I didn’t think I was a slave to my phone until someone said, “Did you realize if you spend two hours a day on your phone you are actually spending a month out of the year on your phone?” That was eye opening:

@@avishajain3557 Hi! Mine was an average of 8 hours a day. I changed this 4 weeks ago by making a plan for myself and I feel great!! My plan has been to first of all STOP using my phone whilst doing other things, which I think was a horrible constant noise for my head. No more phone while washing my face, brushing my teeth, taking a shower, cooking dinner, eating, going to the bathroom etc. Second thing was a time window of no screentime during a productive time of the day, to inspire myself to do things I love or need to do. This for me has been 12-15 in the afternoon, and I finally finished my book, played more on my guitar again and finished so many chores that were bugging me in the back of my brain! I didn’t force myself too much for all the other hours of the day, basic agreement with myself was that I wanted to live mindful of whatever it is I am doing. On your phone you lose touch of your actual life, heart and soul, and that really is such a waste…. I had all these videos I watched daily, and now I can’t be bothered to listen to strangers’ drama and lives. I feel calmer, present, and aware of my life again. I didn’t force certain apps of my phone, just don’t allow them at certain times of the day, or in areas of the house, like the shower, my bed, etc. If I choose to sit on the couch after 3 PM and watch something, I can. The joke is usually I am already doing something else by that point that I find more fulfilling. I halved my screentime immediately and it has already greatly improved my life. I knew this needed to be done, but you need to make an honest pact with yourself and know it is actually much harder to live with your phone glued to your face than to change it. So again, good strategy: - No more phone in the background (like listening to RU-vid videos while doing other stuff like cooking, brushing teeth etc.) Living mindfully = also consuming content mindfully. Keep yourself on the couch if you want to watch “TV”. If that means you are nót doing the dishes, put your phone away and do the dishes, instead of lying to yourself and taking your phone with you. - No social media like Instagram and RU-vid in bed. After 9 my phone gets put away and I ONLY allow myself ASMR at bedtime, for now. Bed and bedroom are for resting. - Choose a time window in the morning or early afternoon of 3 hours (or more) where you put your phone away. This will be the time that you have to do something that else! Be curious about this time and what you will decide to do with it :). Go for it!!!! P.s. I still find brushing my teeth and washing my face at night a horribly boring thing to do, but I suck it up and just do it without Reddit stories ;). I know my mind is adjusting!

This couldn’t come at a better time for me, Mayim. I’m struggling with severe depression, and I’m pretty sure my phone addiction is a major part of the problem. I wake up much too late every morning and then spend hours scrolling through Facebook and Instagram, looking at the lives of other people, instead of getting up and living my own life. I might begin by not bringing my phone to the bedroom every night. If it’s downstairs, maybe I’ll be more motivated to get out of bed.

I would forget it in there sometimes and some of the slightly older adults would think in was lazy or something to have a tv in there. 1. leave phone in grayscale - closet to black and white 2. No social media, email, or RU-vid apps- 3. Keep apps to one page and only have what is useful and needed 4. Go through apps about every 2 months and see if I really need it, always try to minimize 5. Don’t check it until after I get ready for work in the morning and no screens 1 hour before bed. It definitely is addictive so I’m always looking for ways to curb my use and limit what I have on it. I’m currently considering getting an old fashioned mp3 player and loading my music on it so I don’t need my phone for music.

You expressed it all deftly. It reminds us that in high school or even before high school children were taught to type using all the fingers of both hands. They could type essays quickly and efficiently. That was in the 1950s. Now the idiot phone forces people to think one letter at a time! A store in my neighborhood ten years ago was called "Typewriters and Things," selling items that the dumb phone users didn't want. Yes, as you said, let's carry notebooks around and write in them as we go and in quiet coffee shops.

Well, two months living out of a tent certainly made me realize what's meaningful - I was the only one without a phone, period, and whenever I had free time, I would talk with my crew members, write in my journal, work on my book, compose a song, or just take a breath of the mountain air. Cold turkey's not for everyone, and since I've been back I've become unhealthily obsessed, but I hope to take the lessons I learned from this summer forward into the rest of my life and get a grip, so to speak. (My dad has never had a smartphone at all, and I envy his couldn't-care-less attitude, but it's harder once you've gotten sucked in to be so nonchalant.)

