Here is a problem that I see on for glory People always using recoveries that make them go into free fall If you're in free fall above the stage then you're basically saying "hey! PUNISH ME!!!"
+Pitch Ender I know, but characters like Ness, Lucas, Falco, Fox, Robin etc. can only recover like that, the problem is that they use them to recover onto the stage, and that's reaaally bad and punishable, they need to always aim at the ledge.
+Pitch Ender If I see people recovering low I just water gun them up and messing their recovery up with greninja :P Its an instant kill on marth and some other characters with bad movement speed after their recovery.
I think I'm a roller. Cuz I tend to roll a lot to avoid attacks. And I also have this problem with air dodging. It doesn't always work for me cuz sometimes I will still get it.
I know i'm at least an average player, but I get discouraged easily, and call myself garbage a lot. I'm trying to work on that, but I can't change the way my brain works just like that...
I'm really feeling u. I feel I'm not playing smash how I'm supposed to. I have really bad timing on moves and for some reason I can't seem to land any hits easily. Smash as a game is hard it's not just certain characters. When they say easiest character they only mean closest to easy.
Best way to learn is just practice. I used to air dodge every time I was thrown because it seemed like a good option but is very punishable when read. Also, play real people. For glory is not good for getting better at smash, it's best to play real people and attend real tournaments, not the online ones, because that's where you really learn things
I used to do that too. You just have to tell yourself not to think that way. Obviously, you seem to be aware that you are at least decent, so use that as your motivation. Any matches where you feel like you are hitting a mindblock is an opportunity to learn how to adapt to that situation. It's hard not to get frustrated and discouraged when you're being dominated by someone, but if you can keep on your guard and be a little more observant you can learn to be a better player and at the same deal with those stressful situations productively.
One other really big mistake is playing the same character constantly. I know the defense to this, which is that playing the same character will allow you to master them, and although that's true, I've found that people who only really know one character can't fight well against the others. When you go against friends or even online, play a few random matches. Play around with the roster. You might even find a character you didn't expect to like! The more characters you play, the more you know and can anticipate their strategies when you fight against them. Often times I'll start with a good all-around like Pikachu and my opponent will do well against me, but then I'll switch to Duck Hunt and they have no idea how to defend against the can while I'm attacking them. If you don't know how to fight with a character, odds are you won't be able to fight that well against it. Playing other characters also makes you think about your main differently. This one strategy worked with this character, so maybe it will work with my main too. This one character uses projectiles optimally like this, so maybe I can apply that to my main. That sort of thing. Don't be a one-trick pony, because one-trick ponies don't fair well against experts. Know your roster.
+JoshSaysStuff yes when i started to play PM i only ever played kirby. eventually after having the win loss rate of a parent trying to face their child in a game decide to test out new characters eventually starting to main ivysaur who i thought i would never play
+JoshSaysStuff I don't have a main because I think limiting yourself to one characters perspective is bad, for all the reasons you stated. I think about it in terms of which characters I'm best with, and intuitively get. Right now its Cap, Marth, Jiggs, Peach, ROB, and Charizard. I've started playing pac-man as well because he's so darn fun.
spracketskooch i think of mains as the character you go to if you want to win. they are your A-game i found that me and my friends just play with random chosen then explore that character. lately b/c i want to fight in tournaments i started to play as common high tiers to get used to them and low tiers to get better to possibly use them as a wildcard against players who are better than me
nicholas islam Indeed, it's like the character you are forced to play to win. Man I live in Wyoming it's just me and my one friend playing against each other or having to go online for teams. I wish there were tourneys nearby so I could improve and see which characters I play are viable within the tourney scene.
Kinda how when I picked up Smash on Day 1 I played Olimar for the first two weeks then switched to Little Mac, Toon Link, Game and Watch, Dedede and Diddy Kong. I play like maybe half of the roster. Mario, Luigi, ZSS, Link, Toon Link, Sheik, Rosalina, Olimar, Villager, Marth/Lucina, Robin, Ike, Roy, Ness, Lucas, Pikachu, Greninja, Lucario, Little Mac, Wario, Shulk, Mega Man, Kirby, Meta Knight, Dedede, Pac-Man, Sonic, Diddy, Doctor Mario, Duck Hunt, Pit/Dark Pit, Fox, Falco, R.O.B, and Wii Fit Trainer are all the characters I can play at least an average or higher level, but since I can't and won't always play as them all I get really stale with characters like Duck Hunt and Pit who aren't really relevant. But I will always be an Olimar main.
