Here's a question I'd love to see a video on. Traditional water softeners use salt or potassium chloride (ion exchange water softening), but some of us use saltless water conditioners. Saltless water conditioners like Kind (previously Evo), Aquasana, and Springwell, use Template Assisted Crystallization (TAP) to reduce scale formation by up to 90%, and can, over time, help to remove existing scale. But although TAP-conditioned water doesn't remove iron, it does remove calcium, magnesium, and some other minerals. What happens, I believe, is that the TAP filter acts as a catalyst to crystalize the latter minerals, so they won't adhere to plumbing surfaces. What water maintenance adjustments need to be made to the water chemistry of TAP-conditioned water? What's the long-term impact on my hot tub from using ion exchange softening vs. TAP?
Is your water TAP-conditioned when it enters your house? I wonder if you would have filter issues (or need to clean your filters more often). And do you have metals in the water or is that not a problem? You may need a metal sequestrant if you're noticing metal issues that TAP-conditioned water doesn't treat.
It's TAP-conditioned in the garage where the water enters the home, so our backyard hose is conditioned water. Metals aren't a problem. But since calcium hardness serves to stabilize the pH and TA levels in the hot tub, and helps to prevent corrosion, is the TAP-conditioned water removing or modifying the calcium in a way that affects the overall hot tub's water chemistry. In other words, does TAP-conditioned water change the way the calcium in my water interacts with other chemicals and surfaces; - for instance, is calcium in TAP-conditioned water more "chemically inert?" Am I getting the same level of corrosion protection from the calcium in TAP-conditioned water, and if so, do I need to add, or add more calcium booster to compensate for this? And if unmodified calcium needs to be added to compensate for the modified calcium in TAP-conditioned water, are there any test strips designed specifically for the chemistry of TAP-conditioned water? @@SwimUniversity