The best way to break phone addiction is to just get rid of your phone as a whole. If you still need a phone, get a flip phone with no internet . I just deleted all of my apps, transferred my photos to my laptop, and gave my phone to a family member (that lives abroad) for them to have as their own. It is no longer a problem for me and if anyone wants to quit with no rebound just throw out that damn piece of junk

Thanks for the video. You're one smart person. The phones and such are for sad bored people without there own lives. Just like people that talk on the phone in public, the grocery line, etc, the people that tailgate, the people that do anything but just drive their car and be present and finally young people that their parents just couldn't take the time for. Smartphones will be what finally ruins this country.

I started by swearing off comment sections (except when benign, like here). I used to really get into it with others. I practiced deleting what I had written and walking away. After a while, I could stop myself before I started typing. I’m now at the point where I can look at the article and know it’s not going to end well. At some point, my goal is to stop looking at the articles entirely.

What a timely topic. I, too, have some trouble with overusing my smart phone. I am not a news junkie for the very reasons you list: depressing and crap I don’t want in my head. My brother is a Marine and I had to stop watching the news because it would send me into a panic while he was overseas. I’m very selective about my news and where I find it now... I have my iPhone set on”Do Not Disturb” between 11pm and 7 am, prioritizing sleep for me. Of course my family and best friend know how to get through in an emergency. I’m trying not to pick up the phone in the morning for anything except answering and checking the time. It’s not an easy balance of using the phone for efficiency purposes and just goofing off. Thanks, Mayim

Banning the phone from the bedroom was my new year's resolution this year. Now I only take it with me to bed when my husband isn't home, which happens maybe once every two months. I can relax better, and get up when my alarmclock rings instead of grabbing my phone and watch youtube and insta for at least half an hour begore getting up.

Beside your notes, I set off the notifications for 8 hours or a week. Those who don't hesitate to call me are showing it's something REALLY urgently important. Thats when I most of the time call back - and if I couldn't have reach somebody - I check the social media for more information. I use my smartphone as a mobile phone/cell phone most of the time. Pretty old school but its so comfortable i swear

Instagram and RU-vid are my vices on the smartphone. I regularly remove the apps when I realize I’m not getting things done the way I’d like. Facebook and news apps are two things I don’t have. I hate FB now. I’ve considered an actual alarm clock so I don’t use my phone, but then again...another thing to clutter my nightstand, so phone it is. I love the notebook idea, and I think it’s much more gratifying to physically write things down.

I used to put my phone down every single time my kid walked into the room. "Used to" 😒 She noticed this happened and was so happy about it. She was about 6 and I remember her saying, "When I come in your room, you ALWAYS put your phone down!😁" Yeah, it stopped. And it's gotten bad. She is 9 now and many times I don't even look up. 😟🤧 I know she notices. Sometimes I get snappy because she is distracting me. I definitely need to change. I was years late to the smartphone club. I can remember seeing how it changed everybody. I would walk into the living room at holiday family get together and EVERY single person on the couches had their heads down to their phone. Nobody was smiling, laughing, playing games anymore. Now I am right there with them! I mainly like the GPS. I do like RU-vid and Pinterest and Instagram...but I use it WAY too much. Thanks for an inspiring video. I plan to change!! Gonna be tough! Right now I am not feeling well, so I figured I will lay in bed and use my smartphone to get motivated to NOT use it. 🤣 I guess that's OK? Or is it an excuse?

There's an option on some phones that allows you to put the screen in a monochrome setting so that the colors are just black and white. This dulls out the trigger in your brain that makes you reach for your phone like a candy. This helps me sometimes because Instagram just gets boring and my eyes are not just reaching for the pretty colors. I have tried several times installing app blocker apps but they don't work, I always unlock them.

Here are a couple of things that help me: 1) working a job or in an office where you cannot/should not have a phone. I have worked in hospitals and government buildings, one place you really should not have your phone out (mmmm, delicious infectious diseases) and the other it is prohibited. In this way, not having my phone readily available at work has been a way to get people to interact with one another--during meetings or otherwise. And I get it... kids, a spouse... have them call your desk number in an emergency. Otherwise... leave it in your car. 2) Travelling places my phone hardly works has forced me to figure things out, especially in languages I do not speak. I was surprised as how resourceful I was when navigating trains, buses, and streets. It also pushes me to look around and enjoy where I am more, which is the point of travelling anyway. In this sense, travel has gotten me to the point of not reaching for my phone every moment I feel slightly lost or anxious. We are so heavily reliant on technology that we forget how capable we are just as ever-evolving humans.

