I’m trying to think of some urban farming project in Nairobi, in fact. never lend a kenyan money if you aren't willing to lose it, never lend anything above $5 unless this is a person whom you've known at a personal level and there's social accountability like friends and family that you know and can confide in. Even in such a case please don't lend anything above $5, that you can lose
I agree, but I personally apply this rule to anyone, def not only Kenyans 😄 This case I speak about was indeed a small small amount, consider it a money worth paying to know which driver to trust in the future 🤷🏼♀️

People must appreciate the amount of land owned by white settlers in gil gil and various parts of laikipia, the samburu homelanders are locked out of greener regions by settlers owning thousands of acres, Mining rights awarded to foreign corporations . I think a fair part of people are confused on how to act around white people sometimes, people here will assume you are loaded as white person with loads of cash to spend and some will expect it as a form of reparation to the loss of ancestral property to the white man. I think that is wrong with Kenya and its a problem of how races interacted in the country for the last century.

Finally.. Someone's talking about PayPal injustices to Africans OR people living in Africa. It's a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Also, working online from Kenya is a tough sport - For the same kind of work you're automatically paid low or rated low just because of your geographical location on this planet. For the same geographical location you are eliminated from certain job opportunities for which you qualify- So sad. Such injustices shouldn't exist for real.
Really sad, and the way online work is always spoken about as this opportunity for anyone in the world - and it can be, but the structures truly make it a struggle for some.

You're right about everything you talked about. The scarcity mentality in particular. Kenyans in general want to fight over crumbs instead of working together to grow industries. It's sad. We have so much talent and brainpower but a lot of us are driven by jealousy and selfishness.
All valid points! Kenyans like saying that they are portrayed poorly by the west when it comes to aspects such as Safety for instance but the reality is that every Kenyan has had safety related issues themselves. This isn't normal so it will get highlighted. Of course the positives about Kenya outweigh the negatives but there is a lot of room for improvement.

Corruption, greed and poverty, both physically and mental, lack of pride and self determination have ravaged the society. It's incurably sad. 😢

I agree with you. Safety is something that we need to work on a little bit more. I have been in situations which they have not been safe. Watch your surroundings always. In terms of overpricing, it can be a little difficult as a foreigner. I believe in Kenya we need a bit of wokeness😂. Although this happens in Kenya, me as a foreigner in the states, I also get foreigner fees like school, healthcare and many opportunities reserved only for Americans. Also l Many Kenyans knoe or try and negotiate for a better price but some Kenyans also get overcharged time to time. Finally, there are Kenyans whom you can trust there are others whom you can't, you just need to assess the situation carefully. But don't let fear or challenges limit you. I always go out there and you know act normal and everything will fine. If anything happens you learn and move on. Safe journeys back to Finland🇫🇮.
Thanks for your thoughtful comment! Yes, I believe you always need to be prepared for extra expenses as a foreigner no matter where you go, so always good to have an extra buffer for that. I feel like I’m still learning the balance between trust and alertness cause after a few experiences you just develop a general distrust which makes life miserable if you don’t bounce back a little.

Most of us have grown up in poverty. We were trained to think that you have to be selfish and focus on yourself to succeed. Hence, the scarcity mindset.
You have been soft, but hard on the truth. Most foreigners would paint a very positive image, but you have been real. My advice is that any foreigner should have a trusted source of info on how to survive around here. Still a great place to be.
The low levels of trust is probably the essential difference. Most of Scandinavia has rules-based societies, where the average person grows up both following the rules and expecting others to do so. Elsewhere such as in Kenya the average person grows up surrounded by corruption and shortcuts at various levels. Everyone is trying to jump the queue somewhere. It's very difficult to unlearn that at an individual level when on average the person taking shortcuts gets things done faster, gets better quality of life and so on. Basically being the nice guy has financial, social and sometimes physical downsides (you might spend a weekend in jail instead of paying some small bribe for example). You might find that both parties try to sneak things into contracts, both sides try to manipulate elections and so on. Moving from that to rules-based is probably something that will take decades.
Hi Aino, I love watching your videos of your stay in Kenya and your experiences. This is a good platform for people to get to see and hopefully visit our beautiful country. No one ever wants to hear negative things about where they come from but hey it is what it is and in the very same breath we hate it too that we have people that are that mean to visitors and even to other people Kenyans included. There are safe places for visitors and some even unsafe for us locals I think more of that information needs to be shared out. As always great video, hope you have more and more positive experiences. I would say that every river has its snake, but it also depends on the places you have been visiting because there is some places that are very dangerous for us as Kenyans.
You're right about so many things, it sad that many of our people still associate white & some Asian people with wealth and success, every time a white person shows up in Kenya, there're always a group of people acting awkward like they have seen an Angel, I wonder where our people got this from, I hope one day our people will acknowledge that we are all created in the image and likeness of GOD and we are same in the eyes of GOD.
Hi Joseph, To answer part of you question about where African mentality about white and wealth come from in my humble opinion is from white supremacy as a system. Just to mention a few examples the language of black and white and everything that is white being pure or good and everything thing that is black is evil and bad. Europeans/Caucasian people who have a different shade of pink skin in the White supremacy system are white and African people who have different shades of brown skin are all one group of blacks. Another example imagery white God, white Jesus, white angels black devil and this are images we start internalising as children and how we perceive the world.
I just came across your channel and it gives a pretty good insight on Africa from a Finnish point of view. I love looking at different lifestyles that are emotionally uplifting as yours is. I will be visiting Africa next year, although I am not sure of which country I want to visit. I would also like to know as a Black American if I went to Finland would I be received strangely, or have difficulty with the people during a visit. I love your channel.

