Today I had a chance to visit four obscure parks here in Whittier, California. These are four parks that normally don't get a lot of attention. These parks are small and off of the beaten path. I thought it would be fun to shine a light on a few of these great parks.

I love how much you love Whittier, our beautiful hometown. I am actually a bit jealous that you thought of highlighting Whittier on all of your social media, your podcast and blog. You are doing a great job and I wish I had your creativity, discipline and gumption. I was born in Whittier in 1969 and I’ve always bragged that I knew the most about Whittier and loved it the most but you win!!! Maybe we can talk one day! Keep up the GREAT work

My uncle lived across the street from John Green-leaf park and one of my buddy's ex girlfriend lived the houses next to the park . You might want to check Broadway park on Broadway between Milton and Comstock it's has 2 sides one side is tennis court, bath rooms and horse shoes and it had at one time shuffleboard. I don't know if the shuffleboard is still there. then the other side had swings , merry go round, stage and Girl scout house.

The John Greenleaf one used to be a Pepsi branded playpark. Many debaucherous moments in each park back in the 90s

When I grew up in East Whittier Parnell Park had a small rodeo arena attached to it and the petting zoo with a donkey that lived there for years, when the donkey passed away decades later the local Whittier newspaper even printed an obituary article about it. Very saddened to see this park become a homeless encampment. I grew up on hillgate Dr at the corner of Santa Gertrudes where there was once a horse barn and old house which belonged to Mr and Mrs Stevens. Mr Stevens was the last foreman of the Leffingwell Rancho. He was allowed to purchase land from the owners before they sold off the remaining property. He owned five acres around Creek Park. Him and his wife were living there as far back as the 1920s when he first started working on the Leffingwell citrus orchards and by the 1960s they sold their land to house developers and had their barn relocated closer to their house. They would tell us stories that were told to them, the famous story and our favorite was the horse thief who was lynched in the back of Creek Park just behind the home depot before the creek runs under imperial highway, we thought it was so cool having a hanging tree in our neighborhood even though we didn't know which one it was and that's how that part of Creek Park became known as Dead Man's Trail. Originally imperial highway was named Kings highway back when the stage coach ran through east Whittier towards Brea and Fullerton. You can find old photos of the Leffingwell Rancho and the Stevens barn on Pinterest, just look up an account under the name of the Los Angeles Historical Society.

Back in my St. Mary's days, around 1991-1992 timeframe in 7th grade we used to have our flag football practice at Greenleaf Park. It was hardly a park back then just open grass with none of the playground equipment that's there now. As in matter of fact we called it J.G. Field back then.

If ANYBODY has pictures of Anaconda and Parnell's Storybook Zoo circa 1960's I'd love to see them posted somewhere. I think Anaconda was the one that had the 1950's style rocketship and two 'spring' mounted riding animals. Parnell I vagely recall having a Hickory Dickory Dock clock-shaped pen with live mice and other animals. There was another park that featured huge cement statues that the school took us to. I remember making it my life's mission to find and climb to the top each and every one....even if some rotten boys were trying to hit me with live snails from the lake. (Luckily, the had terrible aim and I was used to snails from our backyard.) Thank you for posting this. I've been going through old family photos of my home town and was getting too nostalgic not to try looking things up.

I had vague memories of Anaconda Park being built when I was a kid. I just checked and found that it was built in '84. I think that Gunn Park had a three level rocketship with internal ladders to climb to the top. Parnell Park definitely had a Hickory Dickory Dock mouse cage in the petting zoo. I always wanted to visit the uptown park that had the goldfish pond. I never knew the name when I was a kid, but google says that it is Central Park.

This is hilarious how this is RU-vid content. These have been around forever and definitely had walking field trips to these parks growing up in the Whittier School District.
@MyWhittierTV
@MyWhittierTV Год назад
This is RU-vid content because there are people who are thinking of moving here. There are people who just moved here and are trying to get a layout of the land. Some people moved many years ago and want to see what it looks like now. Some people live here but live in other areas of town snd have never seen these parks. Some people watch from other states and have an interest. Just a few reasons why this is relevant content.
