AGREE on most of what you shared.... 4-WD and AWD IMO are90% of the time unnecessary, cost more money, and cost a FORTUNE more to FIX ! Absent your unusual extreme environment of course...
For some van dwellers in the western USA who can follow non-freezing weather, mud is a more important traction consideration than snow, and a still bigger concern is slope climbing capacity on dusty dirt roads, or in sand. Perhaps the best argument for 4WD is the greater ground clearance that comes with it, to be able to camp farther from paved roads. It's great that Ford has a 4WD option for the Transit now, along with a factory-engineered lift, with the Transit Trail model.
