1. Not always a sign of bad luck
Black cats have long been considered
a symbol of bad luck and the devil.
This is because around the 13th century,
Pope Gregory IX of Rome described the black cat as Satan’s servant.
However, in some countries such as Scotland, England, and Ireland,
black cats were a symbol of good luck.
For instance, it was believed that
a black cat approaching the front door or the doorway
would bring money and good luck,
and sailors even took black cats on board
believing they would guarantee safe voyages.
2. Personality and characteristics of black cats
Since cats are nocturnal animals that are active at night,
cats with black fur are more likely to survive in the wild
than cats with white fur.
This is because black cats are not as noticeable
compared to white cats,
so they can better hide from predators or prey.
Because of these advantages,
black cats tend to adapt quickly in any environment
and often have a friendly personality.
3. Do not get sick easily
According to the research on the genes of black cats
conducted by the US National Institutes of Health,
black cats are more resistant to diseases than other cats.
The gene in charge of blackening the fur
also strengthens the cat’s immune system.
As such, black cats are
especially immune to
the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).
4. Change in fur color
Black cats’ fur color sometimes gets darker or changes completely.
In addition to the fur becoming lighter as they age,
black fur can turn into a brownish color
if the cats get a lot of sunlight on a daily basis.
Cats’ fur color is determined by melanin,
and the higher the melanin production,
the darker the fur color.
In particular, the more protein cats eat from early childhood,
the darker their fur color.
This is because protein contains
a lot of amino acids that produce melanin.
