For anyone dealing with grief, depression, or any sort of mental health crisis: you don't have to face it alone. There are free resources that can help, such as the ones provided here by the National Institute of Mental Health: www.nimh.nih.gov/health/find-help If anyone else knows of other free mental health resources, please share them in the comments. Thank you, and much love to all of you.

God alone provides the meaning of life hence Victor Frankl's therapy called Logo therapy. To have mental health a person needs to be aligned with reality as it really is. Seeing this reality, terrible though it at first may be, we learn to accept it and acceptance brings peace. Through interior peace we are freed to love those who God places in front of us so we may love them. Thus we have mental health. Thank you for your lovely video.

@@ingridlinbohm7682 I promise that this is nothing personal but there is no God because if there was a God, either he has a warped sense of humour or quite simply there wouldn’t be so much pain, never ending pain. I’m happy for you that you have peace in your faith, even jealous but I’m sorry, there is no big sky daddy up there controlling everything because if there was there wouldn’t be so much pain.

I had heard of A Course in Miracles for decades, but never got around to starting it. What an amazing way to apply insights about the way our thinking leads us away from the undeniable reality of Love as our one & true being! ACIM leads you through practices that show how the ego mind traps us in thinking about the temporary or unreal as if it's actually solid & real. We actually know very little for certain, but this knowledge is kept away from us by the puffed up, know-it-all ego mind. I highly recommend ACIM's healing value.

That rules me out not that anybody can help anyway. You guys are almost 20,000 km away but one thing I really need to know, if your life’s painful and worthless, what’s so wrong with willingly donating healthy and viable organs so people who’re loved and valued by their family,friends and many others are able to live happy, healthy lives? Why are some lives wasted nothingness? Why can’t I leave the world a better place than when I entered it and leave some kind of positive legacy that counted for something by giving the ultimate gift and ending my own pain? - it just seems so unfair as they’re your organs so you should be able to do with them as you see fit.. Oh and no, I wouldn’t want to cent, I mean what’s the point as I’d be happily gone, pain over and at least 4 people get a shot at a normal life….and a medical university can have what’s left for the future medical students to study. If I was a dog I would’ve been humanely put down years ago. Honestly I can’t see what the problem is?😞💔

Dear miss sassy pants Everyone needs beliefs. Yours is that there is no god and you derive some comfort from that. Others believe there is a God and likewise derive their comfort from that. No words will sway the believers of either following. Some experience brought each to their accepted reality and only experiences will change or not change them. Meanwhile good people, whatever their belief, do good works, often side by side with their opposite. . Whatever your reason for being and surviving, i wish you continued kindness and fortitude , patience, and an open heart as you have shown in your text. Thank you. 🌿🔆🐝 🤙

This morning I got up, unwillingly, totally fedup with my 'meaninless' life of 87 years old woman. Then I came across of video about Frankl's life and his lessons. So I looked for another video about his teachings, and found yours. Now, after I have listened it, suddenly I feel a shame about my feeling so miserable. After all, there are so many blessings yet to leave.. and I'm really so fortunate to be still connected to my mind. I just have go on poking the embers to see a sparkle here and there.. To day you did that for me. Thank you so much

Personally I’ve read this book during high school but only now at my 40’s after reading it again I realized what an incredible book it is. The subtleties, especially regarding the meaningful moments Dr. Frankl mentions through the book were not noticed at the time while now I realized they are the essence of Frankl’s philosophy.

🥖 Looking at my own mind, I find it’s true that it is meaning which gives one strength. I hope that I can find meaning for the last season of my life. More work, I suppose; goals to be created and met. I have already lost my husband, my mother, and my extended family members. Perhaps inviting people in for a meal or meeting in a restaurant would help to be of use in the world. We all need more cheer.