Still, if others are at their phones, you wish you could distract yourself too. But you feel good and proud to have withstand it. Right after hearing your first tip, i took my old calendar and put him on my bedside table, looking forward not to reach for my Phone every morning from now on! The amazing thing is, this the 1st time I've ever actually heard Mayim speak when she isn't in character - and it was great! It was personal, clear and oh so relevant to me (as I'm laying bed - checking texts, then news, then playing the daily Sudoku puzzle before I even get out of bed!). Obviously, I need this friendly slap upside the head. I'm a GenXer, so my childhood had no computers at all. I remember (vaguely, it was a long time ago now) getting up and immediately wanting to play outside in the sun. Of the phone with the long cord hooked to the wall that only went off a couple of times a DAY rather than every minute or two. I remember having (and often losing) the war with my millennial children to get them to actually get outside and enjoy real life - running, jumping and yes, playing in the dirt. Those children are now adults and some have their own children, so suddenly(at least it seemed that way to me) I'm a grandma! I have waged that war to keep technology from becoming obsessive in my children's lives, without even realizing that I've been trapped by the same 'Interweb'. This is a great vid so relevant to me, and I immediately subscribed. Thank you Mayim, and I hope everyone has a safe, healthy, happy and fun day/week/year!

I have a bit of a phone addiction too but my personal “fight” with the younger generations is the fact they have no “internal navigation system”. They ask for a “pin” on google or by WhatsApp, even for going a couple of blocks away. If their phone is broken or stolen, they are not only unable to call anyone (no one knows any phone numbers anymore) but also have no idea where they are or how to get anywhere (or how to order an Uber). I find that terrifying!

I have installed a program to block apps. So I have set them so I can only open time wasting apps during the period of 5 - 8am and 5 - 11pm. It has made a huge difference in my life. I rarely am up by 8am so I have to wake up early to check or play. At night it stops me from watching netflix till dawn. Of course you can get around the blockout periods but it is a hassle.

I tried all what you just mentioned. And I succeeded to break my phone addiction. But now another thing cropped up -- my teachers/ superiors have started (sort of) forcing me to pick up my phone at their will. And I can't say no to them. So all my will power and ways to break my addiction have fallen to pieces.

I deleted all the applications that allowed me to constantly interact with others. Being a smart phone, I deleted all the email apps as that was continuing my addiction and causing me to pull my phone out of my pocket a lot more frequently. Im not on social media and also see, that if I was and had the applications I would again be pulling my phone out of my pocket more frequently. I became aware that I was using my phone a lot for replying or responding to emails. I wanted to stop this and this is when I decided to delete the email apps off my phone. I then only made it so that my smart phone was only a simple tool for me. Which would contain: maps, alarm clock, calendar, camera, compass, train times checker, notes taker, uber, calculator, text message facilities and phone facilites. As it is refered to as a, "Smart Phone". The main objective, is to use it as a phone as that is what it stems from. So I have really reverted back to use it more as a tool now. Now the phone only allows and helps me be productive and is a tool. A tool that I reach for when I have a requirement....not a wanting. If a person is to go deeper into themselves and start to be truthful with themselves, they could work out the main issues that causes them to have the addiction in the first place. Then the smart phone, which is only a byproduct of what is trully happening. Could be used for its usefulness rather than something we rely on to provide us with more than it should.

Turn the buzzing noise off and just look at it, when you decide to look at it. Already helps taking away a possible urgency. I don't know who said it, but someone once said that even the bzz bzz of a message received, even if we decide to ignore it, is like a baby cry that needs attention. So already that pulls you out of your headspace. And very often you look at it in the night and think "oh, just two messages" which might have gone up to more, would you have immediately responded. Unless you're a doctor on call then...please leave that beeper on XD

I deleted the FB app from my phone, muted IG notifications and hid the app from my menu. I muted the news app notifications and slowly tried to stay off of it. I decided to download a few books on my phone so that if I feel like holding it out of habit I can read a book instead of mindless schooling. I'm considering limiting my email notifications to once or twice a day instead of all day. I was also considering getting a landline, because I constantly feel like I need to keep checking my cell phone in case of an emergency. But then I get distracted by all the other notifications.

