In this video, you can find 4 DIY deodorant recipes - a common one, a second one for sensitive skin (without baking soda), a third without coconut oil, and another one that’s a spray deodorant.
The recipes are natural, vegan, zero waste, and easy to make. The key ingredients that you will need to combat the bad smell & keep your armpits fresh are:
Coconut oil: Antimicrobial properties that kill fungi, yeast, and bacteria, while hydrating your skin.
Arrowroot powder: Moisture and oil absorbent, with healing properties.
Baking soda: Odor-absorbing, neutralizing the smell of sweat. Not the best for very sensitive skin.
Shea butter: Antibacterial properties, moisturizing, and helps to reduce inflammation.
Bentonite clay: It has highly adsorptive properties. It can absorb odors, oils, bacteria, and acts as a physical protective action on the skin.
Ethanol alcohol: Effectively kills bacterias & germs and keeps bad odor away. It can be quite drying for sensitive skin, so keep that in mind.
Apple cider vinegar: Naturally kills bacteria & non-toxic.
Essential oils: Antibacterial properties while adding a fresh scent. Use only high quality, natural & therapeutic grade.
Find a list with essential oils, perfect for the DIY recipes & additional tips here: www.almostzerowaste.com/diy-d...

Hey friends! Which of these deodorants will you do first? 🙂

thanks for the recipe. I want to make the 2nd deo, can I omit the shea butter? Can I also replace the arrowroot powder with tapioca starch? Arrowroot is not accessible in my country. Will appreciate your reply 😊. Thanks

@@preciousblanza7770 Hey! You are welcome 🙂 I am currently using the 2nd one, and I love it. I noticed though that if it is super hot (currently it's summer here), I need to re-apply once or twice, so I don't get stinky. I probably wouldn't recommend omitting the shea butter. It is more solid than coconut oil, and it keeps the deodorant firm, without melting. However, if you really can't find shea butter anywhere, use mango butter instead. It will keep the deodorant more solid, and it is a good substitute for shea butter. You can use cornstarch or tapioca starch instead of arrowroot. I hope that helps, and let me know if you have other questions 🙂

I have very sensitive skin and have been looking for a more sustainable alternative for my deodorant for a while now. I tried the third recipe (without coconut oil) and it’s my favorite deodorant ever! It’s SO easy to make and it feels super nice on my skin, besides I have no smell at all after the whole day just applying it after my morning shower, no stains on my clothes or anything! Highly recommend this one if you have sensitive skin 🥰

First deodorant I tried had baking soda. It really burned my armpits. I made #2 and #3, and #2 is my favorite! It absorbs great and doesn’t leave oil stains on my clothing!! I used tea tree oil in this and love the smell! #3 absorbs well also, but takes a tiny bit longer to melt. It took two weeks for my pits to get used to natural deodorant. Thank you for these amazing recipes😘

The acid in the apple cider vinegar helps change surface skin ph and kills or makes it more difficult for bacteria to propagate. You might try lemon juice or other acidic fruit. Not sure if lemon will be sticky or not… lemon is little less acidic also so not sure if it’s as good but probably worth a try. Plus the benefit of the lemon smell.

Did it burn your armpit?
@AlmostZeroWaste
@AlmostZeroWaste 2 года назад
@@swisdom9117 Did it burn yours? If that happens it is almost 100% certainly the baking soda... it can be really uncomfortable if your skin is too sensitive (OR if you just shaved! My skin doesn't react badly to baking soda, but I do get a burning sensation & red skin after I shave and then add the deodorant).
@swisdom9117
@swisdom9117 2 года назад
@@AlmostZeroWaste I haven't gotten a deo burn in a long time since I have it in a roll up tube. I used beeswax to hold my deo together but after a short time it was like the wax was sticking to my skin even though I showered, and it caused a weird odor. Now I just use a little bit of coconut oil in my cornstarch baking soda solution, put it in the fridge and let it harden. When the deodorant comes back to room temp it is a bit watery but better than applying it with my finger or popsicle stick. Baking soda burns are not fun at all

Hehe, awesome! I liked that's simple to make, but next time I will try to improve the recipe. If you are worried about the vinegar odor, you can try to eliminate 100% of the smell by using distilled white vinegar (instead of apple cider vinegar), and a bit of distilled/spring water. Also, add some of the following essential oils that can eliminate the vinegary smell: lemon essential oil, lavender essential oil and tea tree essential oil. Good luck! 💕