MisterMarioKart K thanks I'm learning him and I'm so addicted to him the funny thing is I used to hate him but I'm learning him because I have trouble fighting him and he ended up being so fun
+MasterMewtwo lol wut falcon has one of the best neutrals in the game with a broken dash grab safe jab and several safe aerials like nair uair and bair along with a command grab and fast running speed. if ur not approaching with falcon ur prolly doin it wrong. just tryin to help no h8 m8 -Zen
Mind if I ask to add you then? I only own the WiiU version [thinking of getting the 3DS to play on the go] add me; my ID is: NewFoundAbility I also would want to Skype if possible. :/
I like all the points you made! I love smash4 and want people to get better so I'm gonna leave a few tips of my own to hopefully help people out there! -Instead of rolling, look up dash trotting/fox trotting. One of the reasons rolling is so easy to punish (in my opinion) is because it has a set distance and you don't have many options after you roll. I use pivot grabs, pivot tilts, or just make a f-smash read to punish. Dash trotting is different. Its the smash4 version of dash dancing. It can bait your opponent to dash attack, dash grab, smash move, etc and make punishing it very easy -Instead of spamming air dodge, jump out of combos. It allows more options on landing and makes your opponent have to predict a lot more. Baiting an air dodge, once you play the game for a bit, is very easy. -Counters. I see a lot of people spam this as well, and for high level players it is easy to punish. All you have to do is grab or wait for the animation to be over for a harder punish. Definitely don't counter if the other player has a kill throw (Ness's back throw, Mewtwo's up throw, etc.) It is okay to throw them sometimes, but rarely is it a good idea if you're playing a high level match. -Power shielding/perfect shielding. You wanna stop projectile spammers, just learn it. There is an end animation to a lot of projectiles where your opponent is open to an attack. Power shield them and punish. I got better at this game by going on For Glory and getting my ass kicked. I used to roll all the time and do very predictable moves that would let me get badly punished. If I found someone that I could easily beat, I left. If I found someone that would kick my ass, I tried to play them as much as possible, find out what I was doing wrong, and make adjustments. My For Glory record is garbage, but I got better. If I can do it, I know you guys can too!
I once face a Spamus who rolled 63 times. All he did was roll from one side of the stage to the other, and it seems I'm always playing Ganon when facing against them. Putting myself at an unintended handicap.
This helped me out a lot. Especially the last one regarding combos. I main Dark Pit and two combos I often do are Back Throw + Neutral B and Down Throw + Side Air.
For some reason, when I play with these bad players who follow the same pattern over and over, I just can't adapt and punish. Overall if it is a roy or ike. Idk, I predict what they're gonna do, but my inputs aren't precise enough, or I'm not used to fg lag, or I'm plainly bad at the game. but they always have time to shield or roll or even atttack before I hit them.
Yeah, the high horse thing REALLY pisses me off. I'm a humble guy, I think I'm great at this game, but I know when I'm at at disadvantage. My friends always assume that they have a right to be considered better just because they know all these new fangled competitive techs and what not. Almost all of my combos and strategies are things that I have found on my own, what they seem to call experimenting with new and original combos being "bad", then I hope you enjoy getting read a lot when we go to tournaments. If I can win without even spending most of their weekend watching tech or combo videos, criticizing the mains of other people, or just blaming a character and saying they need nerfs, I think it's clear that some people need to focus on out of game skills like sportsmanship. Inb4 they find this comment and focus on me in every match like always.
Thanks for this! I've been trying to get better for a while, but for glory hasn't been doing it for me. I'll try out these tips and see how it goes. love your videos btw.
The overusing combos is DEFINITELY something I find useful. I already toned down the rolling, and I know I'm at a modest level, but combos are something I usually get to consistent with. Thanks for the vids, bro!
