From the student's point of view, a great teacher is one who fits in little bits of learning during the day that we don't realize. My 4th grade teacher was that way. She would read to us after lunch while we worked on lessons we hadn't finished such as math or spelling. Then she taught us to play music as well. And finally at the end of the year we all had a chance to be teachers by presenting a lesson from the last unit in our readers. My dad told me we would be moving when the school year was done and also my teacher would be staying home to raise a baby she and her husband had adopted, so it was a farewell year for both of us. But, when I think about being excited about learning I think of Mrs. Reidel.

I am studying to become a teacher. I feel like a failure already because i have been battling with perfectionism, rigid standards for myself...i am afraid that the rigid standards i put to myself are going to be the same i apply and expect from kids, because i know its not fair. People need support to thrive, not judgement. I need to practice compassion for me and for my future students because you are right. Idk how do i do that but those first two traits were spot on. Thank you for your videos

Cut yourself slack. The standards, the curriculum will come if you have the connection to the kids. Keep listening to Reynolds and find people like him and stick to them. There may not be many at your school but you can find them; they will always want to help you. That's who they are. This job is so hard but so worth it.

@@gregmay6007 thank you 🥹 It gets so discouraging to hear so many bads things about being a teacher even before i enter the profession. I hope to have the motivation, strenght and love for becoming a good teacher

The fact that you’re a) self-aware of your own shortcomings, and b) searching for ways to improve here on RU-vid tells me you’re going to be a great teacher. As @gregmay6007 said in his reply, the job while difficult, really is worth it. Also if it makes you feel any better, there’s loads of kids out there who thrive when provided with clear, rigid structure, and rise to high standards. My advice is to look for a way to turn your self-proclaimed weakness into a strength. You got this!

Network with veteran teachers, then go with the flow. I also recommend doing some sub work as well. Confidence will come naturally.

I always love listening to you. I love those "hold your nose" days. I retired and they hired me back because they couldn't find a replacement (double dipping pension + salary). I volunteered to do some social emotional learning training and am doing weekly lessons in the classroom. I was nervous but took the plunge and now I look forward to my Wednesdays of a little "activator" game, then sitting in circles and talking about topics of our choosing. In one class we were laughing so hard I was wiping tears away. Sweethearts and Heroes is the program we're using if anyone is interested in checking it out. I recommend you to all the new teachers. Keep up the good fight.

Thank you for these! I’m a first year teacher and I’ve watched almost every one of your videos as a way to decompress and reflect after school. I always learn something and find motivation to keep trying to be better.