My tips: 1. Buy an alarm clock and leave ur phone out of your room 2. don’t bring your phone to the bathroom, 3. turn off notifications for apps that you judge "not urgent" ex: facebook, instagram, snapchat, youtube, Netflix, the news, etc. 4. If you don’t wanna fully stop being on your phone; set yourself a time gap to be on it. Ex: i’m gonna scroll on tiktok from 6-7pm. Ex; i’m gonna read my emails from 5-6. And a reminder that you got this! It becomes a habit after 30 days so KEPP PUSHING through: watch inspirational videos EVERYDAY if u have to. But promise yourself that you’ll try!

Hi, Mayim! Thank you for this video! I also use a notebook to keep track of my to-dos. It’s called a bullet journal. I have a brain dump page where I put everything I need to do, and then I divide up the tasks that are major or have deadlines and add them to my daily list. The other minor stuff gets added as time goes on. It has helped me immensely with staying organized. While I do use my phone to keep track of things, I use my bullet journal a lot more! I’m definitely going to check out more of your videos! Have a great day!

to use less of my phone, I'd decided to not use it while laying down. Usually i use it while laying down and it takes me so much out of my day. if I have to use it during the night I will but now I plug in my charger next to the opposite wall (less radiation for me) I will use it before bed but I don't get the luxury of using it in my bed anymore. So now I have to choose between sleep and my phone and it's pretty great. I've been getting better sleep since doing this and clearer thoughts.b

Two things: Log out of my social media when I‘m done using the app and log back in when it is my intention to use them. Even though my logins are saved and filled in automatically, this introduces enough… friction? …so the autopilot is balanced a little by intent. Second, if I really want to be on my phone first thing in the morning or last thing before sleeping? Fine, just don’t do it in bed. Get up and sit on the couch and Reddit away. Or I write those last text messages for the day standing in my bedroom and only get into bed when I’m done.

I have a horrible phone addiction, I deleted facebook but that was replaced by Instagram.. I've been getting better about looking at my phone first thing in the morning , I also feel the same way about having to do something as soon as I get notified even if it's not time sensitive, as soon as I get a notification I feel like I have to get it done right away.

Lol! Your clock and you wear a wqtch! You need to remember that all the pay phones are gone. If you see an accident, you would not be able to get help. Technology is great but it has to be used moderately. Your job expects you to have a phone so they can keep in contact with you. Smartphones are needed in case of emergency. You just put it in your purse and don't use it. Simple.

The world with cellphones is kind of sad, like I have barely any memories without some sort of technology (I got a phone when i was 12), and I've seen how its taken over our lives. Like I remember one time I had a sleepover at my house with one of my friends, and she forgot her phone. She asked if she could borrow my phone to check her instagram, and I suggested maybe she could try and go the night without instagram, but then she almost was in tears, like No, I need it. Whenever I am with my friends they are on their phones, checking instagram, or texting other people, or whatever, and its kind of lonely. I also remember one time my class did a challenge to go the week without using our phones IN CLASS. We were able to use them during lunch, during breaks, whenever we wanted, just not when we were in class, and people were freaking out. like seriously, these are 45 minute classes, and people were holding their empty phone cases with drawings of a home screen on them to calm themselves, or putting in headphones that weren't plugged in while they were doing work. Another time a girl in my class had her phone taken away for a couple weeks, and she was freaking out because she couldn't focus without music playing. Its really sad how addicting cellphones are, I really wish that we found a way to make it so that we can go back to the way things were before.

I've only just seen this video. I'm 15yo, & I'm trying SO HARD to break my phone habit, all I do with it is watch yt & WhatsApp ppl. I'm tryna use my phone less, so last night I thought abt it, & how much difference it would make in my life. So I started! I started off with simply switching on airplane mode, so that way I don't get distracted by calls or constant messages from my friends. Along with that, I also completely switched my phone off, so during the middle of the night if I get bored (when I get bored & I can't sleep properly I immediately resort to my phone) I can't go on my phone to scroll thru my camera roll or do ANYTHING. The next morning, I felt sooo tempted to check my phone: emails, messages, calls, yt notifs, all of that stuff. But every time I thought abt picking up my phone, I immediately said to myself, "oh yeah I switched my phone off and it's on airplane mode, never mind I guess". I now SWEAR by this method, bc I've realised how helpful this is, I've used my phone less today than EVER before. U guys should deffo try this out if ur struggling with constantly staring at ur phone. If u do try it out, let me know how u feel abt it, and if it's working for u or not!

