This June 1974 film is of implosion testing of the Tektronix 4012 DVST (direct view storage tube) graphics terminal. We believe the specification was to survive the 5 lb impact, outlined before the first test, and it passed. The second test, oddly complex impact with the pin and the weighted impact, successfully showed that no shrapnel escaped the product, even though the tube imploded. The glass response in slow motion is remarkable. The next head-on impact appears to be much greater than the first, and the faceplate breaks. There weren't any large pieces that came forward and the force of the implosion properly drew debris inwards. The most important aspect of the testing was that no significant glass or ceramic shrapnel leaves the plane of the faceplate.

If only they've used Stockton Rush's patented implosion warning technology, these tubes could have been spared!

Why did the DVST have such a wide neck so far back? I suppose this is to do with the storage function, but curious how that works.

Pretty sure that was a shield for the yoke, not "tube"

I hope they used flawed (rejected) CRTs, but probably not. This film is like watching crash tests of new and desirable cars! Very disturbing.

You can see a severe screen burn on one of them, a circular pattern. The others may also be lifetime test articles.

They could have also been units previously used for burn-in testing. Once those tests are done, the tubes wouldn't be good for much else.

Interesting test. That was one thick piece of glass on the face of the CRT. I do remember a terminal like the one seen in the beginning. The high speed missile impact was interesting, as the implosion was clear, followed by the expulsion of small frags after the air had rushed in and before the pressure equalized. However, I had to get a player piano soundtrack used in a silent movie theater. Something with a western bar room and brawl theme. I thought the Flight of the Valkyries could work, too.

I once shot a tv with a shotgun. Real weird, everything went backward!
