Last month we cut down a 25 meter eucalyptus tree. I started out wearing Stihl chainsaw trousers. It was really hot and worse was humid. After around 10 minutes I had to take them off as I was overheating cutting out the notch in the tree. I’m sure these pants are great when it’s snowing but when it’s hot and humid they are tough wear if doing tree work.
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 3 года назад
Hey good day Karl. Thanks for the great insights. We'll see how they do come July here. Eucalyptus trees? I think I heard they are super difficult to split? True?
@kdegraa
@kdegraa 3 года назад
Compared to softwood trees they are much tougher. The wood is very dense and heavy. The trees we are cutting down are mainly a variety called blue gum or grey gum, two very closely related species. They grow quite quickly and given the chance will grow into huge that can be over 40 meters high. I've only split them with a wedge and a sledge hammer so yeah they are hard to split. However there are other trees around that are tougher. One is called an Ironbark tree. The name sort of tells you what these trees are like. Australia is a tough place but at least it does not snow in most places.

This is great information, Gord. I’ve thought about buying chainsaw pants for quite some time but I already have a pair of chaps and couldn’t seem to justify yet one more thing in my equipment/accessories stable. I really like the no belt rationale, although I suppose suspenders could be used on chaps as well, as I too have a bit of that “love” around the waist! Might be time to visit my friendly Stihl dealer... I need a couple of chains anyway so it could be a somewhat more expensive visit! When my better half asks why I have yet more sawing stuff, I’ll tell her that a Gord told me I needed it LOL! Cheers!

Great insights into an overlooked subject. Since I am well past my "best before" date, I cannot use a saw other than for occasional trail clearing or fallen tree removal, so chaps represent the easiest on-off option for users like me without having to wear PPE full time in the woods. I understand that belts can be restrictive, but one of the things that I learned working in the woods with my father, was to always wear a belt, just in case something did go bad, you always had something that you could use as a tourniquet. It’s one of the things that has stuck with me for around 50 years now. PPE has come a long way since those days, but cutting is still dangerous.

Thank you, Gordon! As always, a great topical presentation. Not being a "Safety Sally" here, but since this is about protection, you had many instances here where you're doing a lot of flipping of your chainsaw 180° and redirecting the bar when not really needing to get it out of the way. You'll be glad you're wearing PPE if you ever misjudge your flip and catch the nose of the bar on your leg....and then ask yourself, "Why did I do that?" It seems like unnecessary motion as well, cumulative over a long work day....fatiguing.
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 3 года назад
Morning and thanks Graham. Yes, better to flip it without turning it inward however being right handed, I find it awkward to exchange it through both hands to turn it outward as I turn it 180 degrees - but your point is well taken. Please note, the chain brake is always on, as safety requires when the saw is not being used to cut, first, and as also required, when you walk with the saw, the bar should always face backwards ( which is why I always turn it before or as walking away. Hope that helps but appreciate your great comments. I do have to try to remember to turn it outward instead of inward. :) All the best!

Pants appear to be a lot more comfortable than chaps. Gotta love the suspenders and elastic for being more gentle on lower back. Especially when you have long underwear on. Sometimes it feels like we have 100 rubber bands on our waist. I sometimes double up on long underwear which doesn’t help for comfort. Good insight here-didn’t understand that the protective clothing is specifically designed for the chainsaw speed. Makes sense though

Hi Gord - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I have been amazed how chaps are nearly exclusively worn on the North American continent and I cannot understand their popularity. You rarely see chaps being used in this part of the world. If you do it is likely by newcomer amateurs. Many years ago I started off with chaps but quickly found them uncomfortable and weighty, especially the straps around my legs and particularly the waist belt, which dragged down my trousers and caused sweating - and swearing! I switched to Oregon trousers with an oversize waistline and suspenders, which have proved to be very comfortable all the year round and are rated for my chainsaw speed. Trouser prices vary incredibly but mine cost more or less the same as the chaps. Another point I observe constantly is that it is not obvious to me that chainsaw boots are worn. It appears that ordinary work boots are the norm and I would welcome comment on this topic. Kindest regards.
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 3 года назад
Morning Big Rodders! Thanks for the informative background - very helpful. I wear green patch safety boots but have had much comment over time on the topic. Chainsaw boots can be pretty expensive here I found, but I would appreciate your thoughts on it, if you have time - do you think approved steel toe safety boots won't protect enough? Great to hear from you!
@rodneysweetnam8653
@rodneysweetnam8653 3 года назад
@@GPOutdoors - Big Rodders again. I'm just an enthusiastic amateur, no expert. When I was recruited a number of years ago by a Tree Service Co to split 150 cords a year I had to get my chainsaw licence even though I had used one for 30 years, register as self employed with the Revenue (your recent video on setting up as a firewood businees was very pertinent) and provide adequate PPE, which included chainsaw boots. I can buy ordinary steel toe capped work safety boots for $35 Canadian but my chainsaw boots cost $265. I assume that the experts proved that a chain travelling at 21m a sec (4100ft a min) would rip through the leather of an ordinary boot. Another advantage of the proper boots is that they provide incredible support for the ankles especially when working in the middle of a woodpile.

If there was a pair of chaps or pants that had integrated shin, knee guards, then I'd pay whatever. I'm currently sporting a big purple shin bruise from my last log-cutting session.

