Its a paraphrase of the famous phrase "Do not allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good." When it comes to art I think the paraphrased version works better.

I won't say I'm an expert artist, more on the lines of a hobby artist.. I've always wanted to do portraits - it's a strange fascination for me.. but I'm terrified of it.. I don't wish to spoil someone's face 😂 so I joined your class on Udemy - that's ongoing.. and now here on RU-vid... Must say, these techniques and tips and tricks is what has brought me a little out of the cave of "I'm scared of portraits" will continue to learn!! Thank you so much!!

In the block-in stage you are at each step providing the solution to problems you would otherwise encounter in the next step. This is not just to say that you are thinking ahead, but rather that you are letting yourself solve as few problems as possible that are amassed over time by your past self.

A wonderful comment, thanks. It's different than saying: "I didn't cause it, I can't control it and I can't cure it", as stated by many for a variety of problems in life!

I’ve looked at many videos like this showing the different methods. What I find difficult to grasp is how random you take a slice from the sides of the ball and how the other lines seem to be just guesswork without any reference to the model. To me the head could be any head, male or female. So maybe I am missing an important part of the method. I am also no looking to copy a picture but apply this to live sitters.

You should be a big youtuber, I started drawing daily with a mindset of becoming a decent artist a week ago and I've been reading the Loomis book. But when I got to the Loomis planes of the head nothing seemed to work and I always messed up the proportions, so I searched for some tutorials about the planes and here I am. You are great! With the Loomis book and your channel I'll be drawing people with ease in no time!

Loomis and Reilly methods are really hard to get a likeness for me. I just end up with a generic head.For anyone who has the same problem, try out Chris legaspi’s method. Worked better for me. Might help you too. But not to discredit the other methods, they are still essential. Any tips for likeness with them mr juice?

All jokes aside, the problem I have with the Loomis method is that it takes a fair amount of understanding proportions before you even start. And, while it may just be the various tutorials I watched, it didn't tell you where the various markers for those proportions are. Chop off the sides of the head. Okay...but how much of it? Where does it start and end? I kept chopping off too much or too little, which led to the face looking wrong but not knowing why. It was years later that I watched some random person doing free drawing and they used a guideline at the end of the eyebrows that coincided with the start of the side plane of the head. And then it all clicked for me. Why didn't the 100+ Loomis videos I've watched ever show this guideline? I now use the Loomis method. But with different guidelines that make more sense in my opinion.

How am I going to do it with charcoal, these many lines and then erasing them is going to spoil the paper. Also would cause problems with coloring and it is not going to work with ink pen at all which I use for daily drawings.
@ChrisPetrocchi
@ChrisPetrocchi Год назад
For charcoal you can begin the sketch with vine charcoal which is easily erased, changed, moved around and so on. OR, sketch in very lightly with a B HB graphite pencil-just don't dig into the paper very much or it will score the paper and/or cause a sheen. After the rough is laid in you can go to your darker charcoals in steps such as B, 2B, 4B , 6B etc. gradually getting darker. These techniques work with ANY medium including ink. Cheers

This video presents the methods. It doesn't explain them well at all. So, it's not really a tutorial. But I've never heard of three of these methods, and I'm interested in the Reilly, Hu, and Asaro methods as I'm familiar with Loomis. I struggle with likenesses and am self-taught. I can draw likenesses if they are already drawn by an artist, but, drawing from the photo or model is very hard for me.
@rem7502
@rem7502 Год назад
Yeah loomis and Reilly are usually taught as fundamentals. It’s amazing how he was able to go from a generic head to a likeness here. I can never get that right. But I think it’s also because the model here is very close to the idealised male head the loomis method leads to.

Apparently everyone that made previous comments is just much faster than I am, 'cause the pace you move at is much too fast for me. I'd have to spend the entire day watching this over an over and over to get it. I was just going to ask if you could just go a bit faster, but I know some folks don't much care for sarcasm. You just showed how to draw a generic head from 3/4 view, and then placed his characteristics without explaining how we can do it and make it look like the person pictured. I kinda hate these videos.
