There's nothing divisive about the NC. Its a Car and Driver Top Ten Car 8 times, which is more than another other generation. Most of the negativity was from a relatively small number of forum keyboard jockeys. Now with RU-vid, more people have been driving these cars, and the real truth is being spread.
I am a huge sports car enthusiast. Unfortunately my wallet is not as limitless as my desire. When I finally started my search I was down to the S2000, 1st gen Acura NSX, Porsche Boxster and BOSS 302 Mustang. The Honda and Acura prices were prohibitive(under 50K miles and mint required) and the Porsche scared me with maintenance and repair potential. I decided to test drive a Miata, as it met all the basic criteria and was reasonable $$$. For the last 4 years I have been pounding a 2013 Miata Club all over the mountains and country roads where I live. I have NOT ONE SINGLE regret. I installed a set of good coil overs and man this car dances through the corners(stock is very soft, but taught me the dynamics of chassis before upgrading). The shifting is literally sublime(only the s2000 shifter is better, but not by much). The engine (forged internals) sings up the rev range, no big power here but you do not care........ And what he said about all 4 tires road feel is so damn true. I do not know how they did it but you can literally feel what each tire doing. This car is the smiles per miles GOAT. Every single time I drive, even to the corner store it induces childlike glee. Think of it as a go kart for the road, and you will have the cars character spot on.
Own’d Several NAs over the years, switched to the NC 3.5 five years ago, still puts a smile on my face every time i open her up on a clear road, just a perfect drive at an affordable price 🤘🏼
Everyone always talks about the manual transmission but I love my six speed automatic transmission in my 2008 Miata. When I want to shift manually I use the paddle shifters and it’s so fun. In town it’s nice not to have to shift. I’m 75 years old so that’s a big factor. 20 years ago I would have wanted a stick. Love my Miata.
Whatttt 5 years into ownership the soft start has blown my mind, thank you so much for sharing this one! Couldnt agree more.. for some reason i never wanted to like the mx5.. but half a day driving a friends nc1 on track and i was shopping for my nc2.. and as mentioned 5 years in... I havent kept any other car for more than 1-2 years max.. i absolutely cant bring myself to part with it. If you know, you know!
I owned two Subaru WRX, and I modified them. I liked them very much, but it doesn't come close to how much I love MY NC2. It's true, fun is unmeasurable. and love can't be explained with mere words.
My 2014 NC 6 Speed shifts nice after about 5 minutes of driving.. first 5 mins is a stiff clunky mess imo... my 8th gen si 6 speed is the perfect car to learn manual on, my NC2.5 6 speed isn't as "easy" to shift and drive. Lots have same complaint as me I see online, but some also don't. Was told tight tolerance transmission and some are just more "stiffer / notchy" to shift than others. Overall love my NC still and putting coilovers on it totally transformed the experience!
Hi Jake, What would you say is more fun to drive out of the miata and your bmw 1 series? Reason i ask is i have a 1 series coupe aswell and its fun to drive but i have been playing with the idea of buying a mx 5 for a while now. Just wanted to hear someone elses thoughts who has both cars
Two totally different machines, and I love both dearly. Here are some thoughts: I've owned my 135i for over 11 years, and I still have zero desire to get rid of it. Every input And interaction with the car is so deliberate -- the shifter, pedals, steering react slowly and are heavily weighted -- that it makes driving it feel special, and the N54 engine is just so brutal with both the power delivery and the overall mechanical feeling of it. In this car, you know exactly what's going on. With the LSD conversion and aftermarket suspension, it also handles beautifully, able to put the power down effortlessly, or slide around on command. It's the last true BMW, with feeling and the specifically German quirkiness that has been completely ironed out of the new ones. The NC2, to me, is the Miata I feel most comfortable in. I've owned an NA, NB, this NC and driven the ND extensively. While I love the ND2 engine, pretty much everything else feels better in the NC2. The steering, transmission and overall feel, for me, is more enjoyable in the NC, though, when it comes to Miatas, they're all so damn good. Comparing the NC and the 135 is impossible, they both bring me so much joy, but in completely different ways. That's the fun part about looking out of my driveway and getting to choose which experience I want on any given day.
