Hi everyone! Today I'm sharing styling tips to "fix" clothes that you already have that you never wear. I hope these easy style tips to wear the clothes you already own help shop your closet and love the clothes you already have while being more stylish!
On this channel, I share #slowfashion and #sustainablefashion tips that center around how to #shopyourcloset, and restyling pieces you already own. I also spotlight brands that I believe in every now and then. I believe in #creativityoverconsumption, and that we all have the power to be conscious consumers.
Slow fashion looks different for everyone, and I'm so grateful you share this space with me!
Alyssa

Whew. This "it's not your body" message was well-timed ❤️. As a 60-something, I've been going thru some pretty uncomfortable body changes and nothing seems to be working wardrobe-wise right now. Thank you for these invaluable reminders!

I always prepare my food in advance for work so I don’t eat out, equally, I always prepare my outfits in advance. Consequently, everyone at work fawns over my lunch and my look. Preparation works for me, it is a time saver rather than a time waster.

The notion that anything that is good is, at the same time, "effortless" is absurd. Looking good takes effort and patience. One can look "unfussy," but that takes effort. Thanks for the reminder. Xoxo 💕

Thanks for the reminder that if the clothing isn’t the most flattering it doesn’t mean it’s wrong. I often look better in clothes that skim my body. I have no hips so even though I’m a size 16 , I can look lean-ish in a body con dress. But I am not comfortable in that. My words are Flowy, Layered, Unexpected. So I will always layer on a moto or a cropped sweater or an oversized sweater to feel like “me.”

Greetings from another “hipless” woman. It’s not the easiest body type to dress, is it? Pants always have huge empty flaps sticking out the sides at my hips, so I wear lots of skirts and dresses instead. I also look good in fitted, dresses and more fitted styles in general, no oversize items for me. I’m going to try one of the peplum tops or jackets that are coming on trend and see if that makes me look a bit more shapely around my hips. My legs and hips are like sticks at any weight🙂
@kfelong3111
@kfelong3111 Год назад
@@kimberlyperrotis8962 yes skirts and dresses for me too. Peplum is a great idea. I can’t go there because I also have a long torso so they don’t hit me right. We all got our own stuff don’t we?

Hipless, 6 ft tall, size 16, and 6i yrs old. But even at my skinny size 10 ( back in the day) I had the same fit issues. Finally have learned to stick with the shapes/styles that work for me. A wrap dress is always a winner!

It’s great to hear you say that not every outfit has to be super-flattering, I agree. The majority of the time I like to define my waist, but not on a 100F day. I have a linen dress that’s designed without a fitted waist, for maximum coolness, and that’s exactly how I wear it. Yes, I would look more shapely with a belt, but that’s not the be-all and end-all of a wardrobe. Comfort gets top priority for my wardrobe, if I get overheated, itchy or something feels too tight, I know I won’t wear it however cute it looks.

I agree! Never have I been able to just throw something on and walk out the door. Every outfit takes some effort to achieve a desired look. Sometimes, taking the time to “play” with a piece and try it on in unconventional ways, will often reveal a piece that allows you more versatility which is priceless, particularly when putting together a travel wardrobe. I am 70 years old and a mere 4’8” tall. I, often, convert skirts into dresses, kimonos into dresses and scarves, and I flip cardigans for a cropped look. I also reverse tops and some dresses to create a completely different neckline. Scarves also serve as tops, belts, skirts, and shrugs. Yesterday, I thrifted a cute below the knee black and white floral print skirt into the cutest mini sundress! Throw on a straw hat and bag and some fun jewelry pieces along with a pair of white sandals and I’ve got myself a cool outfit for a day of shopping. By exchanging the straw bag for a clutch, pulling my hair back into an elegant bun, and changing out the shoes for a pair of low heels….now I have the absolute perfect outfit for dinner at a fine restaurant or any special event that would require a step up from casual wear. That little gem will most definitely be included in my suitcase for my next vacation or cruise! I pack just a small carry on bag for my trips as I only need a very few items to sustain me for a week or so.

I have learned so much since following you. I totally edited my closet (8 goodwill bags later), expanded my commitment to sustainability by moving away from fast fashion, being more thoughtful about what I wear and more importantly how I wear it. I have always been a positive and confident person but I have even more confidence and a spring in my step when I go out and I receive even more compliments than ever on my looks. I have also spread your word and inspired others to embark on this journey…ironically my daughters have embraced this for years. Anyway, a long rambling note to say…thanks!