Yeah, that's what I meant. I don't know why I worded it that way, but I meant I end up using the same combo setups, so I found the tip not to do that useful. I'll try to be more clear from here on. x)
i have a buddy who plays diddy kong and he plays like this, down b down b throw banana at me dash attack dash attack off side of stage jump up b, he thinks he's pro and i told him to do other things than 3 moves, and got offended and was like that's how u play him if u don't like it then git gud, nd im like betch the fuck u say, i just fart on him with wario then he gets butt hurt
I'm glad there are those who see the potential out there, I'll be honest... I hit a low patch not too long ago, getting discouraged from fights but this vid has helped me get into a different frame of mind so I'm gonna give it my best.
another key mistake is picking top tier characters expecting that they will do top tier things with them. It just ends up making them get bodied because thats not their playstyle
Okay so, I have a story to tell, so listen good. Once i was playing smash with my friends, and I'm a Shulk main, and the perfect conditions appeared right in front of me. My three friends were all fighting in the middle of the stage, pretty close together. I was on the edge of the stage, selecting a Monado art. I picked smash, and they were all at high damage. And when i noticed how close together they were, there was one thought in my mind. "up B." And it worked like a charm, they all went flying, and there were no survivors. It was the best thing i have ever done, and i doubt i will do anything like it again.
Thanks for these tips. I'm trying to get better at Smash but i always thought that rolling was the best option. Looks like i need to change the way i play then.
i appreciate that you put this up considering that smash4 is a new competitive smash game to get good at and therefore has drawn a large audience that hasnt played competitive fighting games before. i wish there were more videos like this for all of the smash games since this advice can be useful for all the smash games but facts like "rolling in smash4 is good but shouldnt be one's only way of avoid attacks" is only true for smash4 whereas other smash games, rolling is plain bad and should be used very sparingly.
When I first met some friends of mine I lost awfully in brawl and almost stopped playing smash all together but I turned myself around and now I continue to better myself I might try to roll less thanks for the tips
Another Key mistake: trying to punish ANY move that the opponent does. That happens to people who are only used to play defensively, specially those who camp, most tilt attacks have low lag, or Roy's neutral B for example, so they are a bit deceiving sometimes, and sure, it's fine if you fall for it sometimes but there's people who just don't see it because they only thing they know is to "punish".
5:25. "a lot of the time some combo moves that are true combos can be gotten out of" It's called a true combo BECAUSE it's TRUE meaning you can't get out of it. Other than that it was a good video.
I'll be honest, I'm trying to get out of the habit of rolling all the time. I've got in the habit simply because that's what the level 9 computers do. It tends to work against them as well, and having only computers to fight 80% of the time shaped my playstyle in the worst way. That's why I'm watching these sorts of videos now. Thank you for pointing these things out!
Sooooo many woooordssss. 1. Don't spam rolls. 2. Battle diverse players. 3. Don't don't self loathe or be cocky. 4. Be adaptable and mix up combos. Also, there are actually good players on For Glory, you just gotta know when to play. The difference in player skill at 2 P.M. compared to 2 A.M. is usually huge for me. Not saying good players are only on then, but there seem to be a lot more. Finally, Anther's ladder is a step up from For Glory in skill, and if you think you're getting pretty good, you should try it. I just started using it and it definitely is a good experience.
I think that in terms of using combos, it's best to mix up what sort of combos will work best at lower percents, and then later on mix into a setup that'll most likely KO your opponent. People should always use one particular combo setup b/c they may not always work on higher percentages and it'll make them readable to the opponent as well
> Talks about overused combos like d-throw and follow ups > Suggests following d-throw with different attacks How about just *don't* d-throw and attack in an unusual for some characters? I play Mario and I *never* d-throw, and I've caught many off-guard.
