For someone just learning to sew and having a fear of working with a zipper.... I found your video very helpful. I especially love the cat.

Thank you! It's funny, I have to remind myself sometimes that zippers were once a source of mystery and intimidation. Now I think they're one of the easiest parts of any project that includes them. Just comes with practice. And the cats are always my favorite, too :) Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hi thanks for an informative video. I really like your no 4, brilliant, neat strong and perfect for use where the zip is going to work hard. I am nearly 70 and so wish I had RU-vid. There are so many clever makers with whom I can identify. Most of my age, when I talk about what I see on RU-vid, their eyes just glaze and I can see they haven't got a clue. May your business grow from strength to strength. Love your bags, look very interesting.

I often buy the basting tape from Wawak. Really good prices on a variety of products and fast shipping. They support dry cleaners as well as the home market. I have purchased both fabric (light weight) tape and leather tape. Really handy. They also carry industrial needles, zippers and other notions. Thanks for several ways to deal with zippers.

Right On Jason! 👍🏼 I have a consew 206rb. What binding attachment can I get for this machine. I haven’t looked but thought I’d ask while watching your video! 😃
@thejasonofalltrades
@thejasonofalltrades 3 года назад
You can attach most universal binding attachments to the bed. I use a 1" single-fold binder for 1" mil-spec 4088 webbing the most, but I also use a 2" double-fold (a 2" strip goes in and is folded twice to become 1/2" visible on either side). Binding very much depends on what is being bound. Honestly, a flat-bed machine isn't ideal for binding; in industrial settings, there are dedicated binding machines. The most success I've had is with a cylinder-arm machine, but I've yet to find one to purchase at a price I can stand. I hope that helps, thanks for watching!

Hi, I recently started sewing my bag and I wanna say your videos are most informative source for this subject! especially sewing main zipper for the bag was most hardest thing to figure out, and this video rescued me. do you have any plans for making video about how to sew and reinforce different corners (like, 3 sided corner, or L shaped seams meeting on one point like your messenger bag project) with thick fabric?
@thejasonofalltrades
@thejasonofalltrades 4 года назад
Hi, Thanks! I haven't used reinforcements in my bag corners yet, but that's definitely a good video suggestion. I'll add it to the list! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hi. I take the inner and outer fabric and sew them good sides together with a standard seam. Then turn them like you would turn a standard seam. Finger press them. Then install the zipper. The seams are trapped by the zipper seam and it is very clean.

This method will have its limitations, but I find overlocking or serging the zipper tape to the fabric at the edges, then turning and top stitching very effective. I've used that on fairly thick fabric/zipper combinations - just take it slow and use widest settings and longest stitch length.
@thejasonofalltrades
@thejasonofalltrades 4 года назад
I have a serger, and I've only used it once. I really need to try using it more! Thanks for the idea!

insert cat on lap and continue with sandwich method😂. Do you ever sew a zip with either of your walking foot machines? I have tried sewing zips on with my overlocker with limited success due to the big presser foot....but the overlocker is great for tidying up the edge first
@thejasonofalltrades
@thejasonofalltrades 4 года назад
Lol! I sew zippers on with my walking-foot machines all the time.The feet on my machines have a narrow "toe" on one side, and for #8 continuous coil zipper, it places the stitch pretty much perfectly. I've had my serger for a couple of years and still haven't used it lol. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thank you for a great video. As always, you did a great job! Do you have any ideas for a method to replace a broken zipper in an existing bag? I have a motorcycle saddle bag with a broken zipper. Would I need to take the whole bag apart or hand sew it? Thank you.

Without seeing the bag, it's hard to say, but disassembly (at least to some extent) is probably necessary for a proper repair. Feel free to email me at thejasonofalltrades @ gmail . com (remove the spaces) if you want to send some pics.

The double fold method was hard to see what's happening on camera and key parts feel rushed. I tried it and got so many layers once that fold is folder over for the top stitch... Would be great for a redo of this video with clear details and clear camera work, the content could be great!
@thejasonofalltrades
@thejasonofalltrades Месяц назад
Hi! I truly appreciate the constructive criticism. If you'll pardon the lengthy reply, I want to at least explain why I am not rushing to recreate this video to correct the concerns you raise (which are valid). I'm just a dude with a camera, trying to make videos that some might find helpful, informative, entertaining, or some combination thereof. In the 10+ years I've been making RU-vid videos, I have learned two important lessons; one, EVERY video I have ever made has something wrong with it, and two, it is nearly impossible to predict what videos will perform well enough to deserve some extra work up front. I don't do this for the money (thankfully), but I DO make a very small amount from it. On occasion, I have had a video idea that I thought could get a lot of views, and therefore generate more significant revenue, and I have put extra effort into better lighting, more thought-out dialogue, multiple cameras, etc. Usually those videos fall well short of my hopes. One of my most lucrative videos of all time is an under-two-minute tip on removing snaps, and it's one of the worst quality videos on my channel. The point of all of this is, yes, you raise some valid points, but it just isn't worth the effort required for me to make this video over again right now. My hope from this video (and generally all of my content) is to give sufficient information to help one along on their sewing journey, not necessarily to provide very detailed instructions. (Case in point, the double-fold hem is ubiquitous in some sewing disciplines, and going into great detail on how to fold an edge of fabric over twice seemed too much detail for this video to me; perhaps for some, it's not enough detail.) Again, I really appreciate the constructive way in which you worded your comment, and I will try to apply your suggestions to future videos; I'm always trying to get better, and often failing :) Thanks for watching!
@mwd6478
@mwd6478 Месяц назад
@@thejasonofalltrades gotcha. Well, I appreciate you making these videos and hopefully I get more knowledge to fill in the gaps along the way. There's such a generational gap on sewing, I think many people are really starting at zero so these micro details matter to them and your videos are so practical and enjoyable I don't think more skilled viewers would be put off by holding the pieces up to the camera for a close up and few extra seconds of detail. Thanks for the reply and I'm looking forward to your future videos!

Last September I learned to insert a zipper in the field of a panel. Basically, you baste a trim fabric to your panel, cut the opening, fold under the trim, and sew in your zipper. Here: wp.me/pa9ORF-7X I made several bags for Christmas gifts, some incorporating this method.

come on, admit it... the only reason you went in to use the machine at work was to get a reprieve from Mr. Whiskers... found your videos last night. I've been intending to remake a rucksack that is very old and failing. And since I cannot afford this particular type of bag I've decided I can afford the materials. Fortunately, I have a bag to disassemble and create a pattern, but there are certain intricacies regarding assembly that weren't obvious from disassembly. So I gave myself a crash course on every video you've posted here regarding bags. I'll try and send you a couple of shots of my finished project. PS, I'm out of coffee.
