@JollyRodders most southern express units had the controls replaced later in life to that like on a sliding door unit where the drivers can just rest his or her feet on a pedal rather than getting wrist ache from the old fashioned deadmans handle

@ianbillericay Ah I see...I worked for another lot :) We still had the old handle with no foot peddle.