My first tournament I went to I ended up against Bladewise as my very first tourney opponent. He of course destroyed me, and after that I went on a long hiatus, until I found out he is a top level player and now it's my mission to face him again some day and win
Low-level players always use the same combos? Allow me to direct you toward the Wii U Doubles tournament at The Big House 5 a few days ago. Abodongo, one of the best Smash 4 players in the world, played Meta Knight in the doubles tournament. Almost every one of his KO's was achieved with the same u-air to u-air to u-air to Shuttle Loop combo, often killing his opponents off the top at crazy low percentages like 65%. This combo worked incredibly well, and he used it to get all the way to the Doubles Grand Finals. Anything he did that wasn't that combo was either a defensive strategy or a setup for that combo. So yes, low-level players do tend to use the same combos over and over. But sometimes the pros do that too. Sakurai plz nerf Meta Knight k thx.
Nerf MK in Sm4sh!?!?!?!? If it was Brawl yes but why in Sm4sh for. MK struggles to get the kill when his opponents get to high percents and if Up-B misses, he can massively punished. MK at best is a Low/Mid High Tier. Those Up-Airs into Up-B killing as early as 65% are what keep him as a high tier so far.
The last one was the only one I applied to. In Brawl I played as Ness and used Psi Fire and kicked afterwards. Soon, everyone learned how to dodge it. I soon was able to get better while learning how to and when to do moves.
Right now I have literally no clue where I could even consider myself. I don't want to give up & I know this, but I'm so inconsistent. I go to tournaments every week & some weeks I do alright & get like 17th other weeks I go 0-2 & just dip. This video helps a bit, but ultimately I do know I need to play more.
I came in fully expecting "Nooby mistake #1: Don't pick Little Mac!" I'm glad to see I was wrong in my assumption. Also, I make a lot of these mistakes, but they never really bug me to be honest. Never personally wanted to get "pro good", I'm perfectly happy with "casual good".
I LOVE sparring in pretty much any game and omg did I learn a lot. I'm quite casual nowadays when it comes to gaming but when I get stomped by a better player in a game I will fight him as much and as often as I can because you learn best from your mistakes. You don't even have to win against them, you WILL notice the smallest improvements and those are what keep you going.
Smash bros is like chess, play to learn and have fun. Limit the game to options like you would in Go, or chess. Learn from what is already invented and create more. This is why new players can pick up the game fast, because they know everything that's been discovered already. It also depends on the type of learner you are; for example Nairo learns from playing level 9 cpu's and improves off of that alone. However everyone doesn't learn like Nairo. For example, I learn from playing chess, go, doing math, and other activities that add to my meta. I apply everything in life to help me in *SOMETHING* improvise and improve. If you lose to someone, study their player habits. Last example: I know how to play against players like FOW, Craftis, Marss, and Fatal because I've played them before and watch their videos a lot and learn ALL OF THEIR HABITS. PS: I got bodied by FOW lol PPS: Zero started off in this game Good XD and so did M2k, FOW, Tyrant, Ally, Nakat, False, and Nairo. *ADJUST TO YOUR OPPONENT*
I've been playing Smash for a while, and I'm not half bad (I think), but I intend to use the things addressed in this video to improve even more! (So I can at least get rid of the "I think" after I say I'm decent at Smash.)
Well, I wouldn't say NEVER roll. Because it can (just don't make it stale) be really un punishable. It's best to know WHEN to roll rather than using it as your ONLY option. So it's really a mixup, not just to never do something 'nooby'. Unless it's Little Mac's neutral B because that move is literally shit.
Imo I think you forgot the "dangerous landing": when people do a double jump and then try to attack someone on the ground with a predictable aerial move, or just landing near to the opponent for no good reason
I do find myself rolling a lot, i think that, along with not short hopping is my biggest problem in smash. I try to mix up my combos because Mr. Game & Watch has some down throw options
What a great video. I won't lie; I'm not the best Smash player. I've played since the original and was always casual. I got a bit competitive in Melee and I skipped brawl. This new game I'm trying to be competitive. I'm the type who always placed myself on the lower pedestal and never boasted. I'd constantly loose, either through SDing or simply being outplayed. I did commit the sin of rolling too much and I see now why that is bad. It was combined with this and some rather unsavory players( who were complete jerks and were quite arrogant). Though, some of these genuinely good players and are my friends. Needless to say, I quit(combined with other obligations). However, I am willing to get back into the swing. I've decided to play Mario(after finally finding a character I like and am decent). So overall, thanks for the kind words. I'll play for the sake of fun and just try my best.
