"You get one lifetime as far as playing and enjoying your instrument and playing what other people think you should be playing is a waste of time" -RodneyMcG

Hello from Russia, a great video, but I think it's worth mentioning one more thing. I have been playing only 6 string basses all my life, even the first instrument was a 6 string. There is another reason. As part of my musical activity, I need to play a lot of different music, jazz in the E Standard in the orchestra, different covers in the D or B standard and play with my group in the drop G #. Retune your instrument every time would be just hell, especially for a very low tuning I would have to have a separate set of strings. Therefore, I just bought a 6-string and I can everything on it. Besides, the same note has a different timbre on different strings, for example, if I want to get a more transparent and bright sound, I will play the F note on the 5th string, and if I want to get a lower sound, thicker, I will play note F on the 6th string. Thanks to the presence of six strings, I can choose which sound I want to play one and the same note. Sorry in advance for bad English, I hope the translator conveyed my idea.

Your English is great! Greeting from Los Angeles! That's a great piece of experience you shared. Again, one isn't better than the other. You should choose what is right for you, and 6 string does exactly what you want. It's awesome that you found your home right away.

The second half of this video really hit home for me... So much time wasted doing what other people said I needed to do for my keyboard/synth playing, the way that I would make beats, and even now with learning the bass guitar it's happening again. So much has my own personal sound been corrupted by others and then feeling like the mojo wasn't there anymore... Time to burn all that out and get back to what made me want to be a musician in the first place and only focus on the music I hear in my head not the music people think they want to hear. Man, so much time wasted... This Video was exactly what I needed

My first bass was a 4 string, but pretty soon I was wanting to get into those lower notes in my own recordings and compositions. So I moved up to a 5 string. Now that is the only bass I can play. By the way, I'm primarily a guitar player.

Maaaan, i love the what you said about 4 string feeling like ferrari. Like thats the thing i tried to explain my bandmates recently, like i 5 just feels chunky, and adds so many problems and all the position changes, even when i was playing 5 i found myself shifting more and barely using low B string. I'd rather detune my 4 to B, just feels like home and milion times more comfortable. Again as you said, if you can get what you need with less strings, then 4 is more than enough for me

Every budding musician needs to listen to Rodney McG's advice, metal or not, bassist or not! The 2nd half of this video was SO motivational! This message is exactly what I needed to hear! Don't let anyone tell you how to rock! Now, I'm going to stop what I'm doing and to play some Ray Charles! My favorite other takeaway is that you burn more calories with less strings. I'm downgrading to a one strings bass!

Man, your discussions, and you whole damn channel are just so on point!! I am really impressed by your insight, and will hopefully keep learning from you for a long time yet. From a numbers point of view, a 4 string bass low E has a fundamental of around 40hz-ish, and there is always a bit of sub-harmonic rumble, so theoretically, a 4 string bass can give you all the "bass" you will ever need. Just don't let the processing thin out those low frequencies. Whilst I am predominantly a guitarist / pianist, I do love playing bass too. Funny thing is, when I was playing on a 7 string + 5 string bass, I found myself mostly riffing on the lowest string (Drop A for me) and the bass just became an extension of the guitar, just adding a lower octave and copying the guitar riff. I practically ignored the rest of the strings. But since I got an 8 string guitar tuned to Drop E, I actually took the 5th string off my Dingwall and I tell you what man... It was amazing. I felt like I was playing bass again, for the first time in years. I was actually popping, slapping, tapping, and actually playing finger style, remembering old bass riffs I made years ago. I enjoyed it so much that I am going to sell my 5 string and get a 4 again. Thanks for the awesome discussions. Looking forward to each new video.