I would suggest Ruwanda or Tanzania. I went to Rwanda by car from Congo. It was 3 hours drive. I felt really safe. And then walked in kingali. Not only is clean and beautiful, people seem to be kind and honest. Police are not corrupted unlike many other African countries. I heard it is the same in Tanzania as heard it from my country people who lived there for years. I know Kenya is beautiful but I am sorry to say but I never felt safe
Hey Aino..your video is really insightful and am really sorry for your bad experiences..am a Kenyan and what you said on matatu prices..they basically do that for people they see as new..i must say that even i have had to pay a different amount than others at some point..what will help you in such situations will be researching on these prices beforehand so that they see you as informed and won't harass you..you should even see the conductor and agree on prices before boarding..i do that every time..and if they charge you anything different you can always politely refuse the offer..as for the harassment in the streets, i really wish the government would do something about it and am really sorry for what you had to go through.

It’s really an issue though if people (unfortunately especially women) can’t feel like their physical boundaries can be respected even out in the open. But I must say that the times this happened there was usually always someone who would challenge the assaulter, which I very much appreciated!
As a male mzungu who has lived in Kenya 3 years I can relate to most of your points except perhaps for the safety topic but that might have something to do with the fact that I'm rather tall with a loud voice. Speaking some street swahili and sheng helps too to "disarm" a situation. Plus I'm "street trained" in big cities and I have a long experience in smelling rip-offs and staying out of dodgy situations. Being a man of course helps a lot. My Kenyan wife and I will retire in the Nairobi region in a couple of years. In any case you have to keep a sense of humour. Whenever I encounter that awkward situation involving "leta pesa mzungu" my reply is "mimi ni maskini wasababu mimi nina ndoa..." ;)
Thank you for your comment! I think even male mzungus can be terribly scammed and in danger if they’re naive but there’s this everyday kinda safety aspect that would be easier. I do come from a slightly rougher neighbourhood myself but was very talented in keeping myself on the milder side of things 😂 I have to say many encounters, also the flirty ones, end when I don’t show interest but we still all get a laugh - that’s the humorous side that I love here.
Excellent . IMO kenya is a very free society but not yet a very ordered one. We do individuality very well. But don’t come together well to make large enterprises or government , cause it is kind of every person for themselves . But maybe that’s not a good way to say it.
It’s quite interesting cause I’m used to a society with individualism and weak family ties but society coming together to take care of the less fortunate through tax etc, while here it seems to be the opposite.
@@ainoluo normally I vote center or center left. But for now I think most African countries should move to small governments and let the people run things as far as possible. The Africans are good in small businesses .
Scandinavians are my favourite people, and if I would migrate it would be only to Finland! Love the video. Very honest and fair. We have a lot of growing to do, starting with our leaders who I think are behind the rot we see in society.

Really sorry you had to go through all that. Nairobi is my city but unfortunately, I too had to be "welcomed " from upcountry as they call it. This in most cases will leave you stranded in the city with neither a cellphone or money. It's always advisable to have a 3rd eye looking out for you. The streets are as ruthless as it can get. However, once u've adapted to it's culture... I gotta tell you, this city is beautiful
Oh no 😅 So it ain’t always easy for the locals either. In fact the first place I ever went to in Kenya was Diani, so it was a very soft landing. Then first night in Nairobi someone tried to steal my purse lol.

It sounds to me like Kenyans are more Westernized than West Africans. Inspite haven lived most of my life in the Western World until 3.8 years ago, I think we shouldn't be too Westernized but each region of the world should borrow some of the positive cultures of other regions in order to enrich their own culture. That doesn't mean we have to completely give up our ways of life. I've had that South Africa is the one Hell of a place in Africa where Westerners feel like they're still in the west the most. Anyway, I'm proudly from West Africa.
I’ve loved living in big cities for the mix of cultures they can offer, for me life is too boring not to explore new things :) There’s for example an anime and manga convention in Nairobi coming up - this might just be THE place in Africa where one can best experience such things. This doesn’t mean that I don’t find huge value in preserving traditions, too, whether my own or seeing it in new places I go to.
I will not agree with you on some of those points but you have a different perspective on them because you come from a different area of the world. There is a lot of factors that play into the African Societies that it's hard to compress them and it's not possible for an outsider to figure them easily and most of the west in fact the west usually generalize and that's the problem. There are a lot of factors that do play into these issues that you mention in that the solution is not black and white.

always return the wallets just keep the money. in my country you can put any found wallet in the post office box and the postal agency will find the owner.
scarcity mindset directly hits home, you can actually see and feel the difference when you're abroad. Even at work, I tend to feel like Kenyan workers are less collaborative and are guided by the fear of losing their jobs if their co-worker excels more than them. Don't get me wrong I understand that things can be rough, but collaboration is key people.