The reason I roll a lot is because I play as luigi, and when he runs and you try to stop he skids, like he's on ice, and if I try to attack while running I just do that annoying forward regular where he flails his arms.
>improving None of my friends neither some person in my local is even playing sm4sh, the nearest tournament is more than 62 km (~38 miles) away, as well as the nearest skilled player (95km, ~60miles). Also, my Internet connection is 5kbps at best so no online matches nor guides. Quitting is not an option * borg *
People inventing their own combos needs to happen more. I recently found out that Samus was one of the worst characters in the game so I started maining her to see if she could be used well. I then found out that down throw can combo into fair and up throw can combo into up air but it's really hard to land the grab.
Dash attack into U b works pretty well too. Also the first hit of jab into a grab is also good. Samus can't finish her whole jab so the opponent can shield it
I find myself rolling a lot, which I guess is bad, but I did run into a meta knight who kept cape-ing of my attacks and around me, and even after I learnt how he did it he kept on going and I decimated him :I
If you want people to stop rolling, stop telling them that it's very strong. For Glory is a shitty way of getting better. Don't play on For Glory thinking you're gonna get better. If you wanna get better, play in person. Doing the same combo repeatedly isn't bad if it's working. But if it didn't work and continues to not work and they are still trying the same combo, then that's when it's bad. Yes, everyone needs to learn to mix it up, but if the most punishing option keeps working because the opponent doesn't know how to react, then it's not bad to go for that combo that you're used to getting.
The visitor101 There are many reasons For Glory sucks. 1. You won't actually find the best people on For Glory. All of the best players play offline, even if it's just practicing things alone or doing testing. 2. For Glory has online delay. It doesn't matter how good the connection is. It will always have delay which negatively affects how well you're able to play bringing the ceiling down by an astronomical margin. 3. For Glory only uses omega stages. You'll never truly learn everything about a matchup if you never have platforms. It makes counter-picking pretty much useless even if it was allowed. Matchups change drastically when you introduce platforms with the only exceptions being mirror matches. 4. Pretty much the only thing you will get in for glory is diversity in your players. But, if you're only ever playing one round each with other players, it's hard to exercise any extensive adaptation. By the time you might figure out how to approach a certain matchup, the opponent changes (more often than not) and you're left with a blank slate. If you truly want to get better, find a group of people who play the game and meet up with them as often as you can. For Glory mode will not make you any better and certainly doesn't prepare you for any sort of offline play such as tournaments, smash fests, or just friendly get-togethers.
Thanks for this video. I've been trying to get into this game competitively and I've had that mindset of I am trash for a long time. Anyways thanks for the encouragement i guess i should say
Rolling has been my biggest mistake for the last week (i only just got smash 4), but that's because I started playing in Brawl and am still trying to get the hang of the 3ds controls
one problem I have with Battling Others online (With Smash Ladder or Anthers Ladder!) is that when I try and Battle friends, it always starts to Lag throughout the whole battle :/ For Glory works, but players get kinda boring...... Need to figure out how to get with Friends to work Better
The biggest mistakes I see making (and despite me being a pro, I call myself a semi-pro because of these mistakes.), is misinputting. For example, when trying to recover as dedede, sometimes I misinput and do side b instead causing my death.
Whats up with people thinking that Smash is a super complex fighter? Not only that, but why does almost every smash player i encounter act like it NEEDS to be played competitively? People play it for fun you know, and seriously, its not that hard to learn/get good.
I always get this damn spammers and i usually play with low tier characters so i can't do nothing about it, thats why i'm going to main cloud not only because he is higher tier but because is very fun to play as him.
I really only try to improve on training mode or against bots. Too scared to play online, because i'm scared of getting rekt and called a noob :( And it doesn't exactly help that my main is Little Mac.
Yaxion, just stay in the middle of the stage and try not to get baited or thrown further away from the middle of the stage, keep your distance, and you'll be fine.
