God bless these parents. Having one or two children with the disorder, but 4 has got to be challenging.
@imonka100
@imonka100 3 года назад
I would not judge these parents for having all these kids. Their first two kids were healthy and these 4 kids were born pretty close one after another not giving these parents any idea something is wrong until the last one was born. Even if the oldest of these 4 affected kids showed signs of disability, I bet they would not expect all of them to have such issues as it is considered a rare syndrom.
@goombapizza6335
@goombapizza6335 Год назад
No frickin way, I disagree wholeheartedly. After my first kid with a genetic disorder, I'm either stopping having kids (especially if I already have two healthy ones) or I'm running right to a genetic counseling clinic to find out if I carry a mutation that will make it happen again. If they find something, I'm getting my tubes tied.

Well to be fair, they were born year-by-year, and Angelman diagnosis doesn't get apparent until year 1 or so. So it's well possible they already had second or perhaps even third child on the way when they found out about the first one. But the fourth child was a strange choice, yes.
@amnigma2342
@amnigma2342 4 года назад
It's a rare genetic disease that can only affect 1 in 12k to 20k. They wouldn't know that it would affect VERY SUCCEEDING children they have. Some people with Angelman syndrome have siblings that were born luckier than they were. You can't blame the parents for something they don't have control over.
@daniellemiller2547
@daniellemiller2547 4 года назад
@@amnigma2342 There is nothing wrong with desiring a large family but when you are aware of a genetic disease that may potentially occur again in one of your kids, it is your responsibility to not actively bring more children into the world. This disease is serious, why would you as a parent keep reproducing and subjecting your children to this. It's horrible.
@flxmkr

You’re absolutely right. Everyone should be born without disabilities. Also, they should be born with white skin, blonde hair and blue eyes. And as soon as they reach senior age, they should be taken to a wild forest and kissed “goodbye”. Sound familiar? What gives us the right to decide who should be born? Where do we draw the line? It’s ok to be born with intellectual disabilities as long as they’re pretty? Or perhaps they are savants who can play concert music, so we’ll let those live. What about all these tide pod swallowing, roof jumping kids who are obviously jumping from some expensive homes? Are they any different because they CHOOSE to act this way? Or because they were born into wealthy homes? Sheesh, people, everyone has irreplaceable value. These kids are happy. Ask the parents to choose one child and they wouldn’t be able to. They are all wonderful human beings. And kudos to the father who didn’t stereotypically grab his keys and coat as soon as the diagnoses was delivered. Why? Love! These parents look happy, and those kids are loving. It’s a wonderful family. But to answer your question, their first two kids were average. They didn’t know these kids would be born this way. But I’ll say one thing: if the parents thought the disease was so horrible, maybe they would’ve chosen to stop at the third. But it’s not our place to decide how many kids they should’ve had under any circumstances.

It's likely that both parents are carriers of the gene. and if that's the case, there's a 25% chance of them having children with this syndrome. I have a son with a similar syndrome and was told by genetics doctors that both myself and his father are carriers of the gene and that there's 1 in 4 chances of us having another child with the same syndrome. I know it's a year late but I hope that helps you understand.

There are more than one way the UBE3A gene can be defective. Usually it is through the deletion of a chunk of sequence in the chromosome 15. This is not inherited. But sometimes it is because the mother carries a POINT MUTATION. In this case, it may be inherited.

What is the likelihood of 4 of the kids having the same chromosomal disorder? This doesnt seem possible. And as far as the comments of this couple continuing to have kids despite the chromosomal disorders, I doubt the first two were even diagnosed in time, maybe they all weren't but this is certainly bizarre. I say the same thing about cystic fibrosis, which is inherited and totally different.

kittykatBflat's not being rude at all. kitty's being completely honest, and it's actually important that this is pointed out. These parents are whining, and they chose this. They chose to not only continue to have kids though there was a large chance of them being afflicted with something like this, but did it because *they* wanted a large family. So they can stop complaining about it. (I have a large, longer, more substantiated post about all of this is up above, in reply to burntham113's, which at the very top. I'm #3 under him. Just wrote it.)

@flxmkr
@flxmkr 4 года назад
thatonechickyousaw ok, but look at the job security they are providing to care givers. Besides, every one of us could wind up in an extended care facility. If we don’t get In an accident that could leave us paralyzed or brain injured, we could get Alzheimer’s or lose our legs to diabetes. It’s not fair to try to place guilt on parents who decided to conceive and/or not abort, just because their kids are more prone to live long lives. What if you discover you have the Alzheimer’s gene? Or diabetes? Can you be certain you won’t be dependent on long term care in your life? The only difference between those kids and us is we haven’t developed anything that requires long term care...yet. There’s still time.

They didn't know. Their first two kids weren't affected and the ones with AS were born pretty close together. A lot of people with AS don't get diagnosed for several years after birth. I would imagine none of them were diagnosed until all of them had already been born.
@thatonechickyousaw
@thatonechickyousaw 6 лет назад
Honestly, I have to completely agree. Bringing children into the world that are in pain, unable to truly communicate, and are going to suffer for the rest of their lives is absolutely irresponsible, and actually very selfish, cruel, and ridiculous. But mainly selfish and cruel. They knew something wasn't right with their third child. The parents themselves said that children with Angelman Syndrome are often misdiagnosed with other severe issues such as severe autism and/or cerebral palsy. Then their fourth was also born with the same "problems" (for lack of better word). So the parents continued *their* dream of having more children despite the fact that there seemed to be a *VERY* high likelihood of the following children having the same difficulties, where their kids are going to be suffering alone for their entire lives? (The parents themselves stated in this video that their children cannot communicate to tell them if they're in pain, have had nightmares, etc. So they go/suffer through all of these scary and hurtful things completely alone.) That is completely and utterly SELFISH. As for those who are going to claim that they had no clue what their children had, nor if their next children were going to have the same fate, gene therapy has been around for a very long time. It was VERY possible for them to have checked their genes for markers that would have resulted in disorders such as this. They could have even gotten their children's DNA checked to see if it was in their genes/DNA. But they chose not to. So, again, these two "parents" (I have to use this term loosely for these two, as they chose all of this and now whine that every day is a "challenge" for *them*. HONESTLY!?!?!), are SELFISH. Okay. Im finished now. I think. We'll see. lol