Mary Jo 🙏🙏 I couldn't agree more 'as long as a person has a why to live there is always a way'- Nietzsche People try & shake my rock solid faith in Jesus. Why, I have no idea and it matters little. I have gained great peace in just breathing in a mantra 'Let go, let God'... some people just don't know any better. But for me I will always love & follow Jesus. And I am in the company of many smart, powerful, important, people who feel exactly the same. And that is good, hopeful & energizing. The book came to me like a magic. I bought it on Friday afternoon and on Sunday morning I could not get out of bed… I was in so much pain. I thought with the help of my chiropractor I will be fine soon and when it did not happen , not able to do anything else I picked up The Book. Finished reading it in 2-3 days… it talked to me. I became embarrassed of my level of despair. What it did for my soul…. Made the long process of physical suffering and disability free from mental anguish. Thank you for reminding me. @@lilybond6485 Lily, have you looked for a Pain Clinic? Some doctors can help you with chronic pain.
@lilybond6485
@lilybond6485 2 года назад
@Patricia Wright: I have been to a pain clinic, have been given medications that have some serious potential consequences, One being raising my already high blood pressure, possible stroke and heart attack. Lyrica is the absolute worst. I’ve gained weight on it putting more stress and pain in my joints. It makes me feel more depressed than my already severely depressed self. My heart is also doing intermittent flip flops. I want to be weaned off of it. The worst mistake I ever made in my life was telling a doctor many years ago that I had been through rehab for alcohol abuse -- over 30 years ago. I never took an illegal drug or abused prescription medications in my life. Whenever I had to take opiates for a surgery or when I broke my collarbone -- I never took more than the prescribed amount and always had some left over that sat in my cabinet for years. I also never felt mood altered by them. They have no appeal to me other than relieving pain and being able to give me some uninterrupted sleep which I am not getting at all. At this point I would settle for 1 Percocet every other night or every 3 nights just to get some uninterrupted sleep a few times a week. The rest of the time I will just endure the pain because I have no other options. The main reason for my pain is severe arthritis and nerve damage. Also I am quite educated about drugs and addiction having worked as an addictions therapist for 25 years.

🍞 Bought this book for my father when my mother died. He couldn't bear to read it at that time, so I did. The resilience of the human spirit is beyond our imagination. I am intimately familiar with feeling no meaning or purpose, and my saving grace was having faith that someday, I would find some joy again. No human being could help me in that mental state, despite going through a physician prescribed program and being off work for 3 months. For me, meaning is that my soul is something timeless and in this current human form, I am here to be a soundboard and Certified Massage Therapist for those who are suffering. Having experienced it so deeply myself, I can share my ears and hands to comfort those in the suffering state. This empathic work has given value and purpose to my own suffering and I am grateful to be a source for good to others.

i know what you mean by your feelings being inconsequential, but they’re not, as mine are not - even though thousands have born much worse. while others are having a much better life than i have as well. Frankel’s thoughts have meant as much to me as the therapist i finally found in my twenties, whom i saw on and off into my ‘60’s. i still am depressed and anxious, but deal with it - sometimes not very well, but i’m still here! your emotional existence has a much meaning for you as any other person’s. you just keep going. even a beam of light once in a while is worth it. keep safe :) 🌷🌱

Dr. Maté teaches about the connection between childhood trauma and adult suffering (including addiction). Eckhart teaches how to relate to pain by cultivating a practice of presence, which allows us to detach from the suffering caused by attachment to our old pain and stories. They are amazing resources for healing old pain. Your life has meaning, and I hope you have found much meaning in your life. I have been surprised by many things that have happened in my life- especially in the last decade. 13 years ago I was a registered nurse, owned 4 properties, had parents and siblings, was in excellent health, and I didn't worry much about my children. A lot has changed. It is amazing how different things are. I am quite a happy person still, but gee, things have changed. I hope you are in a much better situation, or that you are managing your challenges. I live in New Zealand, and I look up to the men who have served their countries, and am interested in their stories. Actually, all people's stories. We all have such different and interesting stories. I feel a kind of magnet in your comment.

My German father’s escape from a Soviet POW camp was orchestrated by the camp’s Jewish female physician. He had helped her mother by fixing her roof in exchange for 🍞 and in return she saved his life when he fell ill in camp and his future when she helped him escape. In her honour, I grew up to become a physician. I don’t know what her name was, yet by helping my father she profoundly affected the life of his progeny. I can only hope that I have done her memory justice. I wish I at least knew her name, but more importantly I continue to know her kindness with each day I live and work.

I always went the same way, but some reason I decided to go around the front, instead of the back. I read Dr. Frankl's book in 1980 at a time when I found no meaning at all, an emptiness in my life that nothing could fill. I found great healing and meaning in birds. How they could still sing in -20 below zero weather in the mountains, outside my window ~ they gave me hope and I started to feed them, to help them, and soon I had hundreds outside my window, and being among them was exhilarating, healing, and just the simple act of giving them seeds and water and 🍞was peace. They still sing to me on my farm, I still feed them, and there is great meaning in helping them survive. I now rehabilitate horses for the last 29 years, that is the greatest meaning I've ever had in my life. Give. It's the meaning of life

I can relate to this. I actually haven't read his book and I read a lot of books. I'm going to order it and read it I wanted to say, that one of the things that gives my life meaning as I find myself alone in my older years, is feeding and helping as much as I can. Feral cats. I don't know why there's just something about it that I feel compelled to help them. My day is not complete. There's just something missing if I don't make sure they have food. And I want to do more. So I do understand this. Everything else just feels banal compared to the giving.

