Let’s talk about my recent weight loss… not the first time I’ve lost and gained (and lost) weight on this channel - but the first time I’ve got the help of a drug to do it. Here’s my experience so far after 4 months taking semaglutide (the compounded version of drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy).

Article with lots of links to research around GLP-1 drugs:

Compounded semaglutide is not without its risks. It is not FDA approved, and in fact, the FDA has warned about shady pharmacies taking shortcuts in production. "Patients should be aware that some products sold as 'semaglutide' may not contain the same active ingredient as FDA-approved semaglutide products and may be the salt formulations. Products containing these salts, such as semaglutide sodium and semaglutide acetate, have not been shown to be safe and effective."

I'm on Mounjaro for my diabetes. My A1c went from 12.3 to 4.7. I've also lost 89 lbs. The freedom from the constant thoughts of food and the ability to do physical things that I couldn't before is such a relief.

So true! My blood lab results are absolutely PERFECT, including my blood pressure and my cholesterol. I'm 49 yo. I walk everywhere, hate fast food (the smell🤮), used to ran marathons in my 30s. And yes, I'm overweight. My wonderful and beautiful friend eats like two young men, hates to walk and she's struggling with being too thin. We all are so different indeed.

You described that so well I went through gastric bypass 12 years ago and that part of my brain is still not off, the one thing that bothers me is that most people don't understand being overweight your whole life is because you have a problem in your brain... eating when you dont feel hunger and just exactly like you said! After watching an ad. I have come to name it as a food addiction, you just cant stop eating or just eat like a normal person. Congrats on your improved health and weight loss!
@tiffanyhanson3701
@tiffanyhanson3701 2 месяца назад
Another thing people don’t understand is that one person with food noise may only be eating the equivalent of 100 more calories than a thin person, or perhaps even 100 less calories than that thin person. But 90% of those thin people feel superior to the person that is struggling.

This made me cry. I’m so happy for you! I had a brother who suffered from weight issues and food noise his entire life. Ultimately leading to diabetes, many other health issues and eventually losing his ability to walk. His weight was so high he could no longer walk and was bed ridden and eventually lost his life to a stroke. These medications were NEVER offered to him! I’m so pissed and sad because it never should have ended that way for him. He lived for food because he couldn’t stop the noise. Even his vacations revolved around where he was going to eat. I miss my broth but so damn happy for you!!!! Our healthcare system sucks!

I have been on Wegovey for a month and a half. I have lost 20 lbs and have had no side effects. I really was getting worried at first about getting adequate nutrition but I’ve been able to focus on protein and eliminate fast and processed foods. This is the best thing that happened for my health. I have nothing bad to say about it. I want to lose 40 more pounds that I just have not been able to do on willpower alone. I too, am sick of the yo-yo dieting and the uncontrollable gluttony. Thank God for this drug.

I’m on it too! My doctor put me on it! I lost 38 lbs in about 7 months. So I’m at 199 pounds. I was so thrilled to finally reach 199! I’m diabetic too. It’s helped enormously with keeping my sugars stable. It keeps me from feeling hungry all the time. You explained it very well the way our brain works without the med and with the med! Exactly how it is with me too!

From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed, I am thinking of food. Your food chatter description is what I deal with every moment of the day. It is frustrating because you can't stop eating even though you know you are full. It is crazy. I have been afraid to start the Ozempic I was prescribed, but I am going to start it this weekend. I recently turned 49 and feel like we could have been twins because your story is mine exactly. Keep going. I am subscribing to watch the rest of your journey here.

Okay, hard truth time. Type II, high bp, high resting pulse rate, arthritic knees, herniated discs, degenerative changes that are happening way too fast in my spine and I have to have nerves treated with electricity, radio ablation, so it kills the nerve and gives me about 8 months without such heinous amounts of pain that I cannot sit/stand/lay down to sleep/be comfortable in ANY position for years. I began Ozempic and lost nearly 90 lbs in a year, I have lost another 37 pounds since January and am now not taking any diabetic meds, no more blood pressure meds, better resting pulse, better moving, better all over. It has been an invaluable tool in letting me work at this and letting me be stronger when it comes to the food grazing and emotional eating I had been doing for years. Some do not do well on these types of meds but I have been one of the very lucky ones and have been successful in loosing without rebounding like I did with every other 'diet' I had tried since I was a teenager. Glad you are having good results too and I hope you are able to continue the therapy that has worked for you!

