Do you compact the pavers once finished, or do you let it settle naturally?

Great job! Hey did you guys dig 6inches, use high performance gravel and then lay the pavers on top with the black polymeric sand to seal it? That's what it looked like to me but I thought I'd ask in case I missed something regarding materials.
@oddjobsdesignbuild1529

8-10 inches of base. 6A Stone is our base, then Limechip above as the bedding layer. This is an open graded base because we live in Michigan and have big changes in weather from Winter to summer.

Looks great! What is Unilocks recommendation for paver base? My neighbor had a new install of these and it was like they put dow four inches or more it seemed.
@oddjobsdesignbuild1529
@oddjobsdesignbuild1529 2 года назад
Thanks Matt. Unilock recommends “Avoid stone dust or limestone screenings, as these materials usually have too many fines (dust) that trap water that can cause early failure of the pavers.” We use 6A clean limestone without fines. In Michigan we have freeze and thaw cycles and moisture will cause pavers to shift with time. Then we use Ohio 9 for our bedding layers. We use 8-10” of base and 1” of bedding for a fully open-graded base
@s2syed
@s2syed Год назад
What does it mean to have a fully open graded base?
@oddjobsdesignbuild1529
@oddjobsdesignbuild1529 Год назад
@@s2syed What's up man! An open-graded base allows water to permeate through it with little resistance. The lack of fines in the open-graded aggregate does not allow it to hold on to the water. Instead, the water permeates through the base material. In Midwest, this is important because if moisture sits inside your base it will freeze and cause your pavers above to shift. The open-graded base also reduces the possibility of moss/weeds growing on the patio since there is minimal moisture meaning it's hard for anything to grow there without a water source.

I’m about to do a patio with the same pavers. I’m a little confused on the laying pattern. Did you just lay them “randomly” or are you using some predetermined pattern? I want to avoid cutting as much as possible.
@oddjobsdesignbuild1529
@oddjobsdesignbuild1529 2 года назад
Hey Nick! Unilock gives 2 or 3 patterns for Beacon Hill-pattern A, pattern B and maybe C? Most contractors like to avoid 4 corners of the pavers touching.
@jeffrhine78

Is the paver granite fusion or mist?
@oddjobsdesignbuild1529
@oddjobsdesignbuild1529 Год назад
Hey! Yes the paver is called granite fusion and it’s by Unilock. Are you using this for an upcoming project?

Practice on having less corners meet each other (having four corners touch), esthetically it looks better without. But otherwise great job guys!!!

@jeffrhine78

I see why they did that, no "cuts", I am designing my layout as well, if you go with the pattern A from unilock then you will have cuts which I would like to avoid, would be nice to just lay them down. with their pattern its possible with no cutting.

We use Ohio 9 versus 2NS, Sand or any other moisture absorbing contents as our paver base. We are located in Michigan, so any moisture inside of the base would be withheld, frozen in Winters and allow the pavers to shift overtime. We have a fully open graded base here so water can pass and our homeowners investments can endure the seasons and years. We use a clean 3/4 crushed limestone for our 8-10” base.
@sharky_spike

but theres way too many 4 corner joints
@oddjobsdesignbuild1529
@oddjobsdesignbuild1529 7 месяцев назад
The laying pattern provided by Unilock actually calls for 4-corners as a part of the pattern. We too believed in the 4-corner thesis until we saw this is what Unilock recommended
@Craycrayallday
@Craycrayallday 5 месяцев назад
@@oddjobsdesignbuild1529these style of pavers is fine do 4 corners because of the tabs that the sides of the pavers have which help them interlock, so with these pavers it’s forgivable. I still think it’s better to not have the 4 corners from a visual standpoint, so I never use the unilock patterns. My main thing is the long seams of 6 or more without any breaks.
@oddjobsdesignbuild1529
@oddjobsdesignbuild1529 5 месяцев назад
I agree man! It’s something we notice as contractors. Homeowners rarely notice anything of the nature unless they too were contractors at a certain point
@Craycrayallday
@Craycrayallday 5 месяцев назад
@@oddjobsdesignbuild1529 completely agree, as long as the jobs done well that’s all they’re looking for. If they’re happy that’s what matters. Glad you agree about the 4 corner joints. So many people argue on here that it’s fine to do, which it is, with certain pavers, just doesn’t look great. Anytime I get plans with layouts for patios with a random mosaic pattern from an architect, it’s specifies to not use 4 corner joints, and not have a seam running longer than 3-4 pavers. That’s the way I do it any time it’s possible.

Thanks for asking! At the time it was ~$12,000. The water runs off we have an 1/8th inch pitch for water to run off naturally. We also use a fully permeable base (all clean stone without fines) meaning water can permeate through the paver before it has any chance of puddling!