I'm mostly into symphonic/folk/fantasy style metal. I've been working with Rodney on learning to play and i'm coming along. I've been playing a 5 and have a 6 on order. I find the more I play, the more difficulty I have in the high register with close frets. I have nerve damage and cannot feel the fingers in my left hand. Playing the low register with a wide finger stretch is far more comfortable for me. Perhaps the 6 is just a *more dollars than sense* purchase, but if it allows me to play more comfortably, it will be worth it. As for not learning other styles, I've really never wanted to play anything other than metal. Maybe learn how to slap some day.

as always, great episode! I started with a 4 string, and then I wound up in a band where 7 string guitars was the norm - I thought about re-tuning the old Hohner PJ Bass I had at the time, but there was also one aspect: filing down the nut to accommodate the thicker B string - I ended up buying a Schecter 5-String and it's still being with me to this day! Stays in tune after 12 years :D - and that introduced me to this cool brand (and btw I stumbled on to your channel because I was looking for a good review for the SLS Elite basses - now I have the Evil Twin version :D) - and besides that, found a channel that fills a much needed gap in the world of bass! - Regarding the second point with playing what you like, yeah - I have good examples and bad - the good version was that I was invited to play in a band witha goth-symphonic style - wasn't that much of a fan, but I did not dislike it either - wound up getting to know some amazing people, and although the band doesn't exist anymore, we still are good friends after playing, touring, recording together :) - the bad example, actually I avoided playing in a folk-metal band, because I thought that while getting some good gigs and tours meant also jumping around in costumes that I wasn't really a fan of - and at that time, I thought of the other members - would they be the best band they can be if I am not giving it my everything? So yeah, definitely, keep that road in front of you with the music you enjoy - sometimes you can find also nice surprises on the side, but know them! Have an amazing week and looking forward to more videos! :) Cheers!

There is some very strong advice about not wasting your time playing unsatisfying music. I played with a guitarist who was constantly trying to get me to "expand my horizons" but his examples that he insisted I learn were things I couldn't even stand to listen to. It really made playing with the dude a chore, which sucks because he was what I thought of as a good friend. Our drummer ended up going back to prison for sales but my guitarist "friend" blamed me for the band breaking up because I "refused to compromise".

Hey Trevor, hopefully getting back to work is a good thing for you, best of luck with that. I do remember you talking about a 5, and it's a question I get a lot. I definitely wanted to bring it up as I think a lot of bassist especially in metal grab one out of obligation, or get shamed about down tuning and don't wind up with the bass they really want. Hope that info helps out a bit. Be well.

Another awesome video. When I first saw the topic I thought I'd be fighting you on it but ended up agreeing with everything you said. I prefer a 4 string.. All my basses are 4 strings. It's what I started out with and what I like. I like the way it feels in my hands. Like you said there is something sexy about a 4 string.. Besides the greatest songs in rock history are all played on a 4 string. All my idols use 4 strings. And I picked up the bass to play rock and metal and that's it. I only like those two genres. I'm very narrow minded when it comes to music. People tell me to expand my mind but I don't want too. I'm happiest when I'm playing and listening to metal. I'm a true metalhead and that's the way I want to live my life. Anyways I'm loving this channel keep up the good content!

Couldn't agree more. I always said "there's music that i like to listen to, and there''s music that i like to play". I listen to a lot of music, but when it comes to play, i like thrash metal. So my skills all revolve around getting a good, snappy, and thrashy performance. Of course i try to learn things outside the box and incorporate them. Love this channel. I went through a really big Black Sabbath phase early in my bass playing and for the longest time I had to consciously force myself to not play bluesy stuff. That D -> E -> G -> A pentatonic NIB/Paranoid lick was my go to when I couldn't think of anything even when it didn't sound right. Then I got big into old school death metal like Bolt Thrower and found myself squeezing World Eater into everything. As I got older, I figured out how to absorb influences without letting them take over my playing.

I play fretless. While I love my 4 string Fender Jazz Fretless fast neck, a 5 or 6 string is very helpful. Position changes are a big opportunity for intonation to go belly up. I don't find the high C all that useful playing supporting bass lines, but the low B is great. I hardly ever play the really low notes below normal low E, but it's great to have the notes normally only on the E available up the neck. It also helps avoid longer stretches, which are another way for intonation to get off. Muting needs to be really solid, though. I put a FretWraps at the nut just to help deal with any stray notes.