Food noise: I can’t believe how much time and mental energy I used to spend planning what I was going to eat for lunch or dinner. I have so much more time now and more money! My food budget is sooo much smaller. Thanks for speaking out about this. I talk about it a lot on my socials because there’s so much disinformation out there. Plus, so many people hide that they are taking it for fear of judgement.

Shelley, I just turned 76 this week. Last year I woke up . Having struggled with weight for 40 plus years, I suddenly said "enough." I put myself on a rather strict diet with lots of veggies. Down 45 pounds , I am liking my body for the first time in years. Like you, I prioritize being healthy the most. As I told a friend recently, "if not now, when?" If this had not worked, I would be doing what you have done. I am proud of your progress, your research, your determination to do what is best for you.

My brain isn't my problem, my problem is a debilitating fatigue that is part of having MS. I've been fighting with my insurance company for almost 5 years because they will not cover 2 drugs that are options I would like to TRY to see if they would work but I don't meet the "criteria" for coverage. I understand your irritation/anger with they whole system. I share your bafflement about why I'm not allowed to try a drug to PREVENT ever meeting the criteria that would qualify me for the drug. Thank you for being so candid and explaining everything so well. You look great and keep at it. I am 63 and was on Ozempic for about 8 months. Lost 20 lbs and wondered why not more. I was pre diabetic when prescribed hoping it would lower my A1C. It never did. Everyone is different for sure. It wasn't until the last two months, I was very much worried about some pains I had on the left side of my stomach that would stick around. I decided then, nope, not going to continue. There is a risk for Pancreatitis and was very fearful of that. Keep in touch with your body, it will tell you things you've maybe never heard before. As far as my weight loss, well it's just about back with exception of about 8 lbs. But, I've not been very good at watching what I eat. Keep going and thanks again for putting yourself out there, it's brace and I honor you for that.

I am finally comfortable knowing and admitting that I'm a carb/sugar addict. That is a different animal than an overeater who is a volume eater but not an addict. Addiction is an entirely different animal and must be approached differently. Your current treatment is treating the addict in you and that's why it's working for you. I'm so happy you have found it. I'm not in the US so I don't have access to those drugs but at least now I understand I have to face addition and treat it without drugs.

You have just described what every drug addict, alcoholic have ever told me about addiction. Makes perfect sense to me that you are seeing results. Brain chemistry is tricky medicine, but once we figure it out... BRAVA! I am happy for you... good health is a wonderful gift we can give to ourselves. Keep at it.... Hiya ZIVA! 💚☘️💚

I just started wegovy 2 weeks ago and it's through my insurance. While it's still technically $225/mo, on the manufacturer website there is a savings card you can use in addition to insurance that brings down the cost to $25/mo. the biggest struggle is the shortage. Hope that helps anyone who's nervous about the clinics like I was!

Hi Shelly, I'm so happy for you! 😊 it's sad and upsetting that our healthcare system is so screwed, I personally don't have a weight problem, but I definitely need to cut back on sweets 😬 your video was very informative, understanding how our brain works around food, hopefully I remember that next time I get the munchies 😆... anywhooo, congratulations on your weight loss, keep us updated 😉... say hi to Ziva 😻... hugzzz 💜

I was on Ozempic for diabetes for about 2 weeks. It made me very sick. My appetite was killed but I had horrible heartburn and couldn’t move my bowels. It’s definitely not for everyone.

Don’t give up! With the right meds and other tricks those things can be managed and get so much better. Also, Mounjaro has less side effects and is even better for diabetics. The long term complications from diabetes are so awful and much worse than these side effects. Please give it another try. It’s saving so many lives including my family members!

