That will look very nice once all lime mortar is applied and stone is on show once again. Some conservation people also are quite fussy with what colour of lime mortar is used, as that in itself can significantly change the appearance of a building. Peter ward the damp man would be very impressed with your route to repair this 👍 cheers. Marc.
Question; I'm doing a similar job DIY. What method would you suggest to clean the face of the stone without damaging it? I had considered sand blasting but figured it might be overkill. Tks in advance, your video gives me hope.
I just moved into a 150 year old stone house and I have to deal with 4 layers of wallpaper with a 2mm layer of Styrofoam in between that has also been painted over. Luckily the internal walls are shedding the wallpaper in many areas but it's definitely wet underneath. Outside has been pebble dashed too. I eventually want ot expose the stone outside and some of inside at least. How can I tell if it's lime or cement? What I've chipped away so far is very crumbly and smells like wet cement but I don't know what lime smells like.
Red vanman Pull down and new build keeps the construction industry going. We have to keep building things, it’s a whole lot of tax payers who earn good money.
Hi Tim. I'm a bit late to the party on this one; I was wondering what your thoughts are on whether your friends would need to building consent to just remove the render? Looking at the regs it throws the word renovation around a lot when referring to the external fabric and the requirement to improve the thermal properties of the house but not sure if just exposing stone is something that needs their sign off?
Hi Tim, I have the same problem with my house and damp is penetrating through to the interior walls. I chipped off some render for a test area and the wall is soaking wet and the bricks are in poor condition so it will need re-rendering with lime render. what was the name of the company that you did an interview with as I will need to buy the products from him and get a bit of advise for the best product to use TIA.
Are you even a tradesman? You know more than most tradesmen. haha. I'm so tired of seeing people pointing and rendering with cement on these old buildings. It's good to see people like you that do some research before taking a job on.
Could do with these guys myself. Just got a house, damp issues, plastic paint and cement render needs removing. Then no doubt huge amount of brick repair.
Typically the front of homes god upgraded with cut stone. The rest of the house got left. Best way to find the true age f a house is to go round the back. Go up in the roof and check the beams. The style of timbers will speak volumes.
Listed building - Building of Historical Importance. Serious penalties for carrying out alterations without consent. Would be interesting to put a Damp Meter over the wall to see where the worst damp penetration has occurred. The conservation officers like it if you kinda suck up to them a bit.....ask their opinion on everything and ask about how they would progress if it was them doing the alterations. Get onto a more friendly relationship it's way easier to work with than antagonising them.
Just because I am a sucker for saying no! Plus it could be 3 months to get permission to do the full wall so a couple of hours away from the house with good coffee is well worth it. 😀
Yes watched a few over the years. Most I agree with but it is much also easier to say what should be done to a building when you’re not paying. Sometimes I think there is a more sensible home owner approach by prioritising certain issues and not loosing sleep over others. I.e we have gypsum in some rooms, it’s not breathing like lime but it’s been fine for 60 years and I have no intention to rip it all out, whereas unvented cellar and floors had to be sorted much sooner. Hope that makes sense. He knows his stuff though. 👍
The Restoration Couple yeah totally makes sence. I suppose been a professional, he has to cover every angle and that can lead to sight over kill. This will make an interesting project this. I'll enjoy watching these.
There is so much more to this channel than a van build - but if you like van builds check out vandemonium . Also The Indie projects do some van conversion vids (although you might not like all of those as they also do travelling)