Hi Rodney awesome video! thx for sharing I totally agree with you. I remember what one of my teachers told me 5 years ago when I started learning jazz. He said "hey you're not a jazz player and not even a rocker, you're a metal player. Why are you trying to sound like Jaco if what's in your head sounds like Megadeth?" And he was completely right. But I felt in love with jazz by listening, playing and studying. Now I live between two different worlds, I left my band a few months ago after the record session of the album (haven't play since then) because I want to stay in that frontier. And it's SO difficult to find people who really want to expand their limits... Love ur channel man!

I used to do that for most of the lower tuned music i was learning in the past. I always used the low four off of a 5 string set. The only reason i purchased a 5 string is because it was impossible to tune those strings back to standard tuning with the higher gauges. Another great video Rodney. Much obliged!

Really solid pieces of sound advice. Couldn't agree more. Keep on the good work! My story on this point is that I once played bass in a sort of noise rock and hardcore influenced math rock band, together with some old friends that I previously had created music together with for years in another constellation, however I eventually ended up quitting that band, after a couple of years of playing with them, with a single, an EP and some minor gigs behind us, because I all along had felt somewhat out of place playing that kind of music, but only to much later discover how much I actually enjoyed playing that stuff and how much I actually loved the music we created together, much regretting my decision to quit, and on top of that making me miss out on the opportunity to play at the biggest rock festival of Scandinavia, though the latter not really a major reason for my regret. And here comes how the above story relates to your point, even if seemingly contradicting it : I can now see retrospectively that I was pretty mentally messed up and depressed at that time in my life, which I blame for my bad judgement, in that what I thought was me getting no enjoyment from playing that kind of music and feeling out of place doing so was really me feeling no joy and out of place in life in general, so even if my story is kind of the reverse of yours it does still lead up to your main point about the importance of keeping yourself aware of how you truly feel and pursue that accordingly, I just simply wasn't capable of that at that point in my life, which naturally also led to bad decisions regarding my musical life.
@RodneyMcG

Thanks a lot for sharing that. It can be a really tough road at times. It's true - getting real clarity on where you are with things can be difficult. Without going too philosophical, I've followed a regimen of introspection and self awareness for a long while. It's paid off in knowing why I want and do the things I do, so I can make more accurate judgements. I hope you are able to refocus and pursue the things you really enjoy again going forward. So much to agree with here. At 51, the cost of my time seems like such a bigger deal now. I made the jump from 4 to 6 in 2013 because I am a prog guy and I only wanted to make the switch once. I have access to a 4 string but I even play 4 string stuff (Rush, Maiden) on the 6 to build my muscle memory on it. I'm a huge Fates Waring fan, like a lot of DT and Symphony X but a lot of it can get waaaay too wankery.

Yeah, i got into the stuff (Later Era prog) and even played in a band that did pretty well in the style. Played, 6, then 7. It wasn't even the technical part that I got tired of. I still love shred, and all that. I finally realized that what I really loved about hard rock and metal was the aggression and wildness. Prog was absent that for me, and I had to go back to the inspirations that I first had. Not slamming it at all. I have total respect for what those guys do. But for me, when i think about what makes me reach for the volume knob and start shouting a long, it's when I hear the Aggro! Everybody has their thing!

I also play with my fingers and not with a pic. I dont slap or use tapping but I love playing chords and found that with that knowlege I could actually compose on bass. I want to master or get better on what I've got and love the idea of getting more out of less. Its fun to try to work around the limitations and I love the expressive quality of the fretless. I also love using ghost notes and sliding harmonics much like Percy Jones. With that said I listen to and get influenced by all kinds of bassist from Ron Carter to Victor Wooten. Im not much of a metal fan but respect anyone thats good at their craft.

