I think you touched it, but I don't play RPGs for any therapeutic reasons. Therapy is therapy and RPGs are not therapy. I am the GM, not a psychiatrist. If you need therapy, please seek out a licensed mental healthcare provider, not your GM. One more: I do not play RPGs to tell a story. Storytelling to me implies an agenda. As the GM my goal is not to tell a story but to create a vibrant and interactive living universe in which the players act and in turn it acts upon them. I do not have an endgame or climax in mind when I start a session. I want the world to tell me what it wants.
@Jimalcoatl

I'm right there with you. If you are playing TTRPGs as therapy, you are really just selfishly trauma dumping on your GM and fellow players without their consent. I am neither inclined nor qualified to be a therapist. I'm a nerd who likes playing nerd games. I don't have any patience for people who bring their mental issues to the game table and force me as GM to try and accommodate or mediate for them.

Just bouncing off what you said, not trying to argue. Role play is often used in therapeutic settings. It’s a great tool where play becomes part of a learning experience. I get it, that’s not why you play. Which is totally cool too.

Well, we are going to disagree because I do play tabletop RPGs to tell a story. I just do it with other people or myself. Storytelling doesn’t have to entail having an agenda. That’s not understanding how storytelling works in a TTRPG or thinking about it erroneously. Storytelling in a TTRPG is fluid and (potentially) collaborative. If it makes it more palatable, you can call it story discovery. However, no matter what you call it, there needs to be a story. If there is no story, you are not playing a tabletop RPG. You’re rolling dice and talking into the wind for no purpose. That’s never interesting. Peace 5000. 👊🏿

i wrote that storytelling TO ME impies an agenda. I do not acuse people of wrongfun. I strive every session to create an vibrant and living world (or worlds, or solar system, or even galaxy). I create NPCs, governments, trade.guilds, criminal syndicates, gangs, corporations, and armies. My goal is to make all of them behave independemtly of my personal attitude. I think "What is their motivation?" and I let them go, like winding up a clock. I don't tell a story. I may lay down a dozen adventure hooks at any given time, from political intrigue, smuggling, mercenary work, to counter-kidnapping/rescues, and that does not count what the players come up with on their own. I think, to me, storyrelling is the opposite of sandbox gaming. I want my players to maximize their own experience. So if their is a story the players are the ones telling it. I am not forcing them to sit and listen to my bad fiction.

Enjoyed the video! However, I do disagree with one point: One can still be an introvert and prefer playing TTRPGs in a group. I tend to prefer that setup because one, it gives me a break from my introvert mode. Yes, it is a preference, but being more of a solitary person does in fact have its limits. And two, TTRPGs provide a well-defined framework for socializing. I don't have to think about what we're going to talk about, I don't have to worry about entertaining a social group, or failing to do so. In fact, I don't even have to worry about keeping the conversation flowing. The game creates the entire social theater for me. I don't even have to be "me" half the time, as the game is primarily about staying in character. As an introvert, TTRPGs are FAAAAR less draining on the social battery than most other social activities.
@RPGElite
@RPGElite 2 месяца назад
I agree, but obviously, not all they way. Not at all. That being said, there are different kinds of introverts. I happen to be a social introvert. However, when it comes to tabletop RPGs as an RPG Elite (those last four words to that clause is an important distinction), my preference is solo. Never have to wait for people to show up, never have to get a group nod for actions or wait for them, never have to try to get everyone back on track. In solo mode, the game is always ready, always the perfect tone, always an immersion experience as I like. Thanks for the comment. Keep it Leet. 👍🏿

@@RPGElite Good point! Solo play does seem to have its share of advantages as well! Honestly, I haven't given solo play a shot, but I've been slightly curious about it. Any games you can recommend, or any videos you've already put out covering the topic (I'm fairly new to the channel, so sorry if I'm asking you to retread old ground)?

Free League has solo rules for most of it's games. The Walking Dead has particularly fun solo rules if you're into map crawling, base building and zombie survival. Vaesen also solo rules. If you like Star Trek, there is a solo version of Star Trek adventures called Captain's Log. If you like fantasy, Scarlet Heroes is a great solo game. You can also use system agnostic solo rules for any game like Mythic GM Emulator or another solo engine with any game you like.

