Hey Marc, i can totally relate to what you are saying. I try to make a little bit of music every day for two reasons: 1. I believe there are more creative times and less creative times. If i sit down every day to make music, the chance of a creative time and my music-making time overlapping are higher. I see that it works this way. Some days i come up with no new ideas, some days i come up with multiple ideas! At these moments i would like to stress the point you made about immediacy/friction of making music. I have a minimal hardware-setup (One groovebox, an external synth and a mixer). All i need to do make music, is turning the groovebox on and plugging in headphones. This very low friction is so great! I tried making music in a daw, but the friction is so high - i have to sit on my desk, i have to connect a midi-controller or input the notes by clicking, which is much slower than my workflow on my Deluge. 2. I also believe that if i finish more songs, the chance of one of them being really good, is higher than trying to make the one perfect song. (let's say 2 finished songs per week = 96 songs/year, maybe 10% of those are gold - that's 9 awesome tracks to be proud of!) My learning from this 'make music every day'-approach (now applied for almost one year) is that there are some days or phases, where no matter how long i sit down to make music, there are no results that are worth saving. The first two times this happened, it really affected my mood and let me question if it is even worth continuing. But now i know: these really are just phases - the creative days will come again! With this in my mind, i try to detect these 'unproductive' days and quit the music production sessions on these days early, before it affects my mood.

holy words! being there all the time you can is the key to catch your creativity moment. I'm doing almost the same at a very basic level, but i try to be at my desk whenever i ca, is it to write a song, to practice my instrument, to watch a tutorial on how to mix, playing with my daw, doing a video. Wheneveri can i'm there. My works will probably not be "hits" but to me they are great results i got with lot of commitments. You doing a great job man! Let me know what you think about mine if you have few minutes to dedicate to my channel!! All the best mate!

I think it's OK to work on infrastructure and I actually enjoy it, you needn't make music every single time you're near your synths. Also after upgrading a LOT of stuff, I needed to find a different workflow which took a LOT of time, which is also OK. Now I'm nearing the state where really everything is working together perfectly and the first few attempts on music I did after a long break confirm that everything is in the right place now. I'm looking forward to making music again - which hasn't alway been the case, especially after spending WEEKS under my studio desk, checking and wiring and exchanging cables. So yeah, no pressure. A break is normal and might be part of the music-making process, actually improving things in the long run.

Great Video Marc. For many years ie 25 years I was waiting for that right time that would enable me to make a great track, but it never happened. Three years ago I suddenly found my sound and also my life was quite stressful. I needed something I could call my own, so i found that in music. Everyday I would come into my studio (only a mac mini and Logic) to make music to relax myself. the more I made music the more i enjoyed it and the quicker I finished tracks. Also I made a point of not trying to make "the perfect track" instead when i felt something was good I would release it on facebook or RU-vid and move onto the next project. Later I did find I would take more time polishing tracks because i had more confidence and was more relaxed. Also i was learning my trade as it were. Right now for the past month I have hit a bit of a wall, but i'm not worried because this isn't like making a sandwich, it's art amnd something deep, so it does come and go. the key is to keep going. Now I'm working on two tracks to keep my mind stimulated and when ideas come I go back to either track. So I think the key is, to keep creating and respect music not as something that can be done 100% all the time. It does come and go, but keep doing it no matter. Love the studio Marc. the carpentry is also great. Thanks again for the video

I appreciate you bringing up repetition and consistency, I've been trying my best to work on music daily for the last 4 months and I've learned and progressed more in this period of time than the 10 years before that. Keep the content flowing. Cheers.

Thanks for an honest take on this subject. I'm more or less in the same spot with a home studio setup. Lots of updates, lots of distractions. I try to reduce, but sometimes it is overwhelming, and I have no energy left to make music. After all, it's only me maintaining it all and big studios have those things done periodically, like gear maintenance, setup, updates. Then, the artist uses the studio and everything is already working and ready for their brilliance to come through on the track.

Thanks for picking this up! I wanted to summarize some ideas, thoughts and lessons learned for people out there. I think there's more to say than gear review and studio-tours that could help fellows out there : )

Thanks for the hint! I'll have this in mind. I feel like I just got in the right mood to talk about things that are not in the right shape.