Bass should really be the backbone of the creativity, if your “sound” or “focus” is “downtuned” then so should your bass be, if you just want to be able to get to low notes occasionally (jazz/rock/etc) then choose a 5 string and stay in standard tuning. NOW!..There’s those of you who are both downtuned artists who also want the low notes and that sends you shopping for a 5 string in C# with a low G# or lower (this is where choosing a 4 or 5 string becomes truly difficult haha). Another option is standard 4 string but using software to downtune, a lot of metal bands are doing this now. Bands such as sleep token etc. 🤘🏻🤘🏻

For me, 5 string basses just make the most sense. I play mainly in E and B standard and having one bass that can do both it just makes switching between differently tuned songs easier. And even if I do play in drop D, I can just ignore the low B and play it like a 4. I also like to use chords and because of that I’m thinking about moving to a 6, but I don’t know if I’ll actually use all the strings.

Lifelong metalhead here. I LOVE funk, especially James Brown. I have put a lot more time into funk than metal over the last year and a half and I an a much better player because of it. As a metal bassist it's easy to fall into the trap of playing notes to fill in space. Learning funk taught me that I had formed a bad habit over the years and that was believing that I had to fill all of the space with notes. Sitting in the pocket and grooving and learning how to get behind the beat,etc. is more important than all the tapping and fancy fills in the world. Metal bassists tend to chase the guitars or become essentially another guitar as flashy tapping on fretless basses at 300 BPM becomes the norm in metal. It was refreshing to get into the traditional role as part of the rrhythm section. I learned that I was playing too much and that sometimes sitting back and thumping on the root is what works best for the song .

I started off playing both a 4 string and a 5 string at the same time. The school had a 4 string, i picked up a 5 string for my home practise. In the 1990's the 5 string bass was still "NEW". Learning muting was more challenging at first, but it was well worth it. I now have both a 4 and 5 string bass and enjoy playing either. It really depends on my mood which one gets used. Or if one is being tinkered with and I am waiting for parts, then I use the other one :) I agree with your statements about, choose the kind of bass for the enjoyment of it, not for the how it looks or how it is perceived to be used. And play the kind of things that you enjoy. Life is too short to not sound like you!

I think your range, rather than pitch, is more of a defining factor as to how many strings you play. I agree with you on tuning down a 4 string for lower tunings - I've owned a 5 string for some time but for all gigs I've always used a downtuned 4 string as it just felt better. I grab the 5 when I want the note coverage in standard tuning.

I owned three 4-string basses (one fretted, one fretless and an acoustic fretless). Because of the idea to play more horizontal and need less position changes I sold the three basses to get one very good 5-stringed one (a fender preci standard). Then it took a very long time to accomodate to the odd string spacing, the much broader neck and the adittional string. I didn't expect before that the accomodation for me is that hard and will take nearly 10 month. Maybe it was so hard and took so much time because I play other instruments too (violin, classical guitar, double bass and singing) and don't play e-bass daily. For me that switch from 4 to 5 strings was actually harder than the beginning with the double bass. The idea to play more horizontal than vertical and make less position changes turned out to be very bad idea, because the B-string sound is so different and the sound is most of the time not the wanted sound. So I had to change as much positions like with a 4-string and didn't use the B-string a lot. I almost changed back to 4-string. But because of my (now ten years old) son started to learn drums and developed a preference for metal music, I began to hear more and more metal myself an like it. Then I was glad to have a 5-string because I don't like to change tunings a lot and now I began to really use the B-string because of the additional range to the depth. And now I ordered as a christmas present for myself a second 5-string with activ electronics for drop-tunings (with the B tune down to deep A) and normal round wound strings (because my passive fender preci is with flat strings which I furthermore need for jazz and reggae stuff). So thats my long story from changing from 4 string to 5 string with almost give it up, but at the end stick to the 5 string because of late discovered love for metal and lazyness to change strings and tunings on only one bass very often. If I had known how hard and long the accomodation to 5-string would be for me, I would have been stick to 4-strings and buy one extra-bass for metal down tunings with BEAD-strings on it.