I started to play Solo. Because I can not count how many times I prepared a campagne or adventure just to have people cancel meetings minutes before we wanted to start or to not get along with each other and quit playing. I love the Myth GM Emulator 2. Currently I play an Alien Campagne which I always wanted and never found a group for. I can´t recommend playing solo enaugh.

QoTV: I do not play RPGs to fill a void. 100% not what they are for and not what I want out of them. Now, I really enjoy these deep and nuanced topics, I could discuss this for hours on end and still have more to say and think about. Before I get into my thoughts, I just want to say I loved hearing that your wife is your best friend. My wife and I have always said this about each other and there are some more old fashioned folks I’ve heard that say it’s not true, or that “your spouse isn’t and shouldn’t be your best friend” and I disagree. I think a true happy couple are best friends because that’s a foundation that will keep you together forever, but it’s not the only thing a couple must have together. Now for the topic, I know I mentioned it in the Guilded server, but one reason I do play RPGs is because of the fun social aspect. To me that is different than “social connection”. I don’t play with other people to form a connection with them or strengthen a bond, but I do play (and enjoy it) with them because I have a bond built already. The vehicle of telling a story with friends that have the same goal in mind is very enjoyable to me. I do want to get into and experience some solo play because I totally get where you are coming from. The nuanced part of this to me is that, when you are playing with other people, while it can be amazing (good story) and fun, there is always a chance that there are mishaps or things go in a direction that you don’t want. That pulls you out of the story and the roleplaying experience and that’s definitely a con to me. I can’t say whether or not I’d rather risk that vs play alone for the best rpg session. Last thing I want to comment is that I disagree that enjoying min-maxing automatically means that person cannot and will not be there for the story, or that they will have a 1 dimensional character with no story. Maybe I’m just not a true min-maxer (I generally refer to myself as an optimizer) but I always include story and character as part of my “builds”. I build the character within a logical framework for their story and they character, to be as strong as it can be within that. Not just for the sake of being powerful where all of the best options are chosen. To me it’s that as a combatant I’d strive to be the best I could, and I don’t see why my character wouldn’t do the same. It just doesn’t come at the expense of the story of the character for me.

QotV: I do not play TTRPGs to act as a proxy for my own mental health therapy. We've all had difficulties in life; trauma, loss, injury, etc. But these tables are not the place where we should be going to exorcise our inner demons, or to fix the broken parts of ourselves. They may be helpful as part of a larger tool kit (many regular tasks can be somewhat therapeutic if used smartly), but using these as a singular focus for one's mental health challenges is folly.
@nicholaswells4572

I believe you CAN do that. I think that is a perfectly valid way to play, if EVERYONE ELSE is there to do the same thing too. Roleplay as a very basic concept is essentially an act of, what is known in psychology, as "transference" which is a real phenomena. But if YOU'RE the only one there to do that, and everyone else is using it as a form a fantasy/sci-fi, whatever genre, form of escapism - then you're the problem at the table, and not the content.

It's certainly easier to get what you want playing solo 😂. Not my preference, but different strokes for different folks. For the Question: I don't play to fill a void or socialize. I like to socialize with the gaming buddies, but it's not the driver for my RPG gaming.

Fill a void, because I've been there. You are dead to rights that it isn't a good thing and I did get addicted with a session almost every night or every other night. 4-7 times a week was way too much in retrospect and I can't even fathom how that person you know pulled off 17 and was able to live at all. Here's mine: I don't play RPGs to vent my frustrations with inadequacies I feel in my current stage of life. I've seen this a fair bit, especially while doing World of Darkness, and it never went anywhere good.

Video review: I like how you stick to your guns and have very specific guidelines for yourself. Question of the vid: One reason I don't play tabletop RPGs is " I want everyone just to have a goofy funny time and not focus on telling a good story". I don't want to sound like a curmudgeon, but it irritates me when people are not even willing to try and make a little bit of a deeper story, but just focus on what they think is funny. I always try to emphasize that humor should happen as a result of the story, not be interjected at the expense of tone. Question for you: how do you recommend somebody with a limited pool of in-person players go about finding or expanding their group? I like the idea of being selective, but I worry that if I have too many criteria on who I play with then I would not have anyone to play with at all.

