I like the fact that you give due respect to the Patrol in the circumstances you found yourselves in; it is not just blind faith in your own 79s but acknowledging other vehicles is a good touch of class from you, Ronny.

Another great series Ronny and so glad I found you and big thanks to Mrbuckaroonie for mentioning you. I have been binge watching all of your videos for the last month every chance I get. keep up the great work and I love they way your videos are becoming more and more professional. The amount of content and how you show the wheeling and camping part really appeals to me. My goal is someday to have my Ute setup for overlanding myself. Keep up the great work from an American living in Queensland. Chris

Pressurising doesn't make it float (about 20:00). Windows up or windows down it will have the same bouyancy whether or not water gets in. Theoretically, pressurising it might delay ingress of water but that effect, if it exists, would be miniscule. The only reason you might want to leave a window open is if you think you might have to use it to get out of the vehicle. But, Ronnie, I love your videos. Keep them coming.

The only thing I'd add is using your winch to also secure the vehicle from the front when on a loose surface incline like that. Once you take the weight off one wheel with the jack it can, in extreme circumstances, shift the weight just enough that the other wheels slip momentarily even though they're as locked as they can be & no one wants to take a bottle jack in the eye on the first track of the day. Good stuff as always & that GQ is an animal, makes me want to crack the 9" out on my GU...

One other note about water crossings. I believe it's better to do it one at a time, not so close together as in this video. If the lead vehicle gets stuck the middle and any other trucks in the water are now sitting in water without the benefit of the a bow wave to displace some of the water inside the engine bay and cab. If the rear vehicle is unable to reverse the middle guy(s) can get royally screwed. Doing it one at a time always allows at least one vehicle to be clear and able to tow or winch out the stuck truck.

Hey Ronny, always good to watch the vids. Just a quick note, when putting a cover on the front of the bar it helps stop the fan becoming a propellor and trying to pull water. There's been diesel vehilces that come out worse with fan damage. Just thought you would like that tip as its for all vehicles. Cheers!
@Ronny_Dahl
@Ronny_Dahl 6 лет назад
It wasn’t fan damage we were worried about on this occasion it’s was more the electrical stuff in the petrol. That said you have a very good point but...
@joeking22
@joeking22 6 лет назад
Forgive my naivety but don't most modern cars have electric thermo fans or do 79 series still have fan driven ones?
@tims728
@tims728 6 лет назад
I'm certainly no mechanical expert (not qualified) but have learnt a few tips from mates etc who are mining mechanics and auto electricians. In trying to interpret your response, it seems you are referring to the same arrangement for cooling a modern engine. Thermo fans work by having a temperature sensor switch them on if used on a radiator/air-con condenser, but can sometimes be wired (usually aftermarket) to be either always on or switched off depending on application, often for intercoolers. This is different from the old rigs that had a fan belt connected to the motor hence turning the fan continuously to cool draw heat out of radiators etc. As engines became more efficient (complicated) the use of sensors and relays engages fans to draw air over the radiator, A/c condenser when specific operating temperatures are reached or the A/C is running full belt (flat out etc). Then there's viscous fans to discuss...... My main point is the fan, if it is running, can bend blades by trying to 'pull' water when in operation, and damage the radiator because the fan blades deform and touch the radiator as they spin. This applies to a wide range of cars, including make, model and year of manufacture. Try a google search of failed engines when vehicles complete water crossings not using a water bra (on the car, not the wife). When a cover is used like Ronny set up it also helps to make the bow wave which keeps an air pocket around the radiator and helps prevent the fan blades causing any damage if the fan is indeed running. Possibly id the A/C is switched off and the car has had time to cool to normal operating temps, then the radiator fan won't kick in, and no problems will occur. . No sarcasm, offence, or ridicule intended in my reply just a few thoughts to add to Ronny's tips. Take on board what you need and forget the rest. Cheers!

Great Video Ronny... Your probably trying to make a point in your video, but I noticed a little to much braking on the downhill in those conditions, almost zero control when skidding like that. For me its gear selection and engine compression, (I’m sure you know that lol). Anyway, here’s a tip, try putting Vaseline on those cotton balls for damp weather fire starting, works great! About crossing water with a pressurized cab. I'm afraid your mate was all wet, pardon the pun. Having higher pressure in the cab does not make the vehicle more buoyant, not having water in the cab does but not the pressure in the cab. The AC only puts a very small amount of increased air pressure, basically positive but not enough to make any difference to the overall weight of the vehicle. It will help, a little, to keep water out but I'd bet if you stopped in a still pool of water with the AC on you would not see bubbles coming from the cab due to the AC. Closing the windows is probably a good idea but just to keep from splashing water inside the cab on on you as you cross.

