I want cry!!! I spent the last two months researching in internet which could cause the spot on my phal leaves. I was desperate, as the roots were healthy and growing. I sent pictures to sooo many persons and i asked to facebook orchid group with nooo result. I also waked up in the night to go and check my plants, then I saw the picture in this video regarding magnesium deficiency and the spot on my leaves are exactly like those! Plus I never gave magnesium but only calcium. Thanks is not enough! I,m learning a lot from you. ♥

Dania 🥹🙏🏼 noooo!!! 🥰💐 I am so glad that you found this video, that it answered your concerns, that you know what you are dealing with and how to correct the situation! That ... wow, I have no words! I am so so glad that you found this video 🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🙌🏼 IF you want to share videos like these on facebook, please do so... let's see if anyone comes out of the woodwork that can benefit from these kinds of videos, because, clearly... as you did not have any answers for so long, maybe someone else needs the same help? Thank YOU, for watching, for your feedback and for your support, Dania!! I hope that you are now looking forward to applying some of the tips this video has in it and watch your orchids grow grow grow!! 🌱❤️🌸 wishing you a beautiful Sunday 🌸

oh gosh, Walter Jr. is looking leaps and bounds better than the last time we saw him. Poor little fella almost bit the dust because of colomi lies. There is one other thing that can look like a nutrient deficiency, and it really only applies to those growing under lights. An excess of the blue spectrum (red lacking) will cause yellow patches on the leaves that will look very much like a nitrogen deficiency. No amount of nutrient supplement or pH adjustment will correct it, moving the plant to a more balanced spectrum will correct it in short order (or moving it from under the lights to a windowsill will work as well, so long as it doesn't get burned). Conversely, a lack of blue light will cause an overall yellow color to the leaves. Neither are especially common as most lights have a sufficient balance, but I have seen cheap cheap "grow" lights that will cause one or the other. (the same will apply to any plant, not just orchids) No new discoveries on my end to report today. I did bid on a blooming size division of Laelia crispa but I didn't win. Oh well, I still have my little one. But you are right, it is SLOOOOOOW. It was working on that new growth when I got it and it is just now opening the leaf. It probably ranks up there with Cattleya violacea with slowness.
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 года назад
Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! little Walter... looking mighty fine, considering what he has been through! Feels as though the little guy is desperately playing catch up 'don't do that to me again!!' 😬 Thank you for that added nugget about what artificial lights can do 👍🏼 back in the olden days, I bet those signs were much more predominant. I wonder if anyone has had that happen to them within the past decade. I have never heard anyone mention this intel on the tubes. I wonder if my crispa is even going to grow a new growth this year 💅🏼 for a whole year, it has not shifted in any way shape or form. The only thing that comforts me that it is possible a crispa (mislabelled is always on the back of my mind) is the fact that it was slow to mature the new growth it came with, and then spent the past 12months+ checking out the scenery and possibly wondering if it should bother producing another growth. As it is Sunday and another dull day, I have the lights on, and it is under the blurple lights, just to give it a nudge... low temperatures won't help with that nudge, but yeah, its behavior is making me hopeful that it is in actual fact a crispa. I don't like how squat the little seedling bulbs are, but I am hoping that they are just like that because they are seedling bulbs. 🤞🏼 I saw a violacea on Grossräschener Orchideen ... blooming size apparently, for 65€. No, I didn't buy it, nor did I buy anything else either, but to see a blooming size violacea available, that did surprise me. I really want to wish you a great Sunday, but would feel bad doing so, considering the circumstances you are finding yourself in 😘😘 man... I have PTSD from my lack of water supply last summer!! Hang in there, my friend, hang in there! I hope you have a good wall of rain come down to be able to maybe collect some water 🙏🏼🙏🏼 thank you so much for watching ❤️🌸

This is just what I needed!!!! I’ve got massive new growths on 95% of my orchids right now. I’ve recently homed/ bought a specimen size Leila that was infested with scale. I couldn’t pass up a $10 price tag!!! She’s huge, gorgeous, and now pest free. I couldn’t understand why the tips of her leaves were yellowing and drying out. It looks like it’s a nitrogen deficiency. On top of having 3 new growths, I’ve had to bump up my fertilizing and frequency of watering. Hello spring. Thank you so much for this video Nina! As usual, you’ve knocked this one out of the park!!💕💝💕

