These videos on the new 1300gs are the best out there, you have covered pretty much everything about living with the bike that is invaluable to a prospective purchaser. Everyone already expected it to be up on power etc but you have highlighted lots of other important things to which a buyer tends to come across after ownership. Massive well done Andy on setting the benchmark with your review, really enjoyed it mate 100% 👍👍👍

Ive got the R1200 GS LC from 2013. If there is still a GS I would swap it for (although that’s not my plan any time soon: I still love the bike to bits), it would be a 2nd hand 1250 GS. In my opinion BMW totally lost it with their design, both for their motorbikes as well as their cars. Perhaps our generation is not that interesting to them anymore.
@911aircooled5
@911aircooled5 Месяц назад
@@wimdriessens864 Exactly, and agree that their design in cars are not much better. I've loved riding for 49 odd years (start at 7), and now have both the 1200 and 1250 in the garage. The 1200 is almost perfect, so happy with it. My take on the 1250 after 1 months riding is that it is slightly more refined, smoother and the gearbox is much better. TFT is ok, not that much better than the old. The new Nav6 is much better, than 5. Also I prefer the vario cases of this generation, new ones are heavy and weird shape. Spoke the the BMW saleman and he too mentioned that they went a bit too far with the 1300, so the used 1250's sell well. Happy Safe Riding, cheers.

Respect for the honesty of your review. Very well done ✅ I test rode and ordered a GS 1300 last November..it didn't turn up on March 1st as had been promised. The dealer couldn't give me any clarity/information about when the bike or the withheld luggage would become available, and with all the niggles surfacing on social media, with some being rather significant, I decided to cancel the order. I've booked several tours for this year, and luggage is required. Also the rear lights issue, and having to go into the menu to adjust heated grips, screen etc, were beginning to look a bit like a safety issue..I'd rather be watching out for the ever increasing hazards we have to negotiate than fiddling with switches...I went straight out and bought a Multistrada V4 Rally ...and I'm extremely pleased with it...could be quite some time before I go looking for another GS 😏. BMW have taken their eye off the ball.. big time !

Well, we shall see how sales go, certainly the bike has less appeal to me than the previous models.

Glad you picked up on the rear lights issue. Number of cars have that problem too. That alone makes it a "no" for me.
@jamesf8864
@jamesf8864 5 месяцев назад
Lots of cars get around this by switching off the offending light (be it a tail light/headlight/DRL) while the indicator is flashing. The problem goes away all of a sudden. The light is then switched back on once the indicator is cancelled. I'm really surprised that a manufacturer like BMW hasn't embodied a simple and safe solution like this. I fully agree that the indicators are lost on this bike, which could be lethal.
@douglasreid699
@douglasreid699 5 месяцев назад
teapotone has a video on a possible better set up for the lights from a company in England somewhere and he applied it to his new GS, makes the lights work far better, could be a solution for someone that really wants the bike but put off by the lights current set up.

Thanks for the detailed review of the new GS. I was at my local BMW dealer today and was able to sit down on two with the adaptive height option. One had a normal seat and the other had a low seat. I am 5' 8" with a 30" inseam. I put both feet flat to the ground on the one with the low seat. On the normal seat I am on the balls of my feet. Even with adaptive height both bikes were still hard to get off the side stand. By comparison I sat on a 2024 1250 GS Adventure with low suspension. I was able to get both feet flat and getting off the side stand was much easier. I think if I bought a 1300 GS I would be fabricating a longer side stand.

I have that exact same bike but with the black enduro forged wheels as I hate cleaning bikes. I'm about 1500 miles in now and the only two things I really dislike about it is the road noise from the front end and the Connected Ride Navigator. A change from the Metzlers it came with might change the noise, and I sold the CRN and stuck a Garmin Zumo XT2 on, which is beyond fantastic. There are a few minor niggles with the electronics to sort out but I trust future updates will sort that. Its a great machine and even more fun to ride than my beloved 1250GSA. Which I'll never sell. Thanks for all the video's, they're great.

Excellent follow up with your time on the Green Machine 👍 My Tramuntana arrived one week ago today so I am still in the honeymoon stage. It handles like my baby GS, rather than the 1250 👍👍Very nimble indeed 😁 I just hope it does well in cross winds. I'm only 5ft 6in with a 29" inseam so the adaptive ride height and low comfort seat was a must. It is not so bad pulling it off the sidestand. My biggest niggle so far is the shifter is too low, even in the highest setting. Anyone with longer legs their toes are pointed more downward. I also come from an off road background riding tall mx bikes. I have Touratech engine crash guards coming and just received the Hepco & Becker handlebar guards to protect those pretty turn indicators. I am leaning toward the SW Motech soft panniers with the quick release frame brackets. I am looking forward to a great summer!

Very useful video. Thanks! As a longtime BMW rider I'm not sold on this one. It's not one thing, but the whole package does not excite me. Probably, it's the increased complexity, the lack of pillion comfort coupled with the high price. Spare me the fancy 719 Tramontina details and avoid the exaust from rusting out after only 4 months. Shameful for a 24,000£ bike. Or perhaps it's just the natural evolution of things where BMW moved from being focused on a great ride to become a techky "Star Trek Enterprise" type of machine.

Good points TMF. Here in New Zealand the 1300 starts at $46000 and that's before the dreaded 'Extras'. When you consider that my Honda NT1100 DCT cost $23500 with a topbox that puts BMW's pricing into perspective. Personally I still think that the 1250 looks better and the 1250 RS would still be my first choice as I prefer the looks.

