I find that working on open office environments with coworkers who are very different from my own personality to be something that is very draining.
@JosephPLiu
@JosephPLiu 5 лет назад
I've worked in various open-office plan environments, and I hear what you're saying about how those environments can disproportionately affect your own emotions. It's hard for the energy and attitudes of other people we spend so much time with to NOT affect us.

No. 1 (mismatch btw my talent and tasks) is my biggest reason, which is naturally followed by no. 3 (draining) because I put in a lot more effort than anyone else to get the average result.

This is my weekly topic for my own subscribers. One thing that can really bring a person into depression is 40 hours a week of hating their job. The job is literally almost half of the waking life. The problem many people have is that they have a craving for security. The person will tolerate being unhappy if that is their normality. People would rather have secure bitterness than the fear of stepping off the cliff. The fact is that you can change your career anytime. At 40 or 50. I once knew a car salesman of 30 years who did really well but started to hate his job--so became a nurse at 57. He is now a travel contractor. His friends told him he would be 57 by the time he got licensed as an RN. He told them he would be 57 anyway. So he will now spend the next ten years doing something he likes instead of something he hates. But you have to decide if it is life on the sea you hate or just that ship you're traveling on. In other words--do you hate your trade or just the company you're at? But whatever you aren't happy with you must change and continue to advance yourself. Hope this helps someone---Charles.

I'm afraid feel the same in another job
@JosephPLiu
@JosephPLiu 4 года назад
Mari, this is always the challenge with these things--wondering if the issue is "you" rather than the job itself. The only way to truly know is to test the waters in another environment to see if your issues follow you. If they do, maybe you have to rethink your approach or attitude. But if they don't, you may discover you were just in the wrong place.

This is what I feel since I started working. I finished business course but it feels like I am in a wrong path. I am not happy in whatever accounting job I handle though the working environment is friendly. I recently realized this is really not for me. And I guess if I do nothing with this situation, I'll probably end up regretting too late someday. I am trying to change career this year. Hope to finally find where I fit in 😊

I did a career change about half a year ago. I was quite surprised since I ticked all four boxes and realized today that I was did the right decision before. I was so afraid at first, but ended up enjoying and find my worth more in my current job. And btw, I'm from medical science too! But I am currently in sales now. 😊

It's interesting because our jobs in our careers can often become fully intertwined with our entire identity. So walking away from a great company it's not just about saying goodbye to a job. It's about saying goodbye to your identity, the predictability you may have gotten so used to, and the stability that this job has offered you over the years. It's completely normal to feel a bit lost about what to do next.

This was helpful and eye opening. I definitely want to change careers because of a mismatch between my skills and what I do. I have attention deficit disorder so it’s hard to pay attention to detail and I accepted a job offer as an accountant which is very demanding in terms of paying attention to detail. I have to work twice as hard just to be average and I’m scolded for taking a long time to review my work. Not sure what I’ll change to but I know I have to change

I'm really happy to hear you found this video helpful. We all make mistakes sometimes when it comes to accepting a job offer. There are all sorts of pressures or life circumstances that can lead us to take a role that's actually not the best fit for us. The good news is that it sounds like you've determined you're not in the right job. Now, you just have to decide if and when to explore other paths that may align more with your strengths and interests.

I have a degree in Information Technology and an aspiring sysadmin but is stuck for 9 years in customer service, and will turn 30 this year. I feel really frustrated because I did not utilize my degree in my current work. Also this strikes the "I am not good enough" sentiment, that it is too late for myself to be in IT because I am too old for this, and wasted my 20s in a dead-end job that I really don't like.

This sometimes happens where are you leave one poor situation behind only to eventually land in a similarly dissatisfying situation. My suggestion is to try to pinpoint exactly what is causing the dissatisfaction to help inform your next move. Hopefully, gaining some clarity on what's really important to you can help you make a change that sends your career in a better direction.

I'm a truck driver and I am not very good. I've been driving for 6 months and it I'm really bad. Everyone else can back into spaces easily and I constantly struggle to. Everyone can drive better at the speed limit and I can't. My supervisor told me a couple of times I came back kinda late. I wish I was good at what I did but the reality is I'm no good at nothing. I'm 37. Too old to start another career and be good at it.
@JosephPLiu
@JosephPLiu 4 года назад
I'm sure that it's not true that you're "no good at nothing." We all have strengths and weaknesses. We're all better and worse at some things than others. For example, I'm 100% certain you're a better truck driver than I am. I can't even drive a stick shift. I'm also 100% certain you're good at certain things that I'm not good at. I've been in situations myself when I feel like I'm "not as good" as others at doing things, which is never a great feeling. Even if true, what I've also come to realize is that when I've been misplaced in the wrong job--my natural skills and strengths weren't any use in that wrong environment. I wonder if there might be a job where your skills or strengths could be better used, where they could more naturally shine?

Every job is the same. Where ever you work.. Its called work and work by its nature is bad for the human soul. Why do you think governments use unpaid work as punishment? You have probably got a chance if you work for yourself and its a real passion,but then it's not really work it's getting money for enjoying yourself. That would be a dream and for 99.99999 percent of people work is a daily grind which just about puts enough on the table for them to eat. Most peoples lives are actually hell and not worth living,thing is your born into this world with no choice.
@JosephPLiu
@JosephPLiu 3 года назад
Dave, I can understand how someone might hold the views you do, and it's a completely valid perspective, especially since the vast majority of employees (at least according to Gallup's most recent State of the Global Workplace poll surveying 150+ countries) are disengaged with their work. I've been there myself. However, just to share another perspective on it, I know both self-employed and full-time employed people who really do enjoy their professional lives. I really do believe that pursuing work you find more meaningful is a possible path, but the feasibility of pursuing that path absolutely depends on your individuals circumstances.
@JosephPLiu

Ti, well, it's actually been about 3 years since I posted a video to RU-vid! That's mainly driven by other competing demands in my life, but I do hope my existing library of content here has been helpful to those who visit my channel. I don't tend to veer into the topic of politics on this channel, but it is very much the case that a large number of people out there are dissatisfied with the current state of affairs.

What about low salary??
@JosephPLiu
@JosephPLiu 6 лет назад
Definitely. If salary is important to you, and you feel you're not getting an adequate level of compensation, that's definitely a sign you may not be in the right place for you. I think anytime one of your priorities isn't being met, whether salary or other aspects of your job, that's going to create dissatisfaction.