I'd take it and deal with the scale as well. Fantastic purchase... the best, when they come like that 🙌🏼 Hello Spring indeed! I still don't see it happening here, the weather is terribly cold! The jasmin is blooming but that is about it. Unfortunately with the cold front that we have had for the past week and supposedly for the coming week, there is no fragrance to enjoy. I hope that the weather breaks soon... this is a nightmare for my orchids. Feel free to share this video around, if you think that it could help someone else. FFF 🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️😍🥰💐 good evening, meine liebe Freundin! I dusted off my old archives, and modernized the look 😅 much needed! Thank YOU for your kind feedback, I really appreciate your comment! It is encouraging 🙏🏼 The weather here?? Its pathetic! Today I tiptoed around watering my tolumnia and mounts. It reached 14ºC ... only! It's gross! It looks like Tuesday is the day when I can take them all outside and flush them through.... then the day temperatures may be a little higher, which will be a relief, but overcast again. So... from what I can tell, the coming week is grotesque and no favorable conditions are in sight. BUT... that sun is rising higher behind the clouds... I am keeping the faith 💆🏼‍♀️ its getting harder and harder to do so, but I don't have any choice! I think I am going to cry the first sunny warm day 😬 your support is so very much appreciated! Hi Robert 🥰💐 I have to watch my nutrient applications this winter ... and I am seeing deficiencies, but, it is all part of the information that I can provide for the channel in future videos. Next winter, let's see if there is anything I can do differently. I doubt it, because, cold is cold... unless I have a job by then to afford the lights, it will be pushing strength into my orchids during the growing season, so that they have what they need during the months of 'starvation'. I will assess the situation when they are all outside again, and I can go gung ho! This coming week 👎🏼👎🏼 but, its getting closer.., every day, I tell myself that, like a broken record... every day its getting closer! 👍🏼👍🏼 really appreciate you watching, Forrest 😘😃 thank you so much for your invaluable support! Well done Nina, that was really useful information. I remember Rick L first explaining things many moons ago but my poor old brain needs help to remember things. It's good to be able to go over the video again as it all went by so fast 😄 and I will try and find a way to save the cards so I can refer when problems occur. Another helpful video would be on what different infections look like ie what infections cause the black spots or cell death or black rot etc. Why do Zygos seem to get rot so easily?
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 года назад
HI Carole 😃💐really appreciate your feedback, Carole, thank you so very much! Rick L ❤ You can screen shot teh info cards, that is why I make them in this format, because it is easy to save them into the phone or computer by taking a screen shot. 👍🏼 I will look into the different infections and see if I have any footage. I always like to show examples with some images, at a minimum, but I have not had any infections for such a long time, with the exception of some stem rot that just took the orchid out. Let me see how I go about making an interesting video that displays examples. 👍🏼 thank you for your suggestion, Carole! Grrrr Zygos! I find that, any orchid that has a leaf structure similar to zygos, are prone to rot, unless they are given plenty of Calcium. It is easier for us to recognize Cattleyas needing a lot of calcium because their leaves scream structure / strength which need support, but maybe when it comes to our perception of the thinner structured leaves, we don't think of them as needing Calcium in higher quantities. Just a thought 👍🏼 hope you are doing well, Carole. I wish you a wonderful Sunday and thank you so much for watching 😍🌸

HI Chantal 🥰💐 I have to thank YOU, Chantal, for watching and for your kind feedback! Zygo leaves are a pain... actually, all orchids that have the 'flimsy' structures, they really are so prone to anything and everything. Look away, and there is another spot. Some are normal... just because the environment cannot be perfection all the time. They will be the first to react. Oncidium leaves, the same. Flimsy structure and boom.... 💆🏼‍♀️ I have settled for the fact that I cannot give them perfection, so am accepting the imperfections, just so long as they can make it in my climate, and bloom. Thank you, once again, for your feedback and for watching, Chantal! I hope that you had yourself a great weekend 🌸

