I read Girl With The Pearl Earring a long time ago and loved it. I can’t remember why. Maybe because I love the painting. I’m dipping my toe into Steinbeck because I had to read Grapes of Wrath in high school and hated it.

I can understand people loving Girl with a Pearl Earrings because I think Chevalier is a talented writer. I'm just someone who struggles when there's not much plot. I am still keen to read another Chevalier at some point

I read the red pony last year, and while I didn't initially love it, I came to like it more with time. I agree that it felt disjointed (and now I know why!). I also agree it's hard to live up to my fav of steinbeck's novels. Even by the man himself.

I think my expectations are always a bit too high with Steinbeck because of my early reading experiences with him. I remembering being disappointed with Cannery Row but I really want to reread it now because I'm sure I was unfairly comparing it to his other books.

I really liked Sing, Unburied, Sing but I definitely agreed with wanting more of the grandparents story. I also really struggled with Leonie and JoJo’s dad and how they treated their kids. Realistic in a way that was hard to read. I liked Salvage The Bones by this author more and felt like it was a more cohesive novel

I will definitely check out Salvage the Bones. Despite the plot not coming together for me, I still love Ward 's writing. And I was thoroughly angry at JoJo's parents. It was heartbreaking.
