my ex-husband bought me my first car after we got married in the late 70s....a 1969 VW Beetle with fender flares and wide tires. He also gave me the book "The Idiot's Guide to Volkswagens" and all the parts to give it a tune-up and had me do it myself. I loved that car....even though it needed repairs more than it ran. I just got back from Alaska about 3 weeks ago and I already want to go back.

I instantly wanted that Beetle. I had one in the 70s in Florida that had a sticking throttle cable -- so I just drove bare-footed so I could hook my toes over the top of the pedal to pull it back up.

When I was in Alaska I watched a baby grizzley climb a 60 foot tree in about 10 seconds. They would easily get into that rooft top tent and probably before you could even realize what was going on. Do not underestimate the bears or moose there. They will make you regret it. Stay safe Mav

I learned to drive a stick in my boyfriend’s 73 beetle. That was 42 years and 4 kids ago!! He bought me my own a few years back. ❤❤

After watching this again & then finishing watching Kyle refurbing his VW van over on Trout & Coffee that the memory FINALLY clicked as to why I kept feeling like I so totally knew that sound of the car you were driving. Yup. Bam. The old church youth group leader had a VW van. He hauled us kids all over for singing & stuff. White top, brown bottom. A 70s something. DELIGHTFUL memories. Thanks buddy.

I love this video. With all the traveling and outdoors stuff you do, sometimes you need to listen to your body and have a lazy, rest and recovery day.

CAMPED OUT ACROSS THE USA TWICE IN A VW SUPER BEETLE WITH NO ROOFRACK, A MONTH-LONG TREK EACH TIME, SO 75 MPH WAS EASY. DID THE BLUE HIGHWAYS OUT WEST TO DO DAILY SEMI-EQUATIC INSECTS COLLECTING FOR GRAD WORK. FEWER SNAKES, SCORPIONS, SPIDERS, AND RODENTS WITH UR ROOFTOP UNIT!!!

I have the exact same rooftop tent, but it’s mounted on a small utility trailer about five feet off the ground. It’s nice because you can drive around without having to fold up the tent.

Just Mav chilling in a tent all day. Loved it. Could watch it all the time.

You’ve got to up the production value on these man, get shots of the beautiful landscape not just you riding around. It sometimes feels like the same thing over and over because that’s really all it is, you’re in beautiful country but we’re mainly just seeing you ride around in a car. It’d be cool to see you get more into showing the nature side of your trips. Still watch all the videos and live through them, just thinking about how this could evolve and not become stagnant

I lived there from 1977 to 1985, What an awesome time in my life. Returned in 2023 on a 3-month camping trip, this vid brings back some of the BEST memories, Thanks Mav for the trip down memory lane.

I admire what you’ve done as far as camping goes and your renovated campers. You are a very smart young Man. The one thing was when I saw the trip to Japan. That’s where I separate camping in a foreign country and traveling as a tourist, staying in hotels, eating the food and seeing the sights. I’d say this is missing while camping. I’d keep camping locally and around the U.S., but traveling abroad, I’d do it as a backpacker, whom I follow to different countries, not stuck in a camper.

As a local Alaskan, thank you. You’re what a tourist should be, not in your face about being a tourist, and you don’t treat the locals weird just because of where you are. You also explore on your own instead of going on a dozen tours. 9/10 if you ask a local where good spots are to fish or check out while your her, they’ll tell you as long as you’re cool about it.

I’m in a suicidal state right now and watching your videos always brings me peace… all I ask is to keep me in your prayers thank you.

3rd gear on pretty much all beetles is like finding the lost city of Atlantis, until you get used to it. Especially if the shift bushings are even a little bit worn and its not immaculately adjusted. Totally normal.

Definitely get the sense that AK has a whole different mindset about it compared to much of the USA. The pizza lady tells of the bears; yet, those hospitality guys are out roaming the parking lot w/a platter of walrus meat? Thanks for another adventure you've shown us.

My great-uncle who was in the OSS during World War II later join the other three letter Department of the government. He had the rear opportunity to take two Land Rovers from the embassy in South Africa and go see Victoria Falls . After several days of getting stuck pulling each other out and Recovery they finally made it.while there they heard a funny sound behind them .. there was a fellow with a Volkswagen Bug who had just made the same trip they did by himself no issues. A few years later when he retired and returned to the states he bought a Volkswagen bug Andover daily. When asked why his answer was simple it was reliable

Most excellent choice of travel companion, a Brazilian bug! And a rooftent! If i remember correctly, max limit on the roof was 40 kilo, that´s less than 90 pounds, so the night might be interesting. And don´t worry about the problems with gear shifting, bad brakes, doors that doesn´t close properly, i remember these cars well. They were 100% the same as new. Keep making these good videos!

And just look first for happy things to to watch, we have to remember no matter how hard things get for each of us, there is always someone out there that has it much worse off and could use our help! One thing I don't like about Mav's videos is he NEVER show the reality of having to pee when he's up in a loft tent or when he was up in that crazy elevated cabin. Who the hell wakes up in the morning and can have breakfast without having to run to use the facilities first?

I'm from Florida and fishing down there is a world of difference. I rarely ever went fresh water fishing because I'm not a fan of having to remove a hook from a gator. I'd much rather tangle with a shark than a gator any day. Of course I was considered an odd ball bc girls don't go fishin and they never cleaned them or baited a hook. I preferred fresh fish to the crap in the grocery store. There was more areas for a canoe to get into out in the pass with so much fish in the backwater bays and inlets along with so much wildlife being so close to the Everglades and the 10 thousand islands. Love watching your channel and all the crazy campers you get into. Happy trails and safe travels
