I love the way you sounded on the Cannonball! Very clear and yes bright. It would cut through a band on stage as a soloist. But it was rich at the same time. I would love to hear you play it after you had it for a week and you felt comfortable with it.

Rolled tone holes bring more troubles than benefits. Almost no pros in the tone, the feel, but it's much easier to have sticky pads and if they're warped it's very hard to level them.

I've been playing the Sax for 40 years and now have 7, all of which I love. Having watched many of your videos and of course listening, to my ear regardless as to which of the 4 saxophones you played you sounded like you. For me, I have chosen my 7 saxophones simply on how they feel to me in my hands and whether I play my Martin Magna, my Yamaha Custom 875EX, or my Keilwerth etcI (to my ear) always (as others lso say) sound like me. The Sax I tend to play the most is my Eastman 52nd St as 1) it's less precious and 2) it just feels great in my hands> Keep up the good work

Great video, Jay. I found the Cannonball too bright sounding for my taste, Someone I know has P Mauriat which I enjoyed playing. it has a nice feel and tone and as you said the vintage look is really good. I still feel my Yanagisawa is better, however. I was surprised at the price as I don't think it compares to my Yanny WO10 which was a bit cheaper in price.

Wow…you sound like…well yourself on all of them. That by the way is a good thing! As an intermediate player I’ve noticed that some horns seem to blow easier (I tried a p.mauriat “Le Bravo” which was really easy to blow but felt it didn’t have the same depth/richness in the sound) or sound a little brighter etc. Hearing your impressions of sound, ease of getting out low notes, altissimo etc and of course price would all be great.

Hey Jay, love all your vids bud! a big fan too It's strange, this video just popped up and I checked the date you uploaded it. Wow,,, what a crazy moment i just had....what I'm getting too is that Thought it was time to upgrade. Yamaha yas25 was my current sax at the time. I visited the London Sax store last early October(great service) and tried quite afew Alto's. Loved the P.Mauriat 67R DK!! Infact I couldn't make up my mind after that walked away and returned a week later narrowed it down to 3 Altos. The P.Mauriat was the one that caught my heart. So I purchased it and that is me Today..... Now looking at this Video, I can see that you played and tested the exact Alto sax that I purchased, reason I say that is bcause the store only had one in stock when I was there and looking at the Abalony cut shell on the keys....its the exact same pattern marking of the shell cuts on the keys that match the one I bought. The pattern on these shells are very rare to be found exact.... as I looked at afew others when I was back at the store and they are different. I'm very proud to say that you played my P.Mauriat Alto Sax 😊😁👍🏽. Also that makes me so happy now to play my sax knowing a Idol of mine has played it 🤭👌. What a coincidence...crazy! That is Awesome 🎉

From my own experience, it can be very overwhelming going into a place with such a selection available. I dont know how to narrow them down necessarily, but i would suggest not more than like 3 to 5 horns for testing. It's really easy to keep them all straight if there are more than that. Jay, i think your testing only is about perfect. I would imagine a person could sit down with 4 and eliminate possibly some entirely but otherwise it may be hard to pick between so many.

I was choosing between the P. Mauriat 67R and a Yanagisawa AWO1 an AWO2 and ended up with the AWO2 as I love the feel, response, rich warm sound and good projection of the bronze Yani over the others.

The cannonball comes with two different necks. The standard one(the one played in this video) and the Fat neck. I have the Gerald Albright alto and my God that fat neck is a game changer. I suggest everyone at the very least try a cannonball with a fat neck when shopping for a new sax, it offers something different to other saxophones.

They all sounded GREAT! It is becoming apparent, the purchase of a new sax is down to; how does it feel playing it, appearance and price. I’ve been playing a MarkVI tenor I bought new in high school (feel free to do the math and guess my age). After shopping for about 2 years I decided on a Mauriat 76. The local repair guy is a dealer and ordered one. He made me “a deal I couldn’t refuse”. I get a thrill every time I open the case and get it out to play. Sure I would have the same with a new Selmer or any number of new horns today. But it came down to price, playability (I previously played a 66 in his shop), service, local dealer, and appearance (love the dark lacquer finish). I’ve had my VI, ‘59 Buffet SDA and the new Mauriat all out. Side by side, if there is a difference in the sound it is negligible. The SDA is a heavy horn, the VI has the typical key noise and issues associated with a horn well played for nearly 50 years. The Mauriat has me falling in love with playing all over again.

Soundwise I felt like the Eastman and Cannonball were the extremes, the Eastman seemed very round and darker and the Cannonball had a definite edge none of the others had. I think if you're trying a sax you should take your favorite mouthpiece because though the differences are small, I could see it tilted your sound.

Would you recommend buying an Allora AAS-550 alto sax?

I don't know if it's my hands or what, but I've had the opportunity to try every sax out there because I used to sell them, but I've always noticed with the Cannonball, when I press the G# key, it pinches my pinky when I release it, which throws off my timing when I play

You like the Yanagisawas, and I think they like you. You sounded best on that one to my ears

I've tried most of these. I opted for a Selmer Ref54 in the end though. I've never felt too at home with Yani horns. There's nothing wrong per se, just not for me. The Cannonball is such fun for soul and more commercial styles. Just wasn't what I was looking for at the time (Although I definitely spent a while screaming some altissimo while the store was doing a last check over of the one I'd chosen).

Agree. I love my ref 54. Smooth.

That place is like a kid going to a candy store. My mouth is drooling! I hope to take my sax playing daughters , but I’ll have to save a lot of money. I have 3 daughters. Just a question. Will I have to pay duty if I were to buy a sax or two and bring it back to Japan or the US?