I grew up in a similar time to you, but I also got a smart phone much later than most people, like 2011-2013ish. So I got to observe the shift in our society. One thing that I do, is I'll let my phone die at night sometimes. I won't plug it in until tomorrow, and there are days where I leave it completely at home, I put it on genuinely silent, not vibrate. Sometimes Airplane mode even. I have android and have many apps notifications blocked. I'll go into Facebook etc, when I think I need to check. I don't text anything that makes sense to be a phone call. (Text for addresses, making concrete meet me here plans, and grocery list stuff.) Calling, if I'm checking up on a friend. (Because if you're having a serious chat over text with a friend, that phone is going to remain in your hands while you wait for replies, you'll scroll through Facebook, Instagram, news etc while you wait.) I also try not to read on my phone/tablet/computer... I go for paper books and carry a sketchbook around for those lulls. When I go out with friends to eat, my phone never leaves my pocket, and we'll chat while we wait for our food because of it. If people come over to my house, my phone remains in my bedroom while I remain in the public areas. There's many great things about smart phones, I run a small illustration business almost entirely from my phone, but I learned that I'm not present or involved when on my phone. That people aren't connecting with the people around them and their communities because they've got all of the people they already knew accessible at the press of the button. So even if they move 3,000 miles away from their best friend, they can still see and talk to them everyday. Which is great. But it's also making us stay in very tight-knit communities where we never have to interact with people that may challenge our thinking, who have different backgrounds from us. I don't know, it's sort of a catch 22, but I do hope that the majority of people will see value in unplugging part time soon. But yeah, I'm probably a little too excessive in my no phone stuff, and hopefully didn't come off as too preachy... I do think it's worth being present. And yeah, typed this all on my smart phone. (But I did have to go grab it to leave a comment so... 🤷‍♀️)

My husband and I adapted the habit of switching to flight mode some time in the evening and switching it back the next day. (ideally AFTER we got up)... Because we still use our phones to wake us in the morning. But we will get an alarm clock (once we find one with sounds that actually don't give you a heart attack) soon. Then the phones will stay out of the bedroom, whenever possible. 😉

I deleted my biggest time wasters (social media… I’m also a sucker for a puzzle type game). Also, I don’t take my phone into the bedroom. It stays in the living room, like a landline. I have a smart watch which tells me when info comes in but I can’t really do anything about it on my watch so it remains as “unread” on my phone and I can deal with it later. My struggle is finding the time when I don’t feel guilt about being on my phone. I try to wait until my daughter is in bed, but then it’s that precious child free couple of hours I have to spend with my partner and he is just as deserving of my attention as she is. So yeah, haven’t figured that one out yet but I’m working on it.

I was also addicted to my smartphone and I hated how it made me feel so I decided to get rid of it altogether and buy a dumb phone with no internet on it at all. For the first two days I found myself craving my phone but that quickly went and I started to love not having it. I realised so quickly that I didn’t need it. If I needed to check my bank balance I could walk to the cash point instead of checking the banking app. If I needed directions I could ask someone or write them down before I left the house. I decided to buy a really nice camera so I could take photos of my kids so I popped it into my bag when I went out. We do not NEED smartphone; they are amazing but a luxury and lets face it, a complete distraction from reality.

NO social media on my phone! I turn off my phone when I'm in the grocery store or having dinner out. It stays in my purse when I'm in the car - I will check it when I get home. I keep in mine that the only reason I have the phone is in case of an emergency. I have used the GPS on it .. but otherwise - things can wait until I get home. And lastly - I don't surf the web via my phone, but will listen to music on it.

My cell phone stays in a room downstairs when I go to bed and I shut it off. I use an alarm clock to get up. I use a paperback agenda book. I don't answer phone calls, text messages, and emails right away. I make people wait. And I run my own business. I don't want people to think they can reach me at all hours of the day because I have a life outside of work too. I'm guilty of the scrolling though. I have lunch by myself and grabbing my phone to scroll through Facebook is too easy. My goal: grab a book instead of the phone.

I try to have my phone with me always as my Best Friend who is my world and life lives in there haha and I am always here for her and her for me and she can message at any time day or nite. We are currently in different countries. Phone is always with me but does not mean that I am on it. I will admit my phone sleeps in my bed for her and incase of family emergencies--older parents.