Yes! This is the foundation of slow fashion, isn’t it?! If what we have already invested in isn’t working, we are continually dissatisfied. I’ve been there. And now, I’m 52, my body’s changing, as well as I’m struggling with some long haul Covid and digestive issues. Some days, I hardly feel like myself. Knowing that I can play with, adapt, tweak what I already have, as well as embrace my body and find my own unique and authentic style has been a life saver and a game changer. So grateful for your words and content. 🙏🏼💕

Guess I'll have to mend my ways. In the past, I would only iron if someone held a gun to my head OR if I had a calculus exam to study for. You are right that putting out clothes in their best condition gives us a good base to style an outfit. I love your (seemingly) effortless style. You always look great--stylish, presentable and comfortable.

It was the strangest thing when my body started changing at age 50. It kind of settled into a whole new shape. I love it, but also considering I moved from a tropical environment, back to a cooler one, I had to totally begin working out how to dress myself and revisit my style. Thanks for keeping this dialogue going, its so helpful.
@kimberlyperrotis8962
@kimberlyperrotis8962 Год назад
I know my body shape well now, at age 63, and know that one thing I’ll always have to do is “dehip” my dresses. I stitch the sides straight and eliminate the hip curve, there’s no way my skinny hips will ever fill out a fitted dress properly. At last, I don’t consider this a “figure fault” it’s just that clothing is designed for whatever average shape the manufacturer has in mind. Those averages usually have much rounder, fuller hips (and bottom) than I do. It took me years to figure out why my waist is “too big”, it isn’t that, it’s just that my hips are narrower than average clothing cuts. I think we women, especially younger ones, are far to self-critical about ourselves in general. Unfortunately, this is caused by societal conditioning, beginning with our parents.

Wonderful tips! I often find just pushing up my sleeves instantly gives me a look I’m more comfortable with and it’s more flattering for my proportions. Also, just adding a scarf to a simple outfit is often all I need to lift it from nice to smart! A full length mirror is your best friend to see what’s needed to finish a look! Thanks for another great video!

I've been having this exact issue with my clothes where things just aren't "working" and your tips are super helpful and a great reminder that clothes usually have to be altered in at least some small way to look amazing on you because they don't just magically conform to your exact body size and shape and fit preferences the second you put them on. Love your content!!!

Excellent video! I practised all these ways (learned over the years) and some were really game changing like having your clothes tailored: I buy lots of second hand clothing and would think: I will not spend $20/$25 on alterations for something I paid the same amount! Big mistake! as I would end up not wearing the garment and wasting my initial expense. When I decided having the good quality clothes I would buy 2nd hand tailored to fit me, I would wear these clothes often, love them and did not buy another piece to replace the ones I was not wearing!!! Second point: you are right that you will find your own unique style by tailoring your clothes to fit you the way you like them to fit. I have all the shirts I wear as overshirts cropped above the largest part of my hips: I prefer that look on me and it became one of my signatures look.Third point: ironing/steaming: sorry, there is no way you will look chic/stylish if your clothes are wrinkled....

Lol, I have the time to tweak/fuss on weekends and date nights with hubby, but work weekdays I'm just trying to get out of the house with my go-to outfits. If a garment requires too much styling I give it away. You are 100% right, few garments are perfect on our body. I have vastly improved other garments by sewing/altering. The other day, I sewed the button plackets together on 2 Rails featherweight cotton button-downs that always made me looked disheveled. Now the shirt drapes nice, there's no gapes. ( Bottoms not sewn so I can still tie into a knot.) The shirts went from barely worn to being on regular rotation. It was a five minute hand-stitched fix for each shirt.

Dry cleaning is super expensive, but worth the investment making suits and dresses last longer. When I was at Uni I had a monthly clothes swap with a friend. We were technically the same number size on clothes but so many things that suited me didn’t suit her and vice versa. That really taught me that it’s the clothes that need to suit me, not my body needing to change. The other advice I always love is to treat yourself and your body like a dear friend. I love my friends so much and I have never given a thought to them having to look a certain way.

1. Steam or iron. The clothes will drape better. 2. Does the garment actually fit? What do you want to look in clothes? 3. Do I want over sized look? Do I want... Tip Try your outfit on the night before. 4. Where do you want to emphasize? Signature look repeat something.