But I'm not in a band these days, so if I want to grab a different one for a given song, I have the luxury of doing that. I often try different instruments on the same song just to see what happens. How does a Jazz with flats sound on "Enter Sandman"? What about an ESP Ltd 5? That's what I'm enjoying these days. Interesting to hear your music college experience. From the popularity of other bass teaching channels it’s hard not to feel like fusion players must get all the gigs but I guess it’s harder to make videos on everything else that gets the gig which is mostly not playing. I mainly play 5’s most of the time. Some times it’s easier for a 4 to sit better in a mix. It’s hard to tell if it’s the 4 having less wood in the body and neck or that 5 string pickups never sound the same as 4 sting equivalents.

I think anyone is going to push what they play to be the pinnacle of accomplishment. It's easy to be mislead. You never know what the magic combo is for a bass. I have some 4s that sound great, and others that my 5s blow away. It's one of those pieces of bass voodoo I don't think we'll ever solve!

Hello, there. I played 4 and 6 string for a bit, but 5 is where I feel at home and I switched to it, not only because of Low B, but because it lets me go to low notes, even when I go above seventh fret and if someone calls for blues in F, or a singer wants to sing a song in E flat, boom, there it is .I do not like detuning, Covers of old songs (jmostly non metal, but I like Nightwish, Within temptation and stuff like that) are what I mostly play and record. I will say that I agree with what is said in the video, I would like to learn new techniques, like tapping or machine gun like slapping, but I do not have use for such things in music I (like to) play and make, so I should not bother. One should play whatever he or she wants, and, as the old song says, nothing else matters.

My issue at the moment is I wonder if I SHOULD(deserve to) play 5’s, and should maybe switch back to 4’s(some BEAD). I have some really nice ones too(PRS GG5), but mostly purchased used. I did start on a 4, but quickly moved to 5’s because I came up in the beginning of Nu-Metal, as well as majority of my influences play mainly 5’s. Plus, the whole geometry of “drop tuning a bass to BEAD” was newly steeped in mysticism, and only for rockstars. Lol! I feel that the ONLY reason I wouldn’t switch back is the cover scene, and being flexible with what tunes are played. As much as I’d love to just add to my collection, I’m not very “well to do” with cash flow. So, selling/trading would be the only conversion/way back to 4’s. Any insight would be appreciated.

I don't think there is a "deserve" in any way. You deserve to play whatever you want. If you may need a 5 for other genres, that totally makes sense and is the right tool for the right job. Again, my point wasn't to tell anyone they shouldn't be playing what they like, or need. It was just to say that the most practical approach will usually be the best.

I noticed I like the feel of the neck better and I can still use the B string especially starting at the 5 fret in E like you mentioned and of course other keys. E and G are a very popular key in Metal. I was playing the N.I.B intro solo and I noticed I was hitting the E note on the B string and it sounded great. I think if it was popular back in the 70's and 80's more metal bassists would have used it.

Dude I totally get what you mean about prog, for my money it is complete and utter brilliance but bores the absolute hell out of me. And like you with the exception some of songs here and there, due to those songs in particular have great hooks thrown it. I just can’t immerse myself in it. Last prog band who songs I enjoyed is a band called Allegaeon, they’re very technical but they keep to song structuring that I don’t get bored with and use hooks blended with their technical abilities to keep it from entirely becoming a mathematical equation. It even dawned on me recently that Overkill’s Horrorscope album is a little progressive in nature. I wouldn’t call it a prog album but when put next to Taking Over or any of the albums that proceeded it, the songs are definitely progressive in how they’re structured and executed. Again I’m no prog guy but that is my fave album of theirs. Given I’m an 80’s kid I still enjoy some of the 80’s pop stuff and feel it has more depth than some of today’s pop music. Massive difference in soundscapes between then and now for sure. If you haven’t heard it, I highly recommend a metal album from last year by a band Beast In Black called From Hell With Love. Basically it’s melodic power metal fused with 80’s pop, but fused tastefully and not just over the top for the sake of it. Seriously, if you’re a metal guy that digs even just a little 80’s pop you must hear this. I haven’t stopped listening to it, the hooks are that infectious. Honestly I thought that the pop element would dilute the metal element and it would all just sound watered down, I was so happy that I was completely wrong. And the Rocky 4 theme cover is just pure gold 👌 Hope everyone is well and keeping safe 🤘