He was put in a concentration camp by the North Vietnamese Communists. It was very hard. I told him of a quote from Viiktor Frankl's book " They can take everything away from me, but they can not take me from myself " His face lit up and he said " Exactly " From then on I did not have to pay any entrance fees to the places we went that day.🍞

I had a goal of posting at least five women a day to give me meaning and purpose to live for and to survive each day... The website helped me find meaning to my suffering. Thank you Dr. Frankl.

I'm at a loss for words. I needed to hear this because I have become so incredibly cynical and nihilistic with the passage of time. I don't even believe that love is anything more than a word with abstract meaning, yet I wish for my understanding to change and nurture my self-potential. 🍞
@joshsmith8066
@joshsmith8066 2 года назад
I am the same way and I also believed that love was nothing more than a lie to keep people working on false hope. I grew up without a mother and I was raised by an alcoholic, narcissistic father so I did not know unconditional love growing up. I know it sounds like B.S., but Frankl's love experience is 100% real. It is a transcendental feeling of true unconditional love known as "Agape" or "Metta". I have felt it once for a period of 48 hours and it was the greatest experience of my life. During the experience I felt completely free, my body relaxed entirely, everything became crystal clear, there was no question that life had meaning, all fear fell away in an instant, I no longer feared death, I felt connected to everyone on the deepest level, and I felt unconditional love for everyone (especially my worst enemy). Again, this feeling is real. It is accessible to anyone. It has the ability to change a person's life for the better in an instant. I would even go so far as to say that this state of being is the next stage in human evolution; it really is that powerful.

Thank you for the wonderful script and celestial voice. I read his book in Persian and English as I am a physician myself. There is a piece I really like. He talks about his father and such a strong believer he was. He was arrested and died in the camp like many others but Dr. Frankl wrote:" I always remember what my dad said when life was too painful to bear, even when he was dying in the worst situation of pneumonia and malnutrition: In God's will, I stand still." I am a cancer survivor myself and you can not imagine how these words help me every time I face the battle of fighting my cancer. We are all live and die but some of us have such an impact on other's lives that change them forever, for the better. Dr. Frankl was one of them and I know he is in heaven with his wonderful family and lovely wife at last. God bless them. 🍞🍞🍞

🍞 Thinking about Frankl’s book today is causing me great pause. I retired early from government and my life now is very comfortable. I’m ridiculously healthy and my avocation is horseback riding. Wonderful, yes? But I live alone, and my family relationships are very strained and difficult as they always have been . In my 20s, I gave up on all my dreams in order to create a secure future for myself . I succeeded. I preserved my life, but now, as the years go on, I am less and less sure why . People say, follow your dreams, but I don’t have any… I don’t have any wish to travel or marry, or learn to paint or much of anything specific. People say I am kind and caring, so every day that’s what I try my best to do… just be kind and caring. It’s OK . I’m not distressed.. just puzzled about how to grow meaning for my life. I’m way too young to give up..😂😂😂

I've always believed that the lead of suffering could be transmuted into golden meaning. I am surprised as someone who has studied psychology that I haven't heard of Frankl until now. I very much want to read his book. Thank you so much for sharing. The way you make your videos is incredible and super interesting. Keep up the good work 🍞🍞

I remember that one woman criticized him harshley for his fluency in, and use of, the German language in his work... "after all he had been through". He responded, quietly, merely by asking if she had any very sharp knives in her kitchen. When she said yes she did - he proceeded to ask why, when so many had been harmed by sharp knives....

"The opportunity to realize such attitudinal values is therefore always present whenever a person finds himself confronted by a destiny toward which he can act only by acceptance. The way in which he accepts, the way in which he bears his cross, what courage he manifests in suffering, what dignity he displays in doom and disaster, is a measure of his human fulfillment." Viktor Frankl, from his book The Doctor and the Soul.

I just read that quote and it’s guiding me through the sudden loss of my fiancé on the eve of our dream chapter in life (we worked very hard for 4 years to achieve it). The pain is extraordinary but Frankl inspires me to make the most of all life offers and asks of us.