@RPGElite
@RPGElite 2 месяца назад
Good question. I’d ask this first - why do you want to expand the group? Why is the current group not enough? Could you be better and do more with your current group? If you want to move forward still after answering and analyzing your answers, you may have to go outside of the current group you have and make new acquaintances. It may be you will have to teach some new people in a separate group. Maybe volunteer to do this at your local gaming shop if you have one. Just for those who want to learn. There may be one or two people who are good candidates for your group. There are also some online TTRPG sites where people may be located in your area. Hit them up and see if you guys can meet up for a coffee or something to talk if they are willing. You’ll definitely have to do some reaching out, but don’t be anxious about it. Just reach out here and there and see what happens. 😊👍🏿 Keep it Leet. 👊🏿

I do all my gaming either solo or online these days, and I'm currently running a campaign (we passed the one-year mark in March) with people I've never played with before. A lot of GMs will accept players on a first-come gets the spot basis, but my process is first-come first-interviewed. I need to vet my players to make sure we all understand what the game is, what's expected from them (and me), and that we're a compatible bunch. My campaign is in the horror genre, so atmosphere is key, and it can't be maintained if the players don't buy into the themes of the game. But that's really key for any genre.

I DON’T play TTRPGs to create controlled environments. I quite enjoy playing with strangers who bring unexpected personalities to the table. I think I’d quite enjoy playing a game you. I can add, I don’t play solo TTRPGs to explore the machinations of my mind. I prefer to do that as a collaborative venture in a shared experience. I do play solo with new systems to understand how they operate, and practice mechanics. Fluency with mechanics frees my mind to role play instead remembering the minutia of what dice to roll.

Being a nerd does not necessitate being an introvert. What's more, being an introvert does not necessitate being a loner. I was an introverted nerd in my childhood (I grew up in the late 70s and early 80s), and spent a lot of time on loner hobbies like drawing, amateur radio, and computer programming. But I was also extremely grateful for the D&D group that a fellow high school student ran from his kitchen on Tuesday's after school. I loved the game, but I especially loved having a group I could call friends, that were just as nerdy as me, and the game was a way to fellowship -- and primarily: HAVE FUN WITH OTHER PEOPLE. Once per week was typically enough for me, but I still required some human contact. We are human beings after all. Many of the people who played at our gaming table were very outgoing (though, nerdy in their own way). One was a drama nerd, another was on the baseball team. Most of us had very large families (more than 3 siblings). This idea of nerddom as something you do in your basement in the dark by yourself, is pure nonsense. A manufactured myth you find in pop culture, not in reality. It wasn't that way in the 70s, it wasn't that way in the 80s, and its not that way now. The only difference now, is that children are conditioned to be politically hyper-sensitive. So, they refuse to socialize with the wrong opinions.

Some of these are surprising but understandable. As a former gaming convention organizer, I loved (for the most part) playing with strangers. I only had a few bad experiences in my 25+ years of doing games at conventions. But that's me and I respect your reasoning. Thanks for this, I needed hear something like this. Going through a slight dry spell in gaming myself because too many of my gaming friends have passed. This helps me focus and ask myself why I play RPGs.

Its interesting the place RPGs lie, many friends or family dont fit and i wouldnt/wont play with them, its not a place i go to blab and vent about work or life (although pre-game banter is a thing and a nice little lubricant to connect the group). The group im in has been going for almost 2 years now, i was brought into the group by a friend who didnt last, and several others didnt either. Now we have a solid crew that shows up, and commits to the roleplay. As you say, it is, about the story.. Not forcing the players down a path from A to Z, but merging psychies and existing in another world together, as someone else(or many personas if youre the GM). The result is beautiful, like lucid dreaming with a coherance that leaves lasting memories. Tapping into our inner childs imagination and our adult focus/analytical nature. The people i play with, although we dont really meet outside of group, id like to think we know each other on a different level more than even our families or friends. Lastly... I learned recently to not play with randoms, ran the walking dead for a group on discord from the TWDrpg discord, and the result was me putting in a bunch of work, and the others either barely engaging, power gaming, or hogging the spotlight, burning up prescious time, and pissing off myself and all the other players. I guess i should have taken "RPG Elites dont play with anyone" to heart, but some lessons we need to learn the hard way.