HI Shirley 🥰💐 many years ago.... I went down all the rabbit holes of deficiencies, like a woman possessed! It was not doing me any good because I side eyed many things my orchids were 'looking like' instead of just seeing it for a process they were going through. So, for my own sake, I broke it down into the most common deficiencies! Focus on those, try to avoid them etc... the rest will then not fall into place. From then on, I relaxed and didn't go gaga over black spots 😅 I had to dust off my notes, revamp their appearance ... so, I am glad that you stuck through the video and thank you so much for your feedback 🙏🏼 really, very much appreciated! After watching this video I think what I said in my last comment on your previous video I’m thinking I need to at least add the equal amount of rain water again, or probably tip it out and start over. The TDS just seems too high and can only get better by adding more water. As far as the PH goes of my mix, it’s a bit too low, although I did nothing to make it so low, no additives or anything but feel that at the rate it is, the plants may not be able to take up a lot of the nutrients. It’s all getting too complicated for me to understand, but I’m trying.
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 года назад
Hi Renate 🥰💐 oh.. here is another comment, which clarifies things for me 👍🏼🙌🏼 thank you so much! I should have started at the top, so that I did not have to bombard you with a novel 🙃 adding more water is the best course of action so as not to waste fertilizer. It is what I do if I get too heavy handed, and the left over is good for the next day as long as no seaweed was added. Orchid specific fertilizers will reduce the pH automatically if the dosage is done in such a way as per manufacturer's label. If we go over that because we want a higher ppm, then the pH will keep dropping, which is not a problem, but we then need to compensate that with a pH up product to raise the level to the acceptable amount ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fw7e8jMBxFc.html here is a video where I address pH a little more. Not sure if you have seen it, but just in case, I thought I would link it. I am hoping to make things as simple as possible. For that reason I made the Recipe Cards video as well. At the beginning, the understanding may fluster, but at the beginning it is important to get the nutrients into the plants and the understanding will fall into place gradually. I hope that I can make that happen for you, so that you can see results, without having to have all the other intel in place all at the same time. It will happen, I promise you! 😘

My young violacea is growing next to my young schilleriana and bellina, but the new leafs keep getting dieback. The potting mix and watering/fertilizing are the same so I'm kind of confused as to what it is. The violacea is the only one in spike currently. I have uploaded a video showing what it looked like before I trimmed the leaf and applied cinnamon. I use two drops of lemon juice to lower the pH, but I found rain water to be naturally acidic (4ppm, 6.1pH). The tap water I have is 86ppm, 8.6pH. 200th like here. 😁
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 месяца назад
Hi Joe 😍💐 thank you for rounding off the like count 🤗🫶🏼 how much calcium are you giving your phals? It is possible that they need a little more than they are getting while in active vegetative growth. I know that, my schilleriana grows much better if I focus on the calcium supply as opposed to fertilizer. I was about to loose a leaf when I ran out of calcium nitrate and did not give her any other than calmag and fertilizer, and the moment I got calcium nitrate again and got it into her system, she stopped aborting the leaf. I am assuming that the roots are doing well in the pot. IF not, then calcium will also promote the root growth 👍🏼 rain is slightly acidic yes...it picks up a lot of debris (microscopic) that lowers the pH of rain. Its great though... I wish I could collect rain water or even have rain during the warm months of the year to let the orchids just get the best that mother nature provides. Hope you are doing well, Joe! Thank you so much for watching and have a fabYOUlous Sunday 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Great presentation! I think information like this is best served dry so we can refer to it without distraction when the babies get sick. I know/knew much of this but still forget and a 20 minute refresher is very nice to have(My citrus and coffee trees are also consistent reminders of deficiencies). Hopefully there will be a playlist on nutrition at some point (including the previous videos on PH and water quality). P.S. There is the greatly debated topic of foliar feeding but it would be interesting to hear if you have had any experiences with it especially for those immobile nutrients.

HI jjdawg 🤗💐 my apologies!! I have never seen the double 'j' in your name, and always referred to you as jdawg! 🤦🏼‍♀️ sorry about that! Many years ago, I was going down rabbit holes on deficiencies and just loved the subject, and then found myself side eyeing my orchids with any new spot I saw, or a different curl of the leaf etc etc I had to protect me from myself 😅 so, I broke it down for myself into the most common deficiencies and with those covered, many others would not appear ... never easy videos to just talk about the subject, but.. I really appreciate your feedback! A nutrition playlist.... mmmmhhh... I am tempted 😅 I will give it some serious thought, though, now that you mention it 😉 I have never used any immobile nutrients in my spray bottle that I go around with during the hot months of the year. Only ever seaweed. I have shied away from doing that, not because there is something wrong with it, but because I do not have any humidity to help the water stay on the leaves long enough for the nutrients to be absorbed. The water evaporates so fast here, the mineral build up on the surface of my pots, from the run off, would be a real thing. So, I cannot really speak to that subject, but, trust me... if I were in a climate that had humidity of 70%+, I would be adding Ca Nitrate to my sprayers, in low quantities, but for sure, I would do that 👍🏼 I hope that answers what you were getting at? let me know! Once again, my apologies for not seeing the double jj in my previous replies! Thank you so much for watching, jjdawg! Have yourself a great Sunday 🌸

@@NinjaOrchids Thanks for the detailed answer. I forgot about the dry winds where you are. The mineral deposits would definitely be a problem. And I should apologize since I just changed my account name from jdawg to jjdawg so you didn't get it wrong(just too many notorious jdawgs out there). In any case its just a nickname so jj, jjd ,jdawg etc are fine. No worries and have a great day!

