Apprentice time of running a grinder with a flapper wheel, or a cut-off wheel, is all valuable. You gain confidence in understanding that it will not kill you if you hold strong. That confidence can't be preached, it must be experienced.

Yes, I agree! 👍 we need to pass on these skills to the youth because they aren't taught in most of the schools anymore. Most Jr. High and high schools used to have shop classes, but that isn't the case in many areas anymore.

Those Diablo metal blades are awesome. A while back I needed to cut a bunch of angle for a project for my service van. My go to has always been a grinder with cut off wheels. I'm not a fabrication pro so investing in fairly expensive steel working tools doesn't make sense for me when I'm just doing little odds and ends type projects. When this project came up, I looked at a few different chop saws and such, but I just couldn't justify the cost. I did come up with a solution that didn't break the bank. I bought a cheap 7 1/4" miter saw and a router speed controller from Harbor Freight and a Diablo metal blade from Home Depot. The speed controller slows the blade down but you lose a bit of torque. It still cuts quickly and cleanly. I was intially worried about the metal shavings getting in the saw motor but I've literally made hundreds of cuts with it over the last year and a half without problems. All in, I've got about $150 in the setup. It's a pretty good, cheap alternative that will work for the average hobbyist.

I appreciated the speed of saw concept. I had contemplated putting a cutoff wheel on my miter saw.

"Slow is smooth and smooth is fast" reminds me of racecar driver Stirling Moss. His driving was described as "smooth", but then, separately but still in the track racing world, "smooth" came to be a sort of euphemism for "slow". I don't know how the euphemism came about because Stirling Moss was, in his time, one of the best.