Hey Geo - It's never too late to make a change! I would definitely tune down the whole instrument. Just doing the one string would throw off your ability to play your music the way you are used to, and your scales would be wrecked. I think the best idea would be to play 4 detuned for a week and see how you feel at the end of it. If it fells more fun and like you're not missing anything, go for it. If you feel like you're missing something, stick with your 5. It should show the right answer pretty quickly. Hope that helps.

I really want to get a 5 string to keep in standard BEADG tuning, and then permanently drop my 4 string down to D standard. That combined with my Digitech drop pedal (LOVE that thing!) will pretty much allow me to grab either instrument and play any song I want to learn in any tuning. Also, totally agree about playing what you actually like! Not bass obviously, but played woodwinds for 14 years from elementary school through college. Overall I enjoyed it, but I'd say about 75-80% of everything we played wasn't really my cup of tea. You can still have fun playing stuff you wouldn't listen to otherwise, but it does wear you down. And of course, there's nothing you can really do about that situation because you're pretty much at the mercy of what the band director wants you to perform. I totally quit playing when I got into grad school which I always told myself was because I didn't have time anymore (which was true), but it was also really because I was tired of it. Picking up bass a couple years ago really re-kindled things for me for music. Really wish I'd done that years ago now.

@@RodneyMcG If you do pick up the Digitech, I think I mentioned this on another thread that my experience is that it works great to go down anywhere from 1-3 half steps on my bass. I've been playing Master of Reality stuff in C# that way and it sounds pretty good! Any further and it gets really weird, digital-sounding, and muddy. Even though I can play BEAD songs that way, it's pretty tough listening and playing. I'm guessing it works better for guitar for the other possibilities. It'll go 7 half steps down, then jump to a full octave down, and also has an octave setting where you get unaffected and octave down harmonized. I think there are more expensive options for this via a Helix and such, but for what you get for the price, can't beat that Digitech pedal.

@@Mike_LaFontaine75 As long as I don't drop more than 3 half steps down, it works great for me. Mind you, it does effect your tone a bit, and you might need to play with order of compression and use some EQ to compensate. All the rest of the settings mostly suck for bass. I was initially hoping I could use it to take me all the way down to B standard, but it really sounds like digital muddy garbage that way. The one thing that's kind of cool is the octave setting whereby you get the unaffected signal doubled with octave down. Gives a neat effect when you play on the higher frets, but obviously it's muddy garbage for low notes. I suspect all the other stuff works much better for a regular guitar.

I have been playing bass for 15 years. I played 4 for years, and a 5 string for the last 3 or 4. I love 5 string, I love extended range, more hand positions, easier octaves, and honestly, changing my tuning a lot. I generally play in standard, but I love using ADADG tuning (plus it lets me mix well with a drop D guitar and acts as my ass backwards dadgad). It depends too, most things metal, I want that heavy down tune. If I play a pop song, it is staying in standard. Muting the B string never felt to weird, but I also palm mute a lot, and doing breakdowns, finger muting isn't much. Lowest I would go on a 4 string is probably drop C (I love the punch and heaviness), and probably lowest on a 5 string is maybe drop A so I stay in the normal listening range. I feel like starting 4 is good, gives you the basics if you want extended range, but honestly, if you don't need the range, a 4 will do more than fine and pretty. I just can't get away from that low B and where I can take it. As goofy as it sounds, if someone wants to somewhat know what a 6 string or having the high note is like, put a capo on your 4th fret so you are in the same tuning.