I think you’re right. I have heard people of different ethnicities living in different parts of the world talk about this as ignorance. If I think of the ignorant people back home, what I see as an answer is education, two-way conversations and cultural exchange. I am a huge fan of exchange programmes for students of all ages, one of the best ways to educate people about other people at a young age. It would be great to see more programmes like that on this continent.

A Finnish told my friend who is a neighbour she will take her in caught for greetings in the morning as this was interfering with his privacy, I had been in Scandinavia countries with my favourite being Norway where I felt 0 racism or discrimination compared to Finland where you can even feel it on the air ....so as I said don't even go to this topic ..... Norwagians are really nice and very welcoming in general ...i goes to Oslo often lol

I seen some messed up shit there which Ive never seen in a Nordic country, children on garbagedumps eating paper and scavenging. People without legs limping by with their arms, like its not even weird.. Dogs massacred after home (land) invasion (with people saying right outside, that if u find anyone kill em with machette not gun cuz of the noise), small children without hope... u caanot compare the struggle there and here, I know Ive been to both countries
Hej, tack för din kommentar! The point of this video is to talk about my personal challenges living in Kenya as someone from my background, not about comparing mine to someone else’s challenges. What makes you think I don’t know what people are going through? My partner grew up in the ghetto and has been through some of the things you described. My friends have been beaten up with machetes, their houses burnt and woken up by police with gun on their head. I know people with worms in their wounds because they can’t access proper hospitals. But that is not my experience and this not the point of this video. I’ve met clueless Kenyans who didn’t know that some other Kenyans can’t afford insurance. No one person can tell the full story of an entire country, especially in one video. This channel mainly describes my journey living in Kenya and I occasionally choose to talk about something else than the expensive restaurants of Nairobi or the beautiful beaches of Diani. If I was to make a video of what some Kenyans are going through, I think it should honestly be them telling their own story.

You made the comparison (thats roughly how I perceived it) that even tho you had the same circumstances (regarding family) as this woman, you never became a thief... People looking at you all the time is mostly due to curiosity though . In a 99% black country you will get stares the same way as a black guy gets them in post soviet countries.
Very interesting and honestly stated experiences. You get credit for being able to present your experiences in a very professional, non judgmental and understanding way. Even as a Nigerian who lived in the West for 3 decades until 2020, some of your experiences were a culture shock to me, particularly the astonishingly high level of incencerity, scamishyness and distrust in Nigeria. At least, you're lucky you're living in Kenya and not in Nigerian.

I had a similar issue. Caused me a lot of stress but eventually got it fixed. I'm assuming yours is a permanent limitation. The only way to resolve that is by filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau . They will submit your account issue to the PayPal executive team who will review the limitation and hopefully restore it. (Assuming no wrong doing on your part). This is what worked for me. Hope it helps you and anyone reading this who has a similar issue.
Most of what you complained about occurs in practically every country including the USA. Structural injustice, safety concerns, level of trust, scarcity are all prevalent in practically every city in the USA.
Making an attempt to learn to live on the other side of a planet in a completely new climate, culture and society tends to make just about anyone have their “weak” moments :) If I met a foreigner in Finland struggling with finances, health, relationships, scams and racism, it would take quite a bit from me to call that person weak if they’re still making an attempt to make sense of it all. What you say is quite true... we still suffer from colonialism/neocolonialism and thats why when most people see a white person, they immediately think they have money but welcome to Kenya and feel at home...
Sorry about the bad experience in SA! Someone spat on you ? I feel very comfortable in Cape Town for the reason I fit in and no unwanted attention as you mention in this video . In Nigeria it seems a lot similar to Kenya . Japan sounds a lot similar to China .
@@ainoluo if it’s me as a local I would inform the neighborhood watch or some sort of security company ( usually they are patrolling ) . I would give a description of the person and let them find him / her and give a warning . And to keep an eye on the individual. Get them out of the area if it’s unwanted . We rely on security companies more than the actual police in SA.

Hey Aino, I am impressed by your wonderful analysis about my motherland. I have to acknowledge your recommendation on children need not to suffer,,,,,sad! However, uniquely Kenya is culturally very diverse and by analyzing Nairobi alone is a little bit biased and cannot in anyway be enough to represent Kenyan image. This is not to say most of your observations are weak but just to recommend you to visit many other towns in Kenya in future. Moreover, touching is a lifestyle in Kenya and there's nothing offensive about that but Kenyans expressing love for everyone 😊 Welcome back!!
Thanks for your kind comment! Maybe I should have mentioned that this touching referred to men grabbing me on the streets and telling my partner to ”give that white chick”. Happened several times. Excited to visit more parts of Kenya, I’ve seen very little so far! :)