@AlmostZeroWaste
@AlmostZeroWaste 3 года назад
Hi there! Thank you so much, I'm glad the video is useful :) I don't use rubbing alcohol, because when doing these deodorants, I researched a lot about it and I found that it can be too irritative to the skin, eyes, mucous membranes, and upper respiratory tract. Furthermore, you can for sure use white vinegar. I actually prefer using distilled white vinegar, for a less vinegary smell. As for the lemon - I have a friend that uses squeezed lemon juice on her armpits, and it works great. If you decide to use lemon, just be careful and don't expose the armpits under direct sunlight, as it can cause your skin to burn. I hope that helps. Let me know if there is anything else! :)

@AlmostZeroWaste 2 года назад
Hi! If it is very, very hot, I suggest keeping them in the refrigerator. (maybe not the 3rd DIY deodorant, because it has a lot of shea butter, which stays solid in hot temperatures, but if you see it starts melting, you can keep it in the fridge, too)
@AiceLahora
@AiceLahora 3 года назад
how would you know this deo is expired? I mean for how long it will last without a refrigerator. I live in tropical country.
@AlmostZeroWaste
@AlmostZeroWaste 3 года назад
Technically, this deodorant can last you a very long time. You can see the expiration date on each ingredient that you use, and calculate an approximate expiration date. You don't need to keep the deodorant in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life. But if it's very hot where you live, then it might melt (especially the first and the second one). If that's your case, then you can keep it in the fridge, to simply keep the deodorant solid. :))

I tried recipe #2 and the shea butter i got off amazon STINKS! It was a heavy yellow color, where yours is light cream or white color. Should shea butter have an odor? It was very much like a clay consistency.
@AlmostZeroWaste
@AlmostZeroWaste Год назад
Yellow shea butter is essentially how shea butter is produced in its raw state, with no refining taking place. White shea butter is made as a result of refining yellow shea butter and is extracted using heat to remove impurities. The raw shea sometimes has a smokey/burned smell, but it is normal.

@Soakedmelody
@Soakedmelody 2 года назад
I made the first basic one but my deo is a bit grainy. Why is that?
@AlmostZeroWaste
@AlmostZeroWaste 2 года назад
It could be because of the shea butter; that's the reason why I prefer using refined shea butter because there is no grainy feeling in the end product. Also, a grainy feel can occur depending on how the deodorant hardens. When the temperature cools down too slowly, it can create a bumpy or grainy texture. To make it smooth again, add a bit of water in a saucepan, and put it on low heat. Once the water gets hot enough, add the jar with deodorant inside, and stir the mixture for a few minutes, until it melts. Don't boil the water - it just needs to get hot. Remove the deodorant from the saucepan once melted, and place it in the fridge for 30-40 minutes until set and smooth. Let me know if this helped, or if you have any questions!

For the 3rd recipe can we usee cocoa butter instead of shea butter?
@AlmostZeroWaste
@AlmostZeroWaste 2 года назад
Hmm, if you want a substitute for the shea, cocoa butter isn't the best option. I would recommend using mango butter as a substitute for the shea.

Doesnt alcohol dry out the skin way to much to be used in deodorant ? 50% alcohol even just for 2 tbs sounds way to strong ?
@AlmostZeroWaste
@AlmostZeroWaste 2 года назад
Hi! For me, 2 tbsp wasn't strong but if you feel it might be for you, you can use only 1 tbsp. :)

Perhaps you can try adding witch hazel instead. However, I have never tried it, so I don't know how it will work.

Only if it's really really hot where you live (it might melt). Otherwise, it isn't necessary. For example, I currently live in central Europe and it gets very hot during the summer, but I don't put any of the deodorants in the fridge after use.

Hi, can i skip the Shea butter or does it really make a different when it comes to absorbing the sweat that comes from nervisoutit :( ? its my first time making deo and i cant wait to try it :) ive been suffering in 15 years from bad odor and excessive sweating especially when i get nervous etc so for me it would be a miracle to get rid of this problem and have a normal life and be able to wear nice colors beside black and not worry about huge stains and very bad odor that my body naturally produce :((( I just got my organic 50g arrow root and coconut oil and lavender oil.. is that enough or should i go add baking soda as well as first try ? I tried baking soda alon direct on the armpit and applied my boss deo stick and it worked great first day but second day started to sweat as usual so i guess my body adapt fast which make me scarred this diy deo would not work out for me after all :((
@hankrojo7731
@hankrojo7731 2 года назад
It is not an antiperspirant , so you will sweat but there should not be any bad body odor You would want to sweat so your body can rid itself of impurities. The baking soda will neutralize the odor and help absorb some sweat. It does feel gritty when you apply.

arrowroot is oil absorbent (so it makes the deodorant less oily) and a good thickening agent :) you can substitute it with cornstarch, too