@@jenmdawg Hello Jen d. I was sad to read of your pain and loss. From my experience I have learned that sometimes it is better to choose not to think about the things that cause us pain and hurt, but instead to displace those thoughts with other things. Each time the painful and negative things come to mind it is possible to instead think of things that give joy or are positive. You really can choose what you think about. It may be a book you enjoyed, a friend, a task you have...whatever you wish that is positive. Try to enjoy each moment, such a cup of tea, a movie, a walk...whatever you do, focus on it and enjoy those present moments to the full. This strategy can get you through the painful minute...the hour, the day, the night, the week and so on. Then you will be gaining the healing process of time. The mind and heart take time to adjust and heal and gain strength, but they will. Later, maybe even years later, you may wish to think of all things, that may be far too raw to dwell on now, but by then will be much easier to contemplate and process. So, sometimes the stimulus is coming from within, such as our memory, but we still have that choice as to how we respond. I hope your healing has already made progress. Best wishes for everything in your future, Anto

Dear M I, Thank you and CONGRATULATIONS on making such a good video. It is so good because the content flows and the narrator's style does not distract from the flow and the content. Nor are intrusive music, sound effects, or unnecessary visual tricks allowed to spoil the message, as they unfortunately do with very many productions. Just because such production tricks and options are available to modern creators, does not mean they make a positive contribution, and in fact they usually detract. Also the summarization of this book is so very well achieved and condensed and carries the escence of Dr Frankl's work accurately and clearly in such a short piece...that in itself is quite an achievement. Therefore, it makes the message easily accessible to many people and will help so many more. Sorry I cannot find the LOAF IMOJI on this keyboard but I did view the whole piece. I am looking forward to seeing more of your work and will subscribe...my first ever time. Best wishes, Anto

I read the book years ago, and listening to this recap, I remain unchanged in my opinion... life does not in fact have any meaning except that which you give it. If you don't have any love in your life, any meaningful work, etc., knowing that other people survived because they found meaning in those doesn't really mean anything.

Sounds very nihilistic. Too bad. I think we could try lessening the suffering of others even try to bring tiny moments of joy to others. That certainly means something to both the receiver and the giver.

🍞 For the past days, I've been lost in thoughts if my life was worth anything.. when I coincidentally found a video of a portion of Dr. Viktor Frankl's lectures. His words flicked a switch in my mind and the comments had me search for his book Man's search for meaning. I'm still reading the book, but it was certainly a slap, like a wake up call, and I needed it. I don't really think coincidence it's real, it's more of... it's for you because your attention gravitated to it.

I had a bizarre synchronicity in my life when I was 16 years old and haven’t been able to completely wrap my mind around the meaning or purpose. I was on an unsuccessful fishing trip in the San Bernardino Mountains with a friend and as we left the area and returned to the car down a narrow path along the mountain, a flock of long neck birds flew out from the underbrush of the mountains and for some immature and spontaneous reason, I pointed my fishing pole at the birds and made a sound with my mouth like a gunshot. As the birds flew away, we turned back to the path and noticed that one of the birds had froze in midair - as if it had thought it had been actually shot, but was now in a quandary as it had not. As we watched this bird, frozen in flight, in midair, I felt as if the universe was racing through mountains of coding to find a way out of this mess. The effect it had on me was to see all the rules of gravity and physics and of the universe, crash and burn right before my very eyes. I’m sure that whom ever was in charge of this particular sector of our earthly matrix was either demoted or fired. This being no doubt had to seek help from the “higher ups” and one of them probably typed in an unexplainable but ending program line for the bird to put this matter to rest. Then the bird aligned vertically while extending its wings and it began to spin vertically along an the central core of its body and the spin accelerated, so much so, that it caused the bird to rise upwards about three feet before coming to an abrupt halt and then just fell back into the underbrush of the mountain. Then my friend turned to look at me and he gingerly reached downed and slowly pushed the fishing pole in my hand away from his direction. I told him it wasn’t a rifle - it was a fishing pole!! But he replied - yeah I know - but I saw what it did to that bird and I don’t want to take any chances. That event was over 50 years ago and I can remember the whole event like it happened yesterday. Do you have any clues or ideas about this event, or have you ever heard anything similar? I would appreciate ANYTHING you could offer as I’m still mystified.

Having recently read "Man's Search for Meaning," I found this video a great deal less disturbing and more uplifting than the book, itself: Much as Viktor had distilled his awful experience into something wonderful, it is as though this video has now further alchemized and purified what Viktor had already purified of any trace of bitterness and crystallized it into a precious jewel - a pearl not of grey price but beyond any price...and a potent encouragement, even when we can see no prize upon which to set our eyes, yet to hope for growing conviction that ALM our own unique sufferings have been and will be of immense, even unimaginable service, comfort and blessings to others. Second time round, hours later, I have listened to the narrator without watching, and found this also further enhanced my appreciation of his synthesis. Roll on the synchronicities, please - and a more Jungian and Franklin approach to understanding and to serving one another! I feel most grateful for this superb presentation, and for all it took to be able to compile such an invaluable appreciation not only of Viktor's life, but if EVERYONE'S! bread emoji