With respect to your comments about "sitting down in the bike" versus "on top of the bike", I absolutely concur, and to me, it is a little disquieting. I find that the thinner center stack in front of the handlebars attributes to that feeling. I take delivery of my R1300GS later this week, and I intend to cover the clear air deflectors on each side of the instrument stack with a black vinyl wrap material. That in itself should improve the visual ascetic to "put more in front of me" like a dashboard would be.

I'm disappointed with Motoraad. The many niggles (which would irritate me too) are simply unacceptable, model upgrades should improve everything, not introduce retrograde issues. Panniers incompatible with previous versions and not as simple. My 1200 has a standard stainless steel exhaust, looks as good as new after 6 years. I would despair at the rust on yours. I would have liked to see how/why they've changed the engine oil filter. Have they addressed the rear diff oil quantity, which is NOT 'fill to overflow'. Adaptive cruise brilliant. Makes the old cruise control suicidal. Don't sell your 1200 Andy, you would be regretting it still, in 2034.

May I ask; What is that beautiful building in the opening scene? I think when the indicator is on, then that particular brake light should switch off, or the red LEDs should turn orange and start flashing. I hate scrolling indicators. I feel they are less impactful - visually speaking. The biggest joke is the scrolling indicators that are an option on Ducatis yet they’re only about 30mm long so all but moot. Followed a 1300GS yesterday in a car and the combined rear lights, indicators are very poor. You can see the indicators are on but they are not very bright and it’s less obvious sitting next to the brake lights. Poor design. I’m sure the aftermarket will take care of this but it feels like something that has been heavily compromised for cost and will likely be expensive and fiddly for an owner to have addressed.

Having had the opportunity to try it at demo days, I tested the RT and the K1600GTinstead. The 1300 just doesn’t appeal to me at all. I had an ‘18, loved it and bought a new’23 GS Trophy. It is so purposeful looking and pretty, and the 1250 being an update for me, plenty of torque and horsepower. If I wanted to go for a prettier and powerful dual sport I would go for the multi V4. I have no doubt from hearing other people commenting about the power of the bike, but is it really the point?

Well it’s not just about the physical weight numbers of course, but how the bike carries the weight and in general the GS carries it quite low so although the Triumph Tiger maybe lighter on paper in practice you may find it easier to move a GS!

@@TheMissendenFlyer thank you sir very much for responding back. I don’t think most people take notice, because the manufactures and the dealers hide this information from them. People should start asking these questions from the manufacturers who keep demanding higher and higher prices, in most cases more expensive than a lot of automobiles, but they don’t feel the need to give necessary info, except for the usual. Especially on machines like this, where it is going to be used for two up riding for touring, loading it up with protection & gear, thank you.

@@TheMissendenFlyer The number one reason, is that the bike is just uglier. Not in the good ugly way that the outgoing model is, the front end of the bike is just really bad looking. I tried to let it "grow on me" over several days but it just never looked right. The other improvements to the bike, the radar is nice, but I've owned several bikes with radar cruise and while it is a great improvement, it isn't something I'd necessarily say is a deal maker or breaker. The improvements to the engine and shifting are there when you compare stock to stock. Some upgrades on the 1250 and you are so close it would be very hard to tell any difference. Finally, BMW did a lot of research to target the younger crowd. They like the Multistrada more, so they made the new GS look more like a Multistrada. However, why not just buy a Multistrada at that point?

I have the exact same bike but with the adjustable height feature. I just completed a four-day ride across America, and I loved it. All the complaints you bring up are minor annoyances that aren’t relevant after you spend a lot of time with the bike. The motor is better, the suspension is better, the wind protection is better, and the automatic height control is a game changer for me and my 30” inseam. The stability of this bike is what really amazes me - out in the desert, I was running at 90+ MPH and it felt like I was doing 50. BTW, I did have the 1250 GS, so I do know the differences...

At night when looking at the horizon or just beneath: The angle of the headlight needs to be well separated from the angle of the eyeline..because: We need a shadow for depth perception. If your eyeline is close to the headlight.. you won’t see a decent shadow, which CAN be a major issue at night when a post is pointing AT You. Think of a speed hump or deep pothole. We need the shadow man ! Love your review, very grateful for your experience on the bike for months. So many little gems in your review. Obviously everybody is entitled to his or her opinion. However in 50 years with motorcycles I cannot understand why people rave about BMWs. To be frank, I have the same feeling with BMW cars. I believe the brand is highly overated. All my bikes are a bit older, yet stem from the same era, so I feel I can compare them. The overall quality of my 2 Honda's is just better than the quality of my RT. Enginewise the RT is a tractor and not a very good one: rough, lumpy. A mate of mine has a RT1200 LC. The engine is still not refined. Which is not surprising as, on a bike, when you get over 700, 800 cc you need at least 4 pots to have a decent, smooth running engine. Where the RT shines is as a work bike. That's why I still have it: stability is great (also in nasty weather), weather protection is great, seat is excellent (much better than on more recent Beemers). I use one of my bikes almost each and every day all year. On really bad weather days the RT is a great bike to be on. Qualitywise BMW is bad. Rust on the exhaust of your GS is a big isssue, given the cost of the bike... I like the Chris Harris' videos. Although a BMW guy he, in my view, had the correct opinion about BMW and its engineers...

I have to agree, I just can’t go past 4 Japanese cylinders, but I wish I still had my Suzuki GS850 from 1981 with its shaft drive. My Versys 1000 SE GT has everything else I need, no extras required. As you say, over a certain engine size twins don’t seem to make much sense. I’m old enough to remember the launch of the BMW R90S in the late 1970s, and even then there was a lot of talk that the boxer engine had been taken as far as it could be. Now I see the R1300,and heaven help us, the R18, and I wonder what is going on!