I love the time I spend with my friends slaying dragons or skulking around Night City. Board Games with friends gives me the same satisfaction. It is probably because I am quite the introvert, and I just don't have anything to say to people...unless we have common interests, so in a way RPG's/board games turn me into an extrovert for a bit. When it comes to solo RPG's - I have computer games for that. 3, 4 and the runner up - I am with you all the way on those however.

QotV: To the first part, I think it's a tie between Filling a Void and Playing Power Characters. As to filling a void, that void doesn't exist. I enjoy playing TTRPGs, and I'd be bummed if I had to stop (and I had for a while as life temporarily led me down other paths), but giving them up wouldn't create an emptiness. I play TTRPGs because I want to, not because I have to. As to creating power characters, I just don't find that enjoyable. I make characters with flaws, which has irritated more than one fellow player. "No no no, you should choose this so you can get the maximum dice/bonus/whatever!" "Yeah, but this other way is more interesting, and fits the story better." Yeah, I'm a role-player more than I'm a roll-player. That also might be why I shy away from most level-based games. If I may add, your runner-up resonates, too, but as a straight white Anglo-Saxon Protestant male, nobody cares about my identity enough for identity politics to be a thing for me anyway 🤣 If I were to add to the list, I'd say "I don't play TTRPGs to simulate video game experiences." That's not to say I won't or can't enjoy a setting based on a video game; just that I don't want mechanics that try to match the video game experience. I do play video games, and enjoy some, but I expect more from my TTRPG gaming.

What you say about putting the RP back in the RPG, that's the perfect explanation! It's about playing a role, AKA a character, that would be fun & interesting for the other characters in the story to hang out with. It's about being a team player to both the other player & the GM. Which means already knowing them & passing a vetting process of best player practices that everyone agrees with. My trauma is not fun or interesting. Also, I'm not the "writer", the GM is. They went through all the hard work of making a fun game, so they should get final cut & referee powers if I'm running my character in a way that harms the game they made.

QotV: I don't play (and will drop out of) games or groups of players that: - Use ttrpgs to play out weird kinks and sex/romance fantasies. - Use ttrpgs as a way to act out violent and sadistic control fantasies. That being said, the longest running campaign I ever played was a White Wolf V:tM campaign that lasted over a decade and if V:tM is built for anything, it's built for weird kinks, violence and sadism. There's ways to include that but when kinks and sadistic power fantasies become the reason for the game, I'm out.

Nearly everyone untrained gets the definition of introvert vs extrovert wrong. Enjoying or preferring in-person ttrpgs doesn’t disqualify someone from being introverted. There’s not exactly different types of introvert; there’s degrees of introversion with degrees of other traits. You could take a Big 5 personality test and see your degree of Extraversion (low trait extraversion would indicate introvert tendencies) and how you score in the other dimensions would tell you your “type” of introvert.