Look up Ray Mears' cutting with an axe videos. Your splitting method is just waiting to take a finger.. hold the stick in your hand then strike the end grain from a parallel plane to your axe swing, I've seen many folks cut their hands really bad splitting wood that way.. Out there in the Bush don't take such risks my friends. Looks like a Gransfors Bruks axe, if so, you will be severely injured with one wrong swing. Cheers! Thanks for sharing, I learned a lot from the driving. Do you mind me asking how much cash you put into your Landcruiser to get it this good? I'm starting out with a 97' Ford Expedition and have a long way to go still to be able to do river crossings.

This is going to be a fun series. You did not mention it, but I was glad to see that you also chocked the wheels when you were digging under your rig! Also, those narrow tires on the Patrol make a big difference in the mud. In my area, SW Idaho, USA, we get a slippery sticky mud that even puts narrow tires to their test ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HmE-hYWIXGo.htmlm37s . Look me up if your ever in the US, George.
@ianparsons849
@ianparsons849 6 лет назад
What tyre pressures do you run for slick mud? In theory higher pressures (I.e. 40Psi or more) should work better as the tyres would cut down to the firmer surface. Obviously soft mud or sand you want lower pressures for floatation.
@swidahooverlanding2867
@swidahooverlanding2867 6 лет назад
You nailed it! I was running my street running psi which is 4Opsi. Yes, the idea is that the narrow tire can cut into the mud to get to the firmer ground below and give you better directional control and forward momentum. Wide tires tend to float on top of the mud which makes directional control difficult and of course forward momentum is lost because you are spinning more on the surface of the mud. By airing down you are compounding this problem even more by adding more floatation.

the comment regarding using air con to pressurize the cab and the vehicle floating away makes little to no sense... not sure where that logic came from. However, nice vid Ronny. The south west region has some spectacular play areas for blokes and their trucks.
@reubs91
@reubs91 6 лет назад
Blair Whittle I’ll try find a link for you, the Victoria government I think did a study regarding cars and flood waters, the put a Nissan patrol in a ‘pool’ of sorts and filled it up, it started to float at nearly the halfway mark, really didn’t take much and surprised the hell out of me!
@Cchange4us
@Cchange4us 6 лет назад
reubs91 yeah I saw the same study, if the volume of water displaced equals the car Weight then it will float, however that bloke was saying that turning your AC on while doing a water crossing will increase your chances of making it float.. thats just incorrect
@reubs91
@reubs91 6 лет назад
Blair Whittle well it does pressurise the cab, so logic would suggest it does make it much more likely it would float as no air is escaping. However I wouldn’t put money on it making any difference if someone tested it.
@Cchange4us
@Cchange4us 6 лет назад
pretty much, that whole idea of turning the AC on is useless anyway, it would only raise the cab pressure by a minuscule amount, hardly enough to overcome the pressure of the water entering.

Could you expand a bit more on why a diesel doesn't matter when going through water compared to a petrol? Is it just the electrics?
@Ronny_Dahl
@Ronny_Dahl 6 лет назад
its more the electrics of the petrol especially the older ones. Diesel as great for water crossing but very unforgiving should water enter the motor... with a diesel its usually game over. A petrol on the other hand will have a better survival rate from water ingest but is at a higher risk of failing the crossing in general.
@KonstantinKuehn
@KonstantinKuehn 6 лет назад
Also, from my days doing forestry I quickly learned that you can only trust two brands of chainsaws.. Stihl if you want the best, Husqvarna for similar performance at a better price.. Don't go Electric, those batteries aren't reliable enough yet. Then get yourself some chainsaw chaps and eye protection at the very minimum.. I've seen seasoned forest workers have a momentary lapse of judgment, those chaps save lives, especially in the backcountry.. Chainsaw wounds look like shark attacks, don't take the risk!!

Love these mini series vids, WA has some of the best country for this. A couple of things: - 1. What is that little red line say at the bottom right hand corner of Ronnies Vids? It draws my attention all the time. 2. Why do you use imperial measurements Ronnie? As an Aussie I grew up with metres and cm, I wouldn't have a clue about feet and inches (we've been metric for over 50 years) I've always got to get the old converter out to work out the real dimensions.
@lukehastie7186

That’s the rev limiter light, all Ronny’s vids are redlining.
@firetofork

1. That's a subscribe button, turn annotations off and it will go away. 2. Old habits die hard, and when you get the conversion wrong on camera you get slammed in the comments. I'm an aussie but no matter how hard I try, I always think of people's height, tyre size and boat lengths in imperial. It's hard to change!