Back when I was starting out it was really hard finding any band that played hard rock/metal in my area. When I did, the band usually had only 1 guitarist so I needed to fill space during solos otherwise the whole thing dropped out. Being a big Geezer fan, I tried filling the space with lots of notes which worked well. I also started tapping (it WAS the 80s) and using chords. I finally found a cheap 5 string which were just becoming popular, and tuned it EADGC not knowing better (plus a c string was easier to find back then than a big fat string) The tuning was great for what I needed at the time. I'm so used to it that I stuck with it, and all my basses are 5s tuned this way. Every time I mention this to bassists I get "that's useless, why do you even play bass?" and this usually comes from a bass player that thumps away on their B neglecting all the other strings. This silly tuning, along with my ridiculous rig, works for me. Have fun, thanks for all you do for metal bass.

Hi Rod. My grant of salt in the subject of playing a 5/6 string bass, is that the instrument should serve to the musical context of the band/genere. I mean, what could be the purpose of using a 5/6/7/8 string bass to play pure "mariachi"/country music??? I knew some people back in the day, who owned a 5/6 just to "show off" how "virtuoso" they were...but playing the thing as a 4 string bass, in music suited for a 4 string bass😒

I got my first bass in 1986, and I still remember those, then old, dudes at some music stores who would come up with their annoying, and snobish advice "If you want to learn to play, you have to listen to jazz". I tried to listen to jazz for a while, but I just don't like it at all. Another "piece of advice" that was very comon back then was: "bass guitars ought to be played by using fingers only" . I´m 53, and still playing good old Thrash Metal (I use a pick when play). I have 4 bass guitars, all of them 4 stringers. I tried 5 strings for a while (Drop A), but didn't really like it. Since my band is tuned in standard E, and my hands are kind of small, the extra string didn´t make much sense to me.

Usually 5 or 6 strings is more suited towards metal thats my cup of tea. I choose 5 string coming from a 4 because I'll have more options for producing notes and much more creativity.
@edwardbrown561
@edwardbrown561 2 года назад
Ive played 4 for years, Im like you I just make it work, but I never de tuned, for me de tuning, unless thats where the bass sits ALL the time, is going to tear up your nutt and possibly effect your action, also this happens if you run de tuned, get larger guage strings without caring for again, the nutt, and force a larger string. For me to get the lower notes, or tones really, I invested in a few real nice octave pedals and learned how to get the best out of them. Analog works the best for me, Octabvre, Sub Blaster and Broughtons SVD all get me low enough. But curiosity got the best of me as I just bought my first Warwick 5.. really can't use my octaves for the B string, and I simply can't move around the 5 as fast (yet), but the point Im making is you can tune down, you can use octave (pedal) down, but there simply isnt a replacement for a B played on the "proper" guage string, the hz it produces is un touchable. Hopefully I can get just as proficient on the 5 as the 4, Im getting there but its difficult
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 2 года назад
There's no such thing as a proper gauge string. If there were, there would only be one type available. Different gauges for different styles, techniques and tones. I've also never seen a string change actually destroy a nut. This is coming from someone who's worked on several thousand guitars in their lifetime and has been a tech for multiple guitar companies.

I suppose if your using a bass to play exclusively heavy metal you could just string it with a set of strings for a 5 string and lose the G string, after all you don't really need the higher notes anyway and using detuned strings never sound or control as good.

It's all what your particular situation calls for. I use 5 and 6 a lot and use all the additional strings. And I actually like the sound and feel of detuned strings. It depends greatly on the tension of your particular favorite strings.