My reasons for playing RPGs: 1. Social connection with guardrails, due to my childhood traumatic brain injury, RPGs are a good construct for interacting with others - which is why MANY styles ('grimdark' or 'edgelord') simply are repellent to me. 2. Creativity Exercise - I prefer NOT to have every aspect of the game nailed down and I especially loathe those overly dependent upon combat. I want some area outside the lines which I could make available to myself and others. I also dislike the RPGs that seem to restrict such by obfuscating the understanding of the mechanics as if they were hiding source code or something. (Infamous unnamed fantasy RPG , looking right at you.) 3. Expanding horizons. I cannot physically travel to any alien world or fantastic place so the game is my closest alternative. Rather why I tend not to play movie or book series 'tie-in' RPGs. I got other ways to get where I want to go. Why I don't: 1. I just do not want to explore the darkest depths of human ugliness as a character. I'd rather oppose such and be a candle in the darkness. (Again, no fan of 'edgelord' stuff.) A carefully cultivated fall from grace and thus redemption arc, maybe... 2. Endless combat. Nope. I personally have been in about 3 fights and lost all of them. Combat does not enthuse me overall as an end-all be-all. Striving against darkness and saving a village or community or defeating some great evil has multiple ways to achieve such, combat is one of them. So if one must fight evil, just lining up on a grid and boardgaming it is not the way. 3. To learn about people. I damn well want to know exactly what I can expect from a group (individually and collectively) long before I ever sit down to game. Been burned enough by people using gaming to fulfill their darkest whims (and control freak tendencies towards other gamers) to where I really do not have any [bleeping] desire to go there again. ... Part of why I think I gel well enough with the philosophy expounded on the channel. This is my leisure time, I could be home playing Fallout or Skyrim or Minecraft otherwise to avoid the drama (or attempts to further traumatize me as some groups have attempted and even accomplished).

Oh, as to the last, if a game wants to signal all sorts of stuff at me it had better hope that I approve of it and also how it is offered. Plus, if that is all they bring they still [bleeped] up real good. And more importantly, if I feel MANIPULATED by them in some way that ... vexes ... me considerably. The infamous fantasy RPG is very much manipulative in its way in trying to rewire the brain into being addicted to the combat sequence to the exclusion of all else to where story only exists to propel the group into an initiative roll. I am deeply averse to ever getting back on that treadmill. Just done with it. I know who I am and I know what I believe and why, an RPG can either safely agree or remain quiet if they don't. A lot of RPGs do a nice little blurb and I am very fine with that. Maybe an art piece, sure. But I also want MORE THAN THAT. I want a solid system and solid setting and also 'ease of use' modularity that lets me go off the edge of the map. If the system only does one thing real well it had better be worth the effort for that one thing. I dunno. I just spent decades with good systems attached to bad settings, or good settings attached to bad systems. If the company's only hope of getting my business is trying to 'love bomb' me with their approval of my life, they might have failed. Just as I endured its lack long enough to get to 54, I certainly don't really need it now. (But hey, if they already had good product and then their ethics also align? Bonus.)

I'm not a social person but playing solo just seems kind of boring. I mean when you play solo you pretty much get the gist of what is going to happen. There is no spontaneity or mystery about it. That almost seems like a completely different category of game. If I was going to have a solo experience I would just play a computer game like BG3 or one of the Elder Scrolls games.

Wrong. This is simply not true at all. It's clear that you've never played solo. These are all assumptions, not reality.

One way to put a little more surprise into solo play is through some groups checks or rolls to see what a character might do. So instead of me deciding that they search a room, I might do a wisdom group check (or something similar) to see if they make good decisions. Solo play is different, and I run and play with groups as well. For me, solo play is mostly a way to test scenarios/mechanics beforehand. (and get in a little dice rolling during the in-between times) I don't know Servant, but believe he plays both solo and in groups, so I don't think he is saying one or the other.

@@sharpmountaingames9303 I can totally see using solo play to test out scenarios as prep for live play sessions. For me though solo role play isn't role playing so much as more of a tactical game. Meaning you can run combats in this way kid of like how people will play chess with themselves. But its not really role playing. You kind of need at least one other person to riff off of.

When you say _"solo,"_ do you literally mean _"just you?"_ Or do you mean you as the only player with someone else as GM? I ask because solo without at least a separate GM (or 1 solo player and you GM) I can't quite grok how you play literally solo, unless an adventure is written specifically for solo play (which I have seen _waaaaay_ back in the day). My personal favorite way to play is with as small a group as.possoble. I prefer me and one other, as my bestie from school used to play 40 years ago. Each of us would alternate GM, depending on what we felt like playing. *_Traveller?_* He's the GM. *_Gamma World,_* I GM. And *AD&D* was unique for us and we'd alternate GMing. All that aside, when I was younger, I saw the advantage of the large group of friends where chips and salsa were just as important. Those were the *social games.* And it was how many of my friends played on the regular. But I really had to _not care_ about my character and the story, like I do in my smaller more personal games. Ultimately, the best games for me were 1 GM & 1 Player. Some of those games have lasted for years. It has been decades, yet I still reflect back on those adventures to this day. Certain music tracks will remind me of certain game adventure moments, just as they might for some remembering a scene from a movie score. Thanks for the video. Always enjoyable to get your insights.