Which orchid types attract more bugs and why are they called bug magnets...is it the bulb or the roots ( besides the happy sap)?
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 года назад
Hi Desire 🥰💐 I see a full fledged video coming up for this question. Give me a few days to gather my thoughts, and put them into something that doesn't sound as if I am talking as if on a merry go round 😬 Usually it is the orchid itself. Not just a single structure that attracts bugs. Decay in the pot, will attract bugs, but they are the harmless kind, they are just a nuisance, ie fungus gnats. I have taken a screen shot of your comment and will get to work 👍🏼 thank you so much for watching, Desire! And for your question!! Hope your Sunday is going great 🙌🏼🌸

HI Mary 😃💐 Thank you very much for your feedback, Mary! I have screen shot cards for the 4 deficiencies which show the ppm and frequency of application. The info card for Calcium is at 8:18 . Lovely plant that you have there and thanks for the information I’ve just had a phals Given to me by my sister-in-law yellow plant with a pink centre got some lovely roots inside the pot it looks quite happy do I remove it now or wait I have water flushed it out with some water and just leave it on my windowsill

HI Andrea 🥰💐 welcome to your new plant! What a wonderful gift from your sister-in-law!! I would wait! Please wait! Not because of the blooms, but because of the shock it may be in while it is getting used to it's new home. The flush will be perfect, and when the media is dry again, give it a soak of CalMag at 60ppm at 6.7 pH. If the roots look good, then, keeping the roots happy at this point in time is the most important thing, and changing her set up at this point in time could cause the roots to fail. There is no rush to repot... wait it out, until the temperatures rise enough (even outdoors... not just counting on the fact that your home is warm enough) there is something to be said about phals coming into our homes new, and repotting at the wrong time even though our homes are warm enough. 👍🏼 the less stress for her for the coming 6 weeks, the better. Thank you for watching! Have a beautiful Sunday, Andrea 🌸

Thank you Nina, again 😊, for this very helpful video. I've got two "summerbloomer"- phalaenopsis with these signs of magnesium deficiancy in the old leafs. Can you please advise, in which concentration I can offer them a soak with epsom? My tab water is about 300 microsimens. It seems to high to add magnesium to it. Maybe 1/2 tab water 1/2 destilled water and then add epson up to 300 microsimens? I am frightened to burn the roots. What do you think?
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 года назад
Hi Sandra 🤗💐 I fully agree that the tap water concentration is already high and you are right not to add Epsom salts into that. The following timestamp, has the Magnesium deficiency card, which you can screen shot 10:42 on that card I have 2 options for correction, incl. pH and how many ppm. I do not work in microsiemens because it is not as universal a number as ppm. If you use tap water, always let it sit for at least 3 hrs before using it on your orchids. Especially because the chlorine will be too high if fresh out of the tap. Letting it sit out, the chlorine will evaporate out of the water, making it safer. Half and half is a good option, but ... let the tap water sit in an open container before using it, even if you do go ahead and dilute it. I hope that the time stamp helps you to get the information and... in time, that deficiency will correct itself. 👍🏼 thank you so much for watching, Sandra! Have a great rest of your Sunday 🌸

@@NinjaOrchids thank you, I don't know how 100ppm is translated in microsimens.🤔 Then only destilled water with epson up tp 100 ppm?
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 года назад
@@sandrag8656 www.easycalculation.com/unit-conversion/ppm-microsiemens-conversion.php here is a link to a conversion calculator. I don't want to be spending your money on buying just distilled water, so.. check out the link and see if the 50% water & 50% distilled water will be adequate. I would suggest the Blitz absorption if you go with 50/50. This way, you can flush the pot out afterwards, the orchids get what they need and then you can supplement with CalMag to keep the correction treatment as a back up.

@@NinjaOrchids, sounds good, flushing after soaking...👍 Hopefully it works in my bark enviroment. Think, I'll try 50/50 then. This helps a lot, thanks for your time, Nina, and have a wonderful evening! ❤🙆🏻‍♀️🌺