@@RodneyMcG Soo, attempt to comment number two... :D I. Spy. Red. BIRD! Will you let it out of the cage anytime soon, Rodney? :) Got my first 5-string when I was 16, mostly because I liked how it looked :) It was a cheap Chinese Ibanez knock-off (made under the brand Invasion, but the shape was identical to Ibanez) with two J pickups that hummed like hell, frets scraped your hand, but it still was better than my first bass (Soviet time semiacoustic that was probably meant to stop American tanks in a melee than to make music with it :D). I spent the next five years playing that 5-string (symbolic, eh?) until I got a decent job and started upgrading my arsenal with a better axe... and another one... and this one, too... :D In the end I sold that 5-string to a local dude, and was quite happy with it. He probably wasn't, but who cares :D Come autumn 2018, the band that I was playing in started to write more and more songs in Drop D tuning, and as I got a bit tired of downtuning the 4th string all the time, I got myself another 5-string bass, white Indonesian Jackson CBXNT, and transposed all my parts accordingly. Long story short it did not work out as I expected, some parts became a pain below the back (and a literal pain in the left hand occasionally) to play live, the neck thickness did not help the matter at all :) And the bass is one heavy bastard which does not make it easy to play it live. So I'm back to downtuning the 4-stringer. Needless to say I like the sound of and open D much more! And the bass itself was built like an ass :D For an axe that did cost me 700€ shipped I expected it to be of a better quality... uh-huh, sure :D 4th and 5th strings chewed through the stock plastic nut on a 2nd rehearsal already and rendered the bass unplayable, so I was forced to order a graphite replacement from eBay. When it arrived, I was "delighted" to discover that unlike on the rest of my basses, the nut on this Jackson was sitting not on the neck itself but on a piece of fingerboard that extended right to the truss rod cover (which was also held in place by only one screw instead of three, and rattled when you played. Great job, Jackson!). I spent about 4 hours filing down both the new nut and that piece of fingerboard until I got them on a decent level to each other, and when the time came to replace that nut, too, I simply took the bass to a luthier and asked him to get rid of that unnecessary fingerboard "tail", so now the nut sits right on the neck, as it should :) Another disappointment was the hex keys: the one that was meant to adjust the saddle height simply did not fit the screws it was meant to adjust! It's size was 1.5 mm whereas the one that did fit these screws was 1.27 mm (0.0030 something in Imperial measurements; curse you buggers who use it :D :D), so I had to order it separately from Thomann. Class! Besides, the saddles got deformed by strings already, especially the one under the 5th string. Class, too! The bass is equipped with Jackson High Output humbuckers, and the bridge pup is buzzing from day one. My luthier said that the pup is definitely faulty: it has impedance of 24 kOhm instead of 11, as the schematics say. High Output indeed, my ass! :D The neck volume pot has started dying recently, which does not do the justice to the "craftsmanship" at all. Can't wait for the replacement pots and a pickup (some 10$ no-name from eBay) to arrive, so that I can practice my soldering skills >:) I think this comment got even bigger than the original one :D I'm not sure if I should get rid of this Jackson or not... For all I know I can buy a cheap ass 5-string PJ-bass and rig it with Seymour Duncans that each costs more than the bass lol This Jackson plays and feels nice in general, looks astonishing with its alpine white finish, but is not a live axe for me, not at least until I hit the gym :D Oh, and the extra long scale makes it pricey to change the strings (55€ on Thomann for an Elixir set, whoosh!). Decisions, decisions... :D Maybe you can give me a hint what can I possibly do, Rodney? :) I'm not playing in low tunings, so maybe getting this axe was a bit of an overkill :)

The bird will probably pop up here and there! I just got 2 basses from Japan that were nostalgia for me. I used to play the original BC Rich basses and a friend in Japan found 2 really cheap - a mockingbird and a warlock. I got them both just a couple of days ago. I'm setting them up for how i want them. they are a lot of fun! As far as your bass, I didn't read you saying there was anything you really enjoyed about it. It sounds to me like no matter what you do, you'll never truly be happy with it. If it were me, I would probably let it go. Sometimes all the effort just makes you angry at it, and you never get happy about it. It's like a girlfriend that you fought too much with! Only you can decide, but i'm only willing to do so much work, before I realize my time is worth more than the bass or the money. Good luck!

I have a bunch of fives. The last new bass I bought was a five because we were playing a lot of whole step detuned stuff. I kind of regret that. I would have been better off with a four. String tension on a heavy stringed bass always makes the fives feel more tight in standard tuning. I found myself detuning the five...pffft! I would have been better off with a four and a hipshot.