There are FDA dosing schedules for diabetics and non-diabetics, with the diabetic dose starting at 0.5mg/week and non-diabetic being 0.25mg. If you were started at the diabetic dose, that might be one reason for the severe side effects. Another reason is that roughly 20% of patients are very sensitive to the medication and we need to provide a custom dosing schedule (like starting at 0.125mg/week and NOT increasing the dose every 4 weeks). Also because the medication slows how quickly your stomach empties after eating, often there is food sitting in your stomach when you go to sleep. There are two ways your stomach secretes acid, one is resting acid secretion and the other is food-stimulated acid secretion. The best treatment is an H2 blocker like Zantac 360 because it blocks food-stimulated acid secretion. I often have to switch patients from a PPI (resting acid secretion) like Prilosec/Omeprazole to an H2 blocker like Zantac 360 to better manage the heartburn. If you would like to discuss this, you can call or email us and I would be happy to talk to you -Dr. Itri

I feel so heard and understood, I never could find the words to explain my ‘relationship’ with food and reasons why the typical diets just never worked long term. Weight Watchers (the worst one for me), Atkins, Keto, gluten free, dairy free, etc.. I wish you the very best along this journey and truly appreciate this very informative video!

This is a very touching story. Thank you so much for sharing!! I’m 64 and around 220 pounds. The food noise - wow what a great way to describe the constant thoughts around food!! It’s endless. It wakes me up in the middle of the night and. I have to find something to eat! My mom has diabetes and she just started mounjaro. The nausea is so bad for her. The shortage in our area however has forced to doctor to change to ozempic. Hopefully the nausea will ease up. However, she is losing weight lol! I wish you the best of luck on this weight loss journey! The loss of food noise must be amazing. Stay safe!

Hi Shelly. Congratulations. I'm so happy for you finding this drug that works for you. I feel and hear your frustration with insurance companies. Like you, don't get me started. Thankfully, you were lucky enough to find a dr willing to help you. And I know you'd do your research to find the best way to obtain the drug. You have such a wonderful, positive attitude. I'm glad that it's turned down the food noises in your head. I did see Jaime French's video on her experience. I felt awful for her. You are such an amazing person and I admire you for sharing your experience. I'm sure that you've given many people hope when they thought they had none. I just adore you, and I wish you much continued success on your journey. Lots of love. Oh, hi sweet Ziva! ❤️❤️😘🐈‍⬛

Oh Shelly, I’m so happy for you!! I can see what this means to you. I too have been on a rollercoaster with my weight all my life, and have a Mom which has much to say about it. 😢 I don’t know that I would be a candidate at all, but I sure understand the constant connection with food and have struggled on and off over the years. I do know that when I’m thinner, eat healthier and am more active, I’m truly happier and feel so good. Why can’t I remember that feeling and not gain it back? Looking forward to updates. I hope all goes the way you want it to, with the drug being available and the FDA leaving things as is indefinitely. 😊

I have been on a semaglutide journey for four years. Down 50 and even with the meds it’s been slow and steady.if anyone is reading this and is frustrated it’s not coming off “fast enough”- just stay the course! I still have another 20 to go. Not everyone is going to drop it 2lb. A week. These meds have been like a miracle for me. Congratulations if you are considering this weight loss option. Congratulations to you Shelly! I’ve even hired a trainer and have been weight training. My life has changed is so many ways !

Thank you for all of your wonderful research! Most appreciated. I lost weight several years back and it came off quick with keto/carnivore and fasting. But truthfully couldn’t get below 150 pounds. So I tried harder and exercised no luck!! So I started Semiglutide this past week and dropped 4 pounds, no struggle and only side effect was fatigue and had to nap. I feel encouraged again! I do pay myself like you it would be pointless with insurance. So thanks again and will subscribe to your channel

I'm so sorry you struggle with food noise. Just in case people can't go the semaglitude route, this experience sounds exactly like my turnaround with adhd meds, specifically Vyvanse (which is prescribed for BED as well, but I never fit that diagnostic criteria). ZERO food noise until I'm hungry. I easily stop when full (slow down and forget to finish). Finally, it makes things too sweet. I can eat a few chips and be satisfied, etc. That silenced the mental OCD of obsessing, counting, earning left behind of 2 decades of eating disorders (both under/over eating/exercising/) in 20 min flat. I've done a lot of work since then (3 years) such that I'm at an incredibly healthy/balanced adult weight (lowest ever 98, highest ever 320), and I can take breaks from meds, and the food noise is reduced a ton off meds, though best managed while on them. Therapy, time, and meds recalibrated my brain. You got this short and long term!

The same thing happened to me on ADHD meds. Sometimes I would forget to eat supper. I ended up not staying in them because they didn't help enough with the ADHD to make it worth taking them. Plus, I didn't have insurance at the time and couldn't afford them.
