Hello, I’ve have horsetail which has come into my garden from a neighbour who has given up. It is in the lawn and in my flower border. The soil is in poor condition and is dry because I have mature magnolia trees and it is in the shade. I want to develop a shade border. Currently it is very difficult to plant in the garden and I can’t tell if it is the horsetail or magnolia root which is causing this. Listening to your advice I was going to cardboard the back of the border and cover with mulch and in the front where I want to plant improve the soil with manure and then mulch. Is this a good idea? Should I attempt planting at the moment or should I put the plants into pots? Because of pets I really do not want to use chemicals but I want to not let it get any worse and start affecting more of the garden. Help and thank you for making such an informative video 😊.

Yes i think thats a good idea. Mulching will help improve the soil and add nutrient's back if the tree is taking up a lot. It will also help tame the horsetail, though unfortunately, horsetail is very persistent so if it starts to grow through the mulch try and weed it out as much as possible. Weeding and mulch will help weaken those deep roots. Good luck xx

Great video thanks so much. I took on a neglected allotment last year. The horsetail drove me mad. However this year I have worked on being patient. I want organic growing so didn't want to use a weed killer. I am also doing no dig. So thanks for your balanced suggestions and approach to dealing with this problem. Fab....

I've had a very similar story to you, and I eventually learned to stop fighting it, and appreciating it as an endless source of biomass. I do pull it but without the dread I used to have in seeing it. It composts down beautifully, zero regrowth. I actually just chop and drop it on the beds.

This gives me a lot of hope, ive put in so much effort into the cardboard and no dig this year after fighting the horsetail by hand for almost three years. I have hope that it will be more manageable now ❤

I'm glad its given you new hope. The cardboard definitely slows the process growth and makes it easier to pull what does come through. The more you do it the better it gets. Don't give up.

It can be so disheartening when you see it all growing up and so quickly. But keep at it, every year it will get better.

A lot of (especially USA) sites recommend lime addition to make the PH higher which horsetail does not like. I'll be trying that this year on new plot, along with your tactics.

That's interesting, I haven't tried the lime technique but would love to hear how it goes. Using multiple methods to tackle horsetail is definitely the best way. It's persistent stuff. Good luck

Could you do a 3 layer approach on some bits? Like putting weed membrane down, then cover with woodchip and top it off with bark or is that overkill?
@livinggreen9095
@livinggreen9095 3 месяца назад
You could absolutely do 3 layers and I have done in the past, though if your going to do this put your weed membrane on top. So you would have to do it on a section your planning to leave covered. I say this because the weed membrane can start to break apart when covered and its a nightmare to get out afterward. But if you cardboard, wood chip, and then cover, in a year you will have some lovely soil underneath and have a good head start on those weeds. Hope that helps x

@@livinggreen9095 Thankyou so much for replying. I did not think you would. So are you saying I could put dow cardboard? then weed membrane and then bark?
@livinggreen9095
@livinggreen9095 3 месяца назад
No problem sorry for the late reply. No I would put the weed membrane on the very top so unfortunately that would mean you couldn’t plant into it just yet. Charles dowding does a method of covering for a year so everything dies underneath and it leaves you with a blank canvas. Although some horsetail will still try and survive but it does give you a really good head start. It’s a good method if you have a big area so you could cover half with weed membrane and then just cardboard and wood chip the rest for planting. Makes it a bit more manageable. Putting cardboard and wood chip under the weed membrane would give the soil a good health boost while it is covered.

@@livinggreen9095 Sorry for late reply, but just wondering...dos the carboard not get all soggy underneath as well?
@livinggreen9095
@livinggreen9095 23 дня назад
@@foghornfilms yes it does but that's fine it will break down and feed the soil and as it's underneath the wood chip you won't notice it. Some people if they live in warmer climates water the cardboard before adding the mulch to help the breaking down process along.

What about if you're idle and don't want to put in the effort?
@livinggreen9095
@livinggreen9095 5 месяцев назад
I'm afraid the bad news is horsetail will take over when your ideal, however, I do find it easier to pull the bigger it is so I don't fret too much when I see some areas I've neglected getting a bit too tall.

DONT TAKE AN ALLOTMENT IF YOU DONT WANT THE WORK Kertail weedkiller is useless it says it kills it but it doesn't.
