What I learned myself is that the planing phase can be boring compared to animating but through time you will enjoy the process of studying and planing before you animate 😉

Ah that changes over time Abdi, you learn to truly appreciate planning and it becomes the fun part of the animation. The possibilities are endless at that point and therefore is incredibly exciting.

What a lot of people space out is how much CONSCIOUS effort it takes to create animations.. but people also overestimate what that means. When you’re forming something even as simple as a circle, you need to make sure as you’re flipping through the frames.. the energy you want is coming through as you feel is right. That means noticing and asking yourself the feeling you want EACH part to feel. Eventually, it becomes natural as your critical eye develops.. but for now, while you’re a novice, you need to really make sure when your adding strokes that they’re marks that matter and not just random lines that hold no value. For example, if you’re drawing the shoulder.. really ask yourself what you need to change to make it look like a good shoulder! And you should be asking yourself constantly.

Very well said Echo. Couldn’t agree more, it’s underrated how much work, effort and concentration is required to animate. And most important to get to the point where you can do it effortlessly. Thanks a lot for adding to the conversation and thanks for watching. Keep in touch.

Hey Harvey your workflow is pretty similar to mine! I tend to sketch most my ideas before jumping into Maya and that serves well for gameplay because I am just focused on strong posing. Thanks for the great vids man keep on keepin on!

Hey Benny. Ah it sounds like you are doing things the right way. ;) It very useful to squeeze as much creativity out of your shoots as possible.

Do you know which person in a studio is responsible for all the planning and thinking? Like, figuring out how to portray a story within a setting, figuring out how that setting itself will look and how the characters emotions will be protrayed in the shots, the composition of the shots etc. Is there a "job" that does this?
@harveynewman
@harveynewman Год назад
Hey Poppi, good question, so yeah so that's going to be mostly on the overall Director, but depending on the size of the team he would then use the help of an Animation Director, Compositor and more in order to further flesh out the top down view. I hope that makes sense
@poppi3362
@poppi3362 Год назад
@@harveynewman Interesting, what is the difference between an animation director and and overall director? And how would one get into such a position? It feels like something you kind of stumble into or work your way up. Or is there something like an assisting director?

Great video Harvey, thank you! If you don’t mind me asking, just wanna double check something with you please? If I am animating a shot for a cinematic (not video game gameplay) and I know the exact shot (like you did with the over the shoulder axe throw), It’s fine to just ‘animate’ and make it work just for that angle right? So if I know that is 100% the shot and angle they are gonna use, then if I break the model etc/weird poses, as long as it works and looks good for that angle, this is cool right? I am sure it is, as I have seen many behind the scenes of animators doing this. Plus it saves time, as if I know I am not seeing the feet or the face of my character then no need to animate it. Of course I know for gameplay it has to work for 360º, but for cinematic, it’s ok to cheat right?
@harveynewman
@harveynewman 25 дней назад
Hey Monk, absolutely...you should see cinematics for games just like film or VFX. The same planning and pipeline applies, the only difference is that those videos are rendered our and added to the game or they will get added to engine via sequencer in Unreal. I hope that helps
@ukmonk
@ukmonk 25 дней назад
@@harveynewman Thanks Harvey, I mean though its ok to 'break' the model/rig right if it looks good for that angle. This is not frowned upon? Sometimes I might have to stretch the arms to look good in the camera view but from profile it would look terrible but great from the behind shot for eg?
@harveynewman
@harveynewman 25 дней назад
@@ukmonk Not at all as long as it looks good to camera and you are sure the part that is broken is not going to be tweaked later on, then it should be good to go. Pixar has many behind the scenes where they showcase their final shot versus behind the scenes and most of the time the legs are doing something crazy as they are focused on what goes on camera. ;)

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. Yeah I saw loads of videos where they do this in all the big studios and I guess as long as it works and looks good on camera and like you said, make sure you reset the broken bits so doesn’t mess you up later. I have worked in film/TV for over 32 years and we always ‘cheat shots’ so I guess animation is no different. Thanks for all the great content Harvey!

Would this video also apply to 2d animation, I personally animate on 2 d softwares not 3d, so I’m not sure if this process would work for both?
@harveynewman
@harveynewman Год назад
Absolutely, it will apply Todd 2D as well. That’s the beauty of planning, if you do it well it really doesn’t matter what medium you use to animate. Best of luck in your animation journey.

Hey Harvey, good and inspiring as always. I totally agree with you about planning but, maybe it's just my experience, in the industry (gaming) quite often there is no time for proper preplanning and we're developing ideas "on fly". In my case rough blocking in maya could be first step. Maybe some video reference might help but I had really rare chance to elaborate all aspects of animation before I have to done that. Do you have that kind of experience and how you act out in that case? Of course, out of work we don't have deadlines and planning is really enjoying part of game. Best Regards
@harveynewman
@harveynewman 2 года назад
Hey Boba...you are completely right. Most places I worked there's no time to plan properly. However as you become a more experienced animator you realise that you know more or less how long the animation is going to take and you can start taking into account the planning as part of your time you need to schedule for your shot.
@Boba3d
@Boba3d 2 года назад
@@harveynewman That's true. Each new shot brings more experience and makes animator more confident.

First point is hard! haha I usually jump into maya on day 1
@harveynewman
@harveynewman 2 года назад
Yeah I was the same for years. But if you think about it in sports terms a basketball player spends 100's of hours planning and training for the one game. Animation is the same the more planning you do the better the end result. Hope that makes sense.
@TheBLACKX72
@TheBLACKX72 2 года назад
@@harveynewman Yeah that does make sense. The reason why I jump straight in is because I love improvising and adding things up as I go. Not that I skip the pre production part, I just dont do it in order, so I may start posing first, look for a specefic reference, go back knto maya and so forth. Im still a student so I have to fix that up before I start working haha.