LOL! Good morning Brian. But sorry about the shin bruise - that had to be smarts for sure. Funny how certain parts of the body hurt worse than others when you bump them. I will do a followup for sure. I think my wife took my thong a long time ago so I think we're safe! LOL!

Great video Gord...and...might be a bit dramatic but you may have saved someone a whole lot of grief by discussing this topic. Not to offend anyone but if you are an employer that pays someone to use a chainsaw (arborist, landscaper, contractor, etc...) then I would respectfully suggest that you take a good look at what safety equipment that YOU provide to your employees. The time to discuss this is now and not when the Ministry of Labour is investigating an incident. That never ends well! Now to weekend warriors...we all know someone with a mystery scar on their legs that no one wants to talk about. Chain sawing is fun and a good healthy activity. But it's not just about the saw...there are other things you need to buy to protect yourself. It can he expensive to buy PPE yes, but what is the cost of not having it? Sorry Gord if I i took over your video but again this video really is important. And it looks like you had some fun making it. 😀 Cheers everyone, and 'safe sawing!'

Good day Dan and not at all. Happy to have your thoughts and comments as always. I also found out that in addition to the standards or certifications, that here in Canada, a couple of Provinces have their own additional requirements for chainsaw. sawyers, forestry etc. Quebec and BC. My understanding is that BC has the highest or most stringent requirement - the 4100 feet per minute that meets a specific BC standard (as I understand it). Always lots of good info to learn when you have a cup of coffee and an interest in finding out. It doesn't seem that long ago , that in order to find information, we had to head out to the local Library. :)) Thanks for all the good info Dan!

Growing up we never used all this safety gear, much less pants. Several years back a buddy gave me a pair and I thought never..anyway mid winter I found them not to bad to wear, ended up getting an extra pair for the wife as she took over one of the smaller Stihl saws 192TC and I make sure she puts on her PPE, well one weekend I was gone and she decided she wanted to cut up a stump I left due to something inside it and wrecked two chains..well anyway she put on the pants and broke out the 271 Farm Boss, needless to say it kicked out and hit her right below the knee, those pants saved her leg and maybe her life as she was home alone. She was worried to tell me, however I said I am so happy she had them on. BTW the pants are Stihl performance chaps.

hi gord i have the same saw and pants also went to pants over chaps just have to ask why so many pulls on the saw to get it to start mine only takes about 4 pulls when its ice cold and one when its warm thanks nice video
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 3 года назад
Morning Kevin. Thanks for mentioning that. A few other folks said their's starts quicker. I find that when it is cold it always takes 7-10 pulls however it idles so smooth ( and will idle forever without dying out, unlike my old 251) and runs so smooth that I am not sure I want to take it in to be looked at. I am afraid if they touch it then it won't idle and run as smooth afterwards. Maybe I'll just call them and ask them about it. Thanks again Kevin!

Hi GP, hope you'll see my question. I'm in the same position as you now, looking for a pair of chainsaw pants. What made you pick the function ergo rather than the dynamic vent model? The later is a bit more expensive and I'm not sure what more it has to offer...
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 3 года назад
Good day. I had the same challenge. The only difference I could see was that the Dynamic Vent said it was "ideal for summer use". But otherwise, they seemed the same. My chainsaw guy could not provide much other info on it so for the approx $100.00 difference, I chose the less expensive as they both had zippered vents, reinforced knees, front protection only and a chainsaw speed of 3,900. I will see in July just how hot these may get. I doubt they can get hotter than my black overalls. LOL.

Leather boots & steel toes are great protection in an industrial environment, but don't stand up to a chainsaw. They make big orange clunky chainsaw boots for a reason. Something else to research.

Hold on….if you have a C model saw how come you were pull starting it like that? The C models all have Stihl Easy Start which mean you shouldn’t be yanking that pull handle like that. Unless I missed something which is definitely possible haha
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors Год назад
Well good day good sir. Thanks for tuning in. I am not sure how to answer that, exactly, but here goes. It is a Pro level saw which means it does not have the Easy Start feature that my old MS 251 had ( landscape category saw). It is a "CM" model - not a "C", it has a decompression valve on it. I think I am starting it correctly. :)) It is a Version 3 model with M-Tronic and requires 7-10 pulls to start it - consistently - still to this day and according to my Dealer, that is normal for a Version 3 M-Tronic. Hope that helps a bit - thanks again - I appreciate you watching and commenting. Cheers and all the best out there!
@Na7ure
@Na7ure Год назад
@@GPOutdoors ohhhh I definitely did miss something lol. I understand! So on pro level CM saws the easy start is left out but the rest of the comfort features are left in as well as the M-Tronic?…I actually love that. I have a ms251c for my property here in Hawaii and it’s perfect for that but have been looking at something a bit larger for my east coast property. Is the 261cm a big jump up in power and quality from the 251? Or you think I should go bigger? Thank your for your explanation. You earned my sub no doubt
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors Год назад
@@Na7ure Good morning and not to worry - I am not sure why but the side of the saws only show a "C" but when you read the model and serial number sticker, that's were you can tell if it is a "C", or "CM". I loved my 251 but this 261 weighs the same as the 251 but noticeable increase in power. I believe it is still the best power to weight ratio saw on the market. Also with Pro level saws, the bar length is actually the length. An 18" bar on my 251 only offers about 16" of cutting length but an 18" bar on a pro saw is actually 18" of cutting length. Quality is excellent - I am very happy with the saw for sure. Big difference between my 251 and this 261. Best of luck and thanks for tuning in!