I literally mean solo. Solo play has been around since the inception of tabletop RPGs. _Classic Traveller_ had it, _Classic Advanced Marvel_ had it (there are at least two solo modules), _DC Heroes_ had it (two more modules, one Batman, one Superman). There were others. However, the assumption was and is that you play with others when it comes to TTRPGs. It’s neither a necessity nor a requirement. Over the years, solo play has been more of a thing as finding a group is hard or some people can only play when others cannot. Solo play is sometimes the only way to experience a game that you cannot get others to play. Some who have had that experience have commented on this video. The first _Mythic Gamemaster Emulator_, an agnostic solo system for any TTRPG, was released in 2006. It’s going on 20 years. 2nd Edition dropped last year in 2023. It’s been around for a good minute. 😊 So yes, I _prefer_ solo for myriad reasons (probably a separate video). It doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy playing in a group. If that was the case, I would not have been running one for the last six years. 😉

You cant play a ttrpg solo. It just turns it into a crappy watered down video games with zero graphics. Also, just because you play with other people doesn't mean you aren't an introvert.

Obviously, you can play one if there are scores of systems for it. You have no idea what it’s like and are just bringing troll vibes. Bring something substantial to the conversation in a lucid way or move on. I neither have the time nor the patience.

@@RPGElite Oh, there are a bunch of games that are called "solo" RPG's but they are not even remotely the same as your standard TTRPG. They feel more like creative writing tools than playing the actual game by yourself. The AI is getting ridiculously close to allowing you to pull it off though. I am not a troll, I don't live under a bridge nor do I express opinions that I don't actually have in order to annoy others. I do suppose "crappy" was a poor word choice though. However I still stand by me assertion. You can't play a TTRPG by yourself.

@@mkklassicmk3895 You can stand by it all day long and you'd be wrong. You can play a TTRPG by yourself. First thing, there is no standard TTRPG. Every TTRPG is different. There are TTRPGs that have basic elements and solo TTRPGs have them. There is no "standard". Respectfully, this is the kind of limited thinking and myopic viewpoint to TTRPGs that pigeonholes the art form and makes people think there's only one way to approach or think about them when there isn't. We're just going to disagree on this because there is nothing substantial that's been added to the exchange that won't be repeated. Do your thang, because you're going to anyway, and I will do mine. Peace.

You have a TTRPG channel but you prefer to play by yourself? RPGs were designed to be played with others. Most of my experience and the advice I give people is literally assuming you are playing with others. Like creativity and improvisation have like no weight context in a solo game. What is the point in telling yourself a story. I think this explains your disposition. I have seen a lot of your videos and you are kind of a downer and you like to say no a lot. lol. I don't think a lot of people could play with someone with this kind of attitude. I guess you playing by yourself is for the best.

You do not have to like my disposition. I’m not programmed like most. I do and think what I want. Not real sure why you keep coming back if I’m such a downer. Seems to me you would move on. Makes absolutely no sense. But that’s something else entirely. Passive trolling about my character when you don’t know jack and are absolutely wrong on top of it. Par for the course. Just move on. You’re not my audience.

Ah, but I get where he is coming from. I spent most of the first few years soloing the old red book (BECMI) stuff without even dice available. Some stories really don't need the 'peanut gallery' along for the ride. Plus, a lot of people out there are TOXIC in the gaming community. Those people are predators using gaming as a lure to pull in the vulnerable. Similar to that guy with his 'roofies' at the dance club. Too many gamers are actually already vulnerable people. There is every good reason to steer clear and solo it. (I am lucky to have a good group, otherwise I did effectively quit gaming for about a decade or so.)
