40 Year Old Beehive In Ancient Catalpa Tree!
***Why were the bees removed? : This tree is resting almost completely paralell to the ground due to it having falllen over sometime before the bee removal was performed.
Two branches are holding it up. One such branch was resting on a fence & sticking out past the sidewalk. The entire tree likely needs to come down as it's in pretty bad shape.
The branch the bees were in had broken almost completely away from the rest of the tree & was considered a dead limb.
Approximately 3 days later The tree company was scheduled to come by & remove some limbs.
The limb the bees were in was being hauled away because it was a dead limb.
The limb had to go but the ethical thing was to perform a live bee removal before the limb was cut up & hauled away.
The homeowner "Bob" who you see in the video claims honey bees have been in this tree for at least 40 years!
Instead of the bee colony being eradicated before the tree company hauled off the limb, Bob elected to perform a live removal & I was contacted to do so.
This was no easy task, removing this old bee colony from this huge ancient catalpa tree.
I began the job at noon & didn't get out of there until around 8 PM.
I was called in to perform this task courtesy of the homeowner & Bayou Tree Company who the latter I have worked with plenty other times over the years.
I was whipped when all was said & done, believe me on this but the bees didn't give me a hard time, they found a new home in Gonzales, Louisiana & the tree company & Bob were very happy with what I was able to achieve on this day.
That's a win, win in my book.
If you have questions, throw them at me. I do my best to answer questions & respond in a timely fashion, all because I appreciate you!
It's people like you who allow me to produce these videos & I hope you find them educational as well as entertaining.
Yes, you guessed it, I fool with bees a lot! Like at least ten months of the year. Here in southeast, Louisiana we have very mild winters that suit honey bees just fine.
I will go just about anywhere to fool with beehives but I live just outside of New Orleans, Louisiana so that is obviously home base.
I'm on facebook, instagram & twitter as JPthebeeman.
Incidentally, this is the first video to be edited with my new iMac in final cut pro. Loving both so far! Only took me 10 years to finally get the computer I needed to create the videos I bring to you.
Thanks again for your support, it is much appreciated!
...JP

Of the hundreds of RU-vid honeybee videos that I have watched, this ranks at the TOP. Working alone you made a terrific capture in a very difficult labor intensive situation. Knowing you had a long process to accomplish, with no attitude, with a kind gentle demeanor, you accommodated your curious onlookers, welcomed them, educated them, gave as much time as they needed to satisfy their curiosity while sacrificing your precious amount of daylight and finished the project by headlamp. You sir are a gentleman and a prince. God bless you and yours!

How adorable to let the little girl be in your video, and teaching her a little bit about how a hive works. You do an awesome job of saving these bees that would probably just be sprayed with pesticides and another hive would have been lost. It's awesome how you can just go and get them and they for the most part are ok with it. You and your videos are slowly changing my fear of bees into curiosity. Carpenter Bee's are not the same as Honey bees and should be left alone, they are much larger and have a very painful and venemos sting compared to the Honey bee. As with Bumblebees, Carpenter Bee's tend to have a Hornet mentality when dealing with people so I always recommend leave them alone.
@arukeagraves300
@arukeagraves300 5 лет назад
From what i looked up the sting is just like a bumblebees as for the hornet mentality thats a very rare occurence, and since its only the females that sting i say you just very unlucky, these bees around my house dont seem to care that we walk past them as long as we're calm, plus i think they understand we put out all the hanging flowers and take care of all the bushes around the house so they can have a safe home and not worry about the heat killing off all the plants here

And the little girl is probably now not just a future honey connisseur, but a lifelong bee advocate, which is awesome. Beautifully brought up, too - I noticed that she said "thank you" very nicely and unprompted. I wonder if that is really one continuous colony with uninterrupted succession, or repeated re-occupations with barely any break between. In wild bee terms, it certainly looked as if it was a very desirable residence, so wouldn't have stayed empty for long.

Hey JP! Few questions: 1: How long have you dealt with bees, both casually and professionally? 2: How often do you get stung/ how many times have you been stung by bees? 3: What's your favorite/most memorable experience in your line of work? 4: What can the everyday person do to help protect bees from extinction? Love your videos man, RU-vid recommendations are truly odd

I've seen plenty of videos, but what's wrong with asking questions? I know he said he's been dabbling since 95 and temperament of bees decides the amount of times he gets stung, but why is it wrong to ask specifically? Everybody likes good answers! Sorry to annoy you Foo Me

2, and 4. You can get stung a few times up to dozen working a hive. More frequent stings = put on bee suit. You can keep bees in your back yard. Set out a swarm trap, get free bees. Build a Japanese style beehive. Simple little 1 foot box, bbq skewers, built from 1x6 lumber. Floor tile for lid and bottom.
@awaitingthetrumpetcall4529
@awaitingthetrumpetcall4529 5 лет назад
_"4: What can the everyday person do to help protect bees from extinction?"_ Not a direct answer but I saw a video where domesticated bee species are transported to orchards and farms to pollinate. This has the effect of replacing wild varieties of indigenous bees. Commercial bee cultivation apparently has a negative effect on genetic diversity. (not the Africanized variety) The banana industry is also vulnerable for the same reason: The commercially cultivated variety is the Cavendish banana which is susceptible to a certain fungus. The banana industry is tough: The fruit has to be transported long distances, it spoils quickly, it has to remain inexpensive which means wages have to be kept low. Ever notice how expensive vanilla is? Vanilla is pollinated by hand. It seems that the only bee that knows how to pollinate the vanilla plant is the Melipona bee. I think it's only found in Mexico and it's endangered.

You go ahead and brag! That was absolutely riveting footage, from start to finish. You did an amazing job. I will say part of me was sorry to see that tree-hive chopped up and removed, because what a sculptural masterpiece it was, attached to the wood like that. The way you created those openings, i could imagine cutting away the entire length and using it as a decorative piece in a museum or a high-end home somewhere. Just amazingly beautiful. That said, i'm thrilled the bees are safe in what i'm sure is a wonderful new home. Congrats!

A Beautiful Example of a "Wild Bee Tree!" The Bees were "Remarkably Calm", while you cut their hive apart!

WHAT Do you use in your smoker? Long ago ... I read to use "Burlap"! That seem to only piss them off ! The last years I was able to keep a hive, I used Long Pine Needles, plentiful & free and never "angers" them!

Read the description and saw how important your job was to relocate this ancient colony. You did a great job making such precise cuts with your chainsaw, I was truly amazed! I love how engaging you are to everybody, taking time to educate them on honeybees. I bet the little girl will remember this memorable day, how she met a really cool bee man and go to taste honey out of a wild comb, for the rest of her life. In Japan where I’m from, they say that any animals you helped out go onto become your guardian spirits. I bet you have a huge swarm of protective spirits! Thank you for all the work you do to protect these amazing animals.

I like the way that you seem to work with the bees. I also appreciate what you do because my uncle did beekeeping, but he lives so far away that there was little exposure to it. My renewed interest is due to our bank manager. She’s a beekeeper and keeps my family supplied with honey.

@JPthebeeman your videos have made it possible for me to start beekeeping and not be afraid to do it. Just keep calm and move slowly and my recently caught swarm looks to be thriving and very sweet. No agression at all. I wear the jacket and gloves while I'm learning and hope to be able to only wear a veil when necessary very soon. Thank you for all your teaching, not only about what you are doing but your demeanor while dealing with the girls.

Considering the circumstances (like the chainsaw:D), these bees were quite calm not like my colonies. Nice video. I was a beekeeper from hungary.

Most honey bees are rather calm, specially when you start smoking them. Ironically he says the smoke calms them but in reality it puts them in a controls panic mode. They sense the smoke and instinct kicks in the huddle up and hide in the hide to stay safe and away from the fire.

SilvaDreams they think the forest is on fire so they go into feeding mode to escape with provisions for a new home.

As someone who is extremely phobic about any insect ressembling bee/wasp/hornet and the likes (I know that their behaviors are vastly different), it always boggles my mind how you and your peers manipulate bees essentially without protection. Good job on preserving this colony and ensuring our agricultural future.
